Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

Yoona was born in Jonchon, North Korea, and she believes it to be the worst place in the world to live. For the first eleven years of her life, she lived under extreme oppression. The North Korean Government, run by Kim Jong-Il at the time of her birth and later Kim Jong-Un, controlled everything. The radio at home could not be turned off. There was only one channel on television. The children performed for tourists to show how happy they were, and the Kims reported that North Korea was the happiest country on earth, after China. She learned early that she was never to speak up, and always to guard her thoughts lest the supreme ruler know she disliked the country of her birth. Her parents, oppressed as they were, weren't affectionate with Yoona, and she never knew what love meant until she made it out of China. Because of this she can be a bit clingy, and she enjoys physical and verbal affection. Her primary love language is acts of service, however, and she goes out of her way to do things for other people. She's artistic, patient, energetic, enthusiastic, and very damaged. Like so many North Koreans, Yoona still relates to her oppressors and believes them to have the best interests of all North Koreans in mind. Yoona's father, Yeseul, escaped with Yoona into China when she was eleven years old. Her mother had been killed for participating in Western culture, and her father ran away with her during the night. They crossed over the Chinese border with help from the underground railroad. A conductor later betrayed them, selling Yoona to a Chinese man for the sum of $500. He had purchased her as a sex slave, and made use of her body every night while she cried. When he became tired of her (as she was no longer a virgin), he sold her again for the grand total of $250 to another man, who would rent her out night after night as a prostitute to white tourists who wanted to experience the joys of a young girl without fear of repercussion. When all is said and done, she is only glad not to have been repatriated, Stockholm Syndrome or not. She was rescued by an undercover conductor, a white man posting as a customer, and taken over the border into Russia, where she arrived at the American Consulate and was later taken to America. A (South) Korean-American social worker worked with her to get a referral to Brook Haven Ranch, where she is now part of the Ridgerunner Group.

Moon Yoona
TW: List Triggers Here, Separated by Commas
Alias: Devin Name: Moon Yoona (Yoona Moon) Link to Shipper: Just a Girl and Her Will to Survive How do you feel about a single parent? A single parent is not a preferable situation for Yoona. She will do better with two parents of opposite genders, as this is traditional and therefore more comfortable for her in the general sense. If the right single parent comes along, or the right homosexual couple comes along, then this is something that we will need to discuss privately to ascertain if it is right for Yoona. What about a poly family? As long as there is one parent of either binary gender, I believe that Yoona would do almost as well with a poly family as with a traditional two-parent family. Do you have a preference for a particular gender or genders? Yoona will do best with a family that has one father and one mother. Which one(s)? n/a How does your character feel about transracial adoption? Given that Yoona is Korean and the options are therefore limited, she will be fine in a family that is white, black, native american, Latin, Hispanic, and so on. It should be noted that it might take a while for her to warm up to a white family or a Chinese family, but otherwise she's open for transracial adoption. Does your character have any special needs? By the time that she is ready to be adopted, the answer is "probably not." Does your character deal with any mental health issues? yes What issues are those? At the time of writing, Yoona is dealing with Stockholm Syndrome and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The PTSD is unlikely to be resolved by the time that she is adopted. How does your character feel about adoption in general? It's an unknown factor for her. It's not something that she ever thought would happen to her and she's anxious about what it means. Her biological parents were distant and while they loved her, they weren't the type of parents who gave her a lot of what she needed most from them. How would you describe your character? Yoona is a sweet, outgoing girl who has been through a lot of hardship in her life but who earnestly believes that things are going to get better from here. Even so, she is often fearful of white males (as these are the ones who typically hurt her) and sometimes of older Chinese males. She's overcoming a lot of obstacles and while her past is tragic, she is determined to make the future a better place for her to live in. How would you describe your character's ideal foster/adoptive parent(s)? They will need to be affectionate, strong with discipline, but also appropriate in its administration. They should be willing to provide a lot of family activities and make sure that she feels that she is loved, as her first parents did not provide this for her in her life. They ought to be kind, considerate of her past, and patient with her bad days, because while they will come, they will also go.
