Welcome to Brook Haven!
Welcome to Brook Haven Ranch! We are a 18+ premium role playing community set in Trader's Bend, Montana. Our concept is the culmination of twenty years of plotting and planning. We feature a rich, developed program in which many troubled characters thrive. Our community is one of the best on jcink and we look forward to you becoming a part of it!
Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

Brook Haven Referral

If your character is a Brook Haven student, we would love to see their referral information, as written by the person who has referred them. I know, I know. It's repetitive because this is already on the "basics" tab (did you remember to copy and paste the extra info?). Why are we asking you to do this? Because it gives us an idea of how an outside party sees your character's reasons for being at Brook Haven. Sometimes we'll tack this onto their student records (from the point of view of their group's adults), but we want to see you tell us what a referrer might see in your student.

Whoah boy. What to include in something like that? We suggest writing it like a letter. This letter should address the following.

  • The name and qualifications of the referrer:*
    • social worker
    • judge
    • religious leader
    • doctor
    • parent
  • The name of the student.
  • Current custody arrangements for the student.
  • Behavioral issues in the student.
  • Desired outcome for the student while at Brook Haven.
  • How the Referrer feels Brook Haven will benefit the student.
  • What the referrer feels the student will bring to Brook Haven.
The important thing that we want to see covered in this section is how an outside party sees the Brook Haven program helping the child being referred.

If you choose to write this section that way, that's all we need from you. There's no need to give us additional background information.

For non-Brook Haven Student characters, you're welcome to write this app in any style that you want. It's freeform, and we're happy to have it in first, second, or third person!

When you've finished reading this, you should delete the instructional text. Feel free to keep the header and just change it to something you like!

* Referrers in bold are the most likely candidates to refer a student. Referrers in italics are the most likely to have the application for their student denied by the Brooks (so if you want to go this route, make it good!).

Wait, What's This?

Here's the deal: All people are driven by three things: Their system of belief (their feelings about the world around them), their aspirations (the things that they want in the world), and their motivations (the things that drive them to do the things they do).

I like to think of role play more as acting than as writing. You know that old cliche on television and in movies, where the bad actress says "what's my motivation?" It's a real thing. Every person on earth has something that motivates them, and we want to know what motivates your character! This gives us tremendous insight into who your character is.

This section should be pretty straightforward. I've walked you through it! (You can delete this part once you've done this section!)

Systems of Belief

Beliefs about America

What does your character think about America of the present? This is relevant because most people hold some kind of political beliefs (unless they are very young). This includes adolescents! It's good to think about these things, and it forces you to think about how your character's beliefs might differ from your own.

Beliefs about Brook Haven

What does your character think about Brook Haven? Hillbrook? Anybody who lives on the ranch or in Trader's Bend knows a thing about Brook Haven and will have some thoughts about the ranch. Tell us about what those thoughts are! This will help you to put together how your character feels here.

Additional Header

You can put as many headers down as you want, and add as many Systems of Belief as you like. It helps to talk about what your character thinks about themself, or what they think about school. If your character is religious, you should definitely include something about their religious beliefs here, too!

Aspirations

Everybody has something that they want out of life. For example, I aspire to see what Brook Haven looks like five years from now! We want you to think about those things for your character and put them down into writing. Try to think deeply and go beyond the easy answers. I suggest thinking about things like what your character wants to get out of their experience at Brook Haven, how they feel about competition (do they aspire to win a major competition?), their career, and so on. The more you explain what they aspire to, the more definition you add to your character!

Aspiration Title One

Short loin sirloin ball tip ham hock flank swine t-bone beef pork picanha boudin cupim tongue chuck sausage. Shankle porchetta bacon pork chop leberkas doner tri-tip ball tip. Bresaola brisket filet mignon frankfurter capicola andouille turducken prosciutto. Pork chop pork meatball doner, burgdoggen meatloaf tongue.

Aspiration Title Two

Pork burgdoggen alcatra pancetta, pork chop fatback beef beef ribs cow ball tip tri-tip pork loin brisket. Jowl shankle ball tip sirloin chuck, pork ham hock rump beef strip steak. Ball tip t-bone shoulder turducken tongue ham hock filet mignon jowl cow tail ground round kielbasa alcatra pig.

Motives

The above two things drive our characters, but "motives" are what make them go from day to day. A character might be motivated to avoid punishment, or they might be motivated to eat cheese. We want to know what motivates your character to do the things they do. Everything you do is motivated by something. You eat because you are motivated by hunger. You turn on the radio because you are motivated by silence. You play a game because you are motivated to have fun. Most characters should have at least two major motives. We've given you room for three.

Motive One Title

Pork meatball swine fatback bresaola cupim sirloin boudin alcatra shank corned beef. Beef ribs ham hock salami pork loin kielbasa rump. Leberkas venison turducken frankfurter alcatra. Doner pork tail fatback ham pork belly.

What the Heck is a Key Plot!?

Whoah. I know, I know. most of you have never heard of a "key plot" before and it's pretty nerve wracking to do something altogether new. I get it.

Please delete this text once you've written your key plots.

Okay, so what is a Key Plot? A "key plot" is something which is currently happening in your character's life. It is about what is happening right now and where your character is going. It tells us what you want to get out of this character, and where you see them going.

Need an example? How about these:

  • Jo has arrived on the ranch with nothing but the clothes on her back and a bottle of day-old water she filled up at a grimy drinking fountain. She's been traveling for two weeks to get here, and the ranch turned out not to be what she expected it to be. Now she's fighting the urge to run back to the life that she left behind.
  • Adam's mother abandoned him without a trace, but two weeks ago he received a letter in the mail in her handwriting. It doesn't have a date on it, and he couldn't tell when it was sent. Now he's trying to figure out the mystery of these letters, and whether or not it's something he should bring to the attention of his staff.
  • Alex has jumped from foster home to foster home, and they've learned how to push their foster parents until they break and give up on him. Now they're on the ranch and continues to push their counselors and leaders as hard as they can to see where their breaking point is. Now they're embroiled in a battle they can't win. The ranch is slowly teaching them to adapt and thrive. The question is whether they can take the tools and learn.
All of these are what we would identify as Key Plots. There's another section for "desired plots" so if you are ever in doubt about whether one of your plots is a "Key" or "Desired" simply PM a member of staff. We're more than happy to help you figure out the difference!

PLEASE NOTE!: All Brook Haven students should include at least one key plot that addresses their story arc on the ranch. This means that we want to not only know why they are on the ranch but what you hope they will accomplish while on the ranch. Try to write this from the Mun* perspective instead of from the character's perspective. It will help us to get to know your character!

* Mundane, or the player.

Read This First!

I know you know how to write a shipper. You've probably done it a time or two. Even if you've done it for Brook Haven, though, I think you ought to take a look at our Shipper Guide. It will tell you what you need to know to write a shipper that surpasses our standard and which is guaranteed to make the staff want to spam it!

Go ahead and give that a read, then you can delete this text and the header!

Uh.... "Perceptions?

Perceptions are sort of like an extended shipper that gets you out of your character's head. They are the opportunity for you to look at your character from an outside perspective and to tell the reader how someone in their position might view your character. Since I got this tool from here, I'll refer you to the original source for more information about what each of these categories means. (It would be plagiarism to copy the text, so please click!)

Make sure to write these from the perspective of someone who is observing your character, rather than as your character! If, like me, you have multiple headpeople, you can look at your character from their perspective and put down your notes here!

You should delete this text (and the header) once you've completed this section. I'd save it until then for reference!

What's the Difference?

We get asked this question a lot: What's the difference between a habit and a quirk?

We understand that this can be a tough distinction for some people. We're not going to pend or reject your application on whether you get these right or wrong, so please, first of all, relax.. This is actually one of the funnest sections of the application! How about we get into those differences, shall we?

Habits are things that your character does repeatedly. They can be anything from "always makes the bed" to "reads for one hour in the afternoon" to "always has a cigarette first thing in the morning" and so on. Habits are repeated behaviors, good, bad, or neutral.

Quirks are things about your character that make them unique. They can also be involuntary tics. Examples of quirks include "gap in the teeth" or "always wears red" or "superstitious." They are interesting facts about your character that other characters may observe.

Once you've completed this section, you may remove the instructions (and header).

Pro Tips...

Before you do this section, let me pass on to you a tip that I don't always use, but which makes things a lot easier for me to connect my characters to others: For each of the first two categories, choose one physical, one mental, and one economical (think "home economics") choice. If you can't come up with an economical choice, I recommend coming up with something that is at least active rather than passive. Something your character does rather than something they wait to have done to them. Other players will find it easier to connect with physical or economical hobbies and skills than with mental hobbies and skills.

I also recommend considering anti-skills. What is your character terrible at? Mark this down if it's significant (if it's something they do often or are required to do). Maybe their math skills are remedial, or they are the world's worst cook. These are often more interesting than listing the things your character is great at!

"Interests" are things that your character wants to learn more about.

Feel free to add more to these sections, but don't let them bog you down. If you get stuck with too many skills or interests (the two sections most likely to spark a lot of creativity), consider whether or not you're listing everything that they've ever done or that has drawn their attention for more than a few minutes, and then pare back to what's most important to your character.

When you're done, delete the instructional text and the header, please!

More Plots? What are These?

Okay, so you've written your "Key Plots" and now there's another section of the application looking for more plots. This is one of the most frequent questions that we get from new members, and I want to help you out with this!

Desired Plots differ from Key Plots in that they are something you would like to happen to your character. The best way to put this is that they are thread suggestions. Think of them as future threads you'd like to do, but which you don't want to make as open threads. This way, other players can pick up one of your desired plots with a minimum of effort!

Keep in mind that Desired Plots aren't about desired relationships. Those ought to go onto your shipper. Keep this section to ideas for your character. Maybe you'd like for them to wind up in a fight with another student and having a buddy walk. Or maybe you want them to fall into the lake and get rescued (or to rescue somebody who has fallen into the lake!). These are examples of desired plots.
