Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

His mother was seriously injured, and he went to live with his father, step-mother, and step-sister for several years. After using a horse riding accident to reveal their abuse, he's returned to live with his mother again.

Tyler’s parents didn’t exactly want a kid. But they were fighting a lot, and having a kid seemed like it would bring them closer together.

Instead, having an infant set into the events that finally ended their marriage: Tyler’s mother met a single father with a baby six months older than Tyler, and what began as play dates turned into an affair. When Tyler was two, his father found out about the affair and walked out. Soon after, the other boy - Darren - and his father moved in.

Living together turned out to be harder than having an affair, and the household was never a happy one. Many of Tyler’s early memories are of hiding with Darren while his parents yelled at each other, or staring fixedly at a wall while his step-father yelled at him.

Tyler and Darren were always close. Tyler was a timid kid, and by the time they went to school, he stood out as unmistakably “weird”: he made the wrong facial expressions, or said things in the wrong tone, and he’d started making grunting noises and strange jerking motions with his arms. Darren was a more popular - and bigger - kid, and made sure Tyler was included. In return, Tyler was endlessly loyal to his step-brother; he quickly found a role as “the clever one”: the one who could turn Darren’s ideas into things that could actually be done.

When Tyler was nearly eight, the four of them were in a car accident. Tyler and his mother survived. Darren and his father didn’t. Without anywhere else to go, Tyler was sent to live with his father.

In the meantime, his father had remarried a woman, Deirdre, with a daughter of her own, Lydia. Initially, Deirdre was very cold towards Tyler; Deirdre was endlessly concerned with creating the appearance of having a perfect family, and having her step-son present interfered with that.

After a few months, she changed her mind: having a son as well as a daughter worked well with her image of a perfect family, and especially for a kid his age, Tyler was good at being quiet and polite in public. So Deirdre insisted that Tyler act like she was his mother, and she and Tyler's father fought to prevent sharing custody. They were unable to prevent legally shared custody, but they dragged their heels enough that Tyler's mother - with both limited money and residual disability from the accident - wasn't able to actually see him more than once a year.

Deirdre treated Tyler like her own child, but she didn't treat either of the kids well. Her obsession was with the appearance of a perfect family; in private she was rarely warm, but often demanding, and failures to live up to her exactly standards were punished, often brutally, with her husband's belt.

Both at home and at school, Tyler become an expert at fitting in - figuring out what people wanted of him, putting up with whatever they demanded, and getting accepted, even if marginally.

Deirdre expected both the kids to learn to ride, but it was Lydia who convinced Tyler that it was worthwhile to be good at it. Tyler was decent with horses from the beginning, but it took several years for him to get to the point of being competitive. In the middle of eighth grade, when the family had traveled some distance for a equestrian meet, the night before he intentionally provoked Deirdre by talking back to her, more directly than he ever had before. As he expected, she belted him hard enough to leave deep red cuts all over his back. The next day, preparing with his horse before the event, convinced his horse to throw him. Lydia was keeping their parents out of the way, so they weren't around to interfere when the doctor inspected him and found the marks. With a little prompting, the doctor reported the situation to the state; Lydia was removed from the family and Tyler was sent back to his mother.

Who am I?

Most of Tyler's identity has been built around other people's expectations of him. Now he suddenly has more freedom than he's ever had before, and he's not actually sure what to do with it. Does he actually even like any of the things he thinks he likes?

You can't go home again

Tyler's mother insists that she's wanted him back all this time, and his father just stopped her. That's not the story Tyler was told, and he's not sure he believes her. Even if it's true, he's not sure how he feels about her, or how to have a relationship with her after years.

The twist is inside

Tyler thinks of himself as having lots of self-control; he's methodical, thoughtful, and loves elaborate plotting. What he doesn't understand is the way his emotions distort his planning. In fact, he's prone to being impetuous and at times self-destructive, often while telling himself a story about how clever and careful he's being. He's going to need to either get control of that behavior or it's going to get him in real trouble, sooner rather than later.

About Tyler

Tyler hates open conflict, and wants very much to be included and liked by other people. At his best, he can be helpful, pleasant, and uncannily charming. But he can also be fickle and manipulative: he can perfectly sweet to you one moment, then ditch you the next moment because he thinks it will ingratiate him with someone he cares more about who just walked into the room. It’s not quite fair to say he’s insincere, though it can come across that way. If you meet him on his own, he’ll really, truly want you to like him, and he’ll be willing to go to great lengths to make it happen; it’s just that if there are two people around, he has to decide whose opinion he cares about more…

Most people probably haven’t put the name to it, but it’s pretty obvious that Tyler has Tourette’s. The main effect most people see are that he makes jerking motions with his arms.

Since he got back to Trader's Bend, Tyler's thrown himself into involvement with church and with Hillbrook, and those occupy most of his free time. People who've been in Trader's Bend for a while knew him when he was little, and might know his mother - who's been struggling with the after effects of her car accident and her difficulty getting Tyler back for years.

Platonic

Tyler has difficulty making close friends, but he's quite friendly. Right now he's latched onto two bits of identity - involvement in the church and participation in Hillbrook - and he's focused on making friends around those, but Tyler is just about always trying to be get along with the people around, so it's possible to connect with him just because you happen to be in the same place as him. He's agreeable to a fault, so it's not hard to rope him into helping mow your lawn - or egg your neighbor's house - even though you just met him five minutes ago.

Tyler's not a loyal friend - faced with multiple people, he usually chooses to just side with one, often in ways that seem inconsistent or incoherent to everyone else. But for some people, he can make up for that by being industrious: when he is being your friend, he's there, intensely and as effectively as he can.

Eventually, Tyler could use a friend who sees through him. There’s probably a real person, under all the pretending, but even Tyler doesn’t know who it is. Some day, he should have a friend who helps him find it: someone who's not going to take advantage of him, and who'll convince him it's safe to have his own opinions and desires.

Romantic

Tyler hasn't come out yet, though he's beginning to suspect that he might be gay. He's not sure how he feels about that - being gay seems, well, messy and complicated in a way he doesn't want. While he's deciding what to do about that, he’d make a great boyfriend for a girl who wants a romance without being pressured for sex. He’d be into putting on a big show of being in a relationship, both for the friendship and for the social status of dating.

Antagonistic

Tyler tries too hard to fit in, and it's not hard for people to decide they don't like him. He might have seemed friendly only to sell you out to someone ten seconds later. He might have tried so hard to get along that he just seemed uncomfortable and weird. Tyler doesn't like direct conflict, and he works hard to avoid it. But if he actually feels threatened by someone, he will plot against them, even setting rather elaborate plans into motion to try to defuse the perceived threat.

Familiar

There are only two relevant relatives in Tyler's life right now: his mother and his step-sister. Both relationships have been thrown completely in the air by recent events, and he's still sorting out with them how they feel about each other.

Other

In school, Tyler keeps a low profile. He's agreeable, polite to teachers, and in general tries very hard not to be noticed much. He's fairly bright, and deliberately underperforms to avoid standing out.

QUOTE
Your character is playing a game with a friend and your character knows their friend is cheating. What do they do?

At first, Tyler had thought Sam was just having a run of good luck. But after a few rounds, he'd gotten suspicious. It wasn't just the luck, it was the way Sam was moving, a little furtive, a little jumpy every time Tyler looked away.

It wasn't hard to catch him. Tyler just looked down the next time Sam rolled, glancing over but not moving his head; sure enough, out of the corner of his eye, he could see Sam nudge one of the dice with his finger while he thought Tyler was focused on the board. He couldn't make out exactly what had happened, but it didn't really matter. Tyler looked up. "Nice roll."

Sam just smiled and moved his pieces, taking advantage of the favorable roll. Tyler was watching his friend closely; mostly, he wanted to know why Sam was cheating. Does he just want to win that badly? It was disappointing - Tyler had been enjoying the game, but if they weren't just competing fairly, it was a totally different, and much less fun, activity. He didn't even consider calling Sam out; if he wanted to win that much, so be it. No, the question was whether to try hard to win despite the cheating, or to let his friend win.

Tyler took the dice and rolled. In fact, he got lucky, luckier than Sam had gotten that last roll with his little nudge. Fine, he can win. What difference does it make? Tyler considered the board for a few seconds. There was a clever, but risky move available on that roll, and Tyler ignored it, taking an obvious, safe bonus. There was no way he'd beat Sam playing like that, not if Sam was cheating, but no way to catch that he'd passed up on a better move, either.

"Your move," Tyler told him. He smiled, warmly, at his friend.

Habits

Liar

Tyler would always rather tell a convenient lie than admit to an inconvenient truth.

Poise

Tyler always wants to look very neat. When he can, he replaces clothes quickly if they stop fitting right or get damaged, and he spends too much time every morning getting his hair to look right. Riding often messes this up, and he'll sneak off to a bathroom to neaten up at the first opportunity.

No downtime

Tyler is never not doing something. If he's alone, he has a television on or he's doing homework (or both). Otherwise he's out with people or participating in some sort of structured activity.

Quirks

Tourette's

Tyler has Tourette's. The main manifestations are a repeated grunt that he often makes, especially when stressed, and a common motion where he jerks his left elbow in and out several times in a row. He has enough control to stop them if he concentrates on it, though it's not pleasant and when he stops concentrating he needs to do them repeatedly and more than usual for a bit.

(Because I get really self-conscious about this on Tyler's behalf: when it comes to Tyler's Tourette's, because it's something that's going on regularly in the background, I try to narrate it the same way I'd narrate other routine physical actions, making occasional mention of it along with things like facial expressions, background movements, and so on. As a result, one of his tics comes up an average of about once a post. I'm not trying to make it a major topic of the thread, and there's no need to comment or respond to it, any more than you would respond to any other random physical action Tyler has made. Of course, it's also always okay to respond to it when appropriate.)

Pause and talk

Tyler usually pauses, sometimes by as much as a couple seconds, before he starts talking. Usually it's just a missed beat, hard to notice unless you're watching for it, but the longer gaps can seem awkward. On the other hand, once he starts speaking, he speaks quickly and with few pauses or filler words.

Resting Face

Tyler's facial expressions are always very deliberate. Left alone, he slips back into a blank look that can seem bored, annoyed, or distracted to some people.

Hobbies

Board Games

Tyler learned to play german-style board games from his step-sister, and has gotten good at them (though not as good as her). Because it was often just the two of them, he's gotten used to playing multiple players at once.

Equestrian competitions

This has certainly been Tyler's most time consuming hobby for years. He's intense and focused when practicing (and his tics usually disappear while he's doing it). His strongest event by far is barrel racing. Now that he doesn't have to do it, he's not sure if he wants to continue.

Skills

Sign Language

Tyler is fluent in ASL (again, because of Lydia). Because she's the only person he's ever communicated with in sign-language, he has a heavy "accent" - makes signs close to his chest and speeds through parts of them in a way that's hard for other people to understand. His speech patterns do carry over to ASL - he has long pauses before he starts signing, then signs rapdily without pauses.

Riding

Tyler's a good rider, especially at his main event (endurance) - he's not a star, he's not going to win a statewide competition, but he's good enough that there were some people in Hillbrook who recognized his name before he showed up.

Interests

Television

Tyler's obsessed with television. Not just watching it, though he does like to watch it, but the whole concept. He's intrigued by the structure of television - the way tropes get repeated from show to show, the ways individual actors, writers, and directors bring the same ideas to different shows - and closely follows industry news.

Desired Plots

Something Stupid

Tyler's has a self-destructive streak that he's not sure what to do with, and he'd like someone to explore it with. It might be someone doing their own acting out who'd like a friend to do it with, or it might be someone encouraging Tyler to do stupid things for their entertainment.

Done with Racing

This one's a little vague. Tyler's genuinely not sure if he cares about equestrianism. I'd like him to have some interactions with people who feel strongly about it, both ways - people who are really enthusiastic and either glad Tyler's with Hillbrook or into competing against - and also people (maybe some BHR students) who have been dragged into it but really don't care at all, so he might be able to figure out how he feels.

Ties that Don't-Quite-Bind

Tyler is putting on a big show of everything being okay. But it's not - his relationship with his mother is a mess, and he's just barely going through the motions of holding himself together. Tyler's pretty good at faking this, but someone should notice that he's faking it, and try to encourage him to actually deal with things rather than trying to push all his feelings off.

As a warning, Tyler is going to lie to any adult who tries to do this. A lot.

Helpful

Someone could easily take advantage of Tyler's desire to be agreeable - to get him to do work, to help cheat at homework, or just about anything else. This could go on for a while. Eventually Tyler's likely to turn on someone who pushes him too far, which could be interesting in its own right.

Preferred Word Count: 300
Likely Triggers: Tyler's Tourette's being treated as wrong by authorities. (It's absolutely fine if individual people are unkind to Tyler, including because of his Tourette's. The line here is if, say, Tyler got in trouble at school because of something he can't really control.)

It's pretty obvious that these two would know one another, even if they do ride in different divisions at Hillbrook. I'm also guessing that Tyler would go to her father's church, especially considering that he might be too disruptive for a traditional type of church. So they'll be familiar with one another via those means. Obviously Sym isn't going to wind up being the type of antagonist that Tyler often seems to require, but she could be a friend to him. Since she's fairly influential, however, and given that she tends to be able to influence the way that people behave, this does seem like it's probably what you're looking for with Tyler. Especially if you consider that she's about to have some real run-ins with her ex boyfriend (father of her baby), it seems logical that this would work well with Tyler's story and give him something that could put him right on edge. Does this sound viable?

Back in January, Lauren's father married Nicole Brook, which was a big step for everyone, including Lauren. She, her sisters, and her dad had all lost her mother years before, but for Lauren, she'd give anything to be able to talk to her. Having Nic around is nice, but sometimes it's also painful, and Lauren's struggled to figure out how it is that she fits.

Essentially a Brook grandchild, she spends quite a bit of time on BHR, volunteering, especially since the (ridiculous) expulsion that's left her parents in the position to deem that homeschooling might be best.

Lauren's a sweet girl, but don't let that fool you, she's got enough sass to keep anyone on their toes. Including some of the Brooks. She's going to be present on Brook Haven, not only helping with ranch chores, but helping with the horse Tony gave her.

But what will happen when her biological father shows up, wanting to put a claim on her that he gave up years ago, contesting rights that the man she's only ever even known as a father isn't *right* for her, now that her biological mother is deceased?

I love the idea of these two being friends! Oh my gosh, Ben! Eeek!

Before Lauren's mom died, she had her taking lessons over at Hillbrook. She hasn't been back since ... her mom's accident, and she never had her own horse or anything, she does now. She spends most of her time split between Brook Haven and Full Circle (family ranch), but she goes to church on Sunday. I'm not sure if Tyler would go to the church that her family does (more traditional church) or not, but if he did that might be a place for them to run into one another.

Despite what's going on with her and Kade, Lauren has a good and a really big heart for people. She's having a hard time, and I think she'll see through some of the front that he's trying to put up so that she can really be his friend.

I'd love to have them run into one another. Any ideas?

I was talking with Devin and we're pretty sure that the youth group for the community would actually involve all three of the churches youth, and it probably takes place at the Fruit of the Vine. Lauren would be going because her parents would want her to go. Recently, her Dad bought her a journaling bible, which is a pretty big deal for her. It came at a good time, since she's been struggling in her faith. Obviously, you know about the event that's coming out on the 26th; the field day, which could definitely be an opportunity to play these two together, but I'd also be 100% open to doing something with them at the youth group as well! I'd love to get into a thread where she's being less of a pain, since everything I have her in so far is Lauren showing her not so nice side.

I'd love it if Tyler came to Levi about his concerns and confusion when it comes to religion. Levi would love to be a sounding board for him, and someone who can offer his some sort of perspective on what it is that he's struggling with. As far as the unintentional ignorant slips, I think it could be interesting. Levi probably won't get angry, he'll probably just quietly correct him and let it go at that, but it could definitely make for an interesting thread or series of. <3
