Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

Yoona was born in Jonchon, North Korea, and she believes it to be the worst place in the world to live. For the first eleven years of her life, she lived under extreme oppression. The North Korean Government, run by Kim Jong-Il at the time of her birth and later Kim Jong-Un, controlled everything. The radio at home could not be turned off. There was only one channel on television. The children performed for tourists to show how happy they were, and the Kims reported that North Korea was the happiest country on earth, after China. She learned early that she was never to speak up, and always to guard her thoughts lest the supreme ruler know she disliked the country of her birth. Her parents, oppressed as they were, weren't affectionate with Yoona, and she never knew what love meant until she made it out of China. Because of this she can be a bit clingy, and she enjoys physical and verbal affection. Her primary love language is acts of service, however, and she goes out of her way to do things for other people. She's artistic, patient, energetic, enthusiastic, and very damaged. Like so many North Koreans, Yoona still relates to her oppressors and believes them to have the best interests of all North Koreans in mind. Yoona's father, Yeseul, escaped with Yoona into China when she was eleven years old. Her mother had been killed for participating in Western culture, and her father ran away with her during the night. They crossed over the Chinese border with help from the underground railroad. A conductor later betrayed them, selling Yoona to a Chinese man for the sum of $500. He had purchased her as a sex slave, and made use of her body every night while she cried. When he became tired of her (as she was no longer a virgin), he sold her again for the grand total of $250 to another man, who would rent her out night after night as a prostitute to white tourists who wanted to experience the joys of a young girl without fear of repercussion. When all is said and done, she is only glad not to have been repatriated, Stockholm Syndrome or not. She was rescued by an undercover conductor, a white man posting as a customer, and taken over the border into Russia, where she arrived at the American Consulate and was later taken to America. A (South) Korean-American social worker worked with her to get a referral to Brook Haven Ranch, where she is now part of the Ridgerunner Group.

The Worst Place on Earth

Yoona was born right on time in Jonchon, North Korea (in the Hwanghae Province). Her parents kept her well, but quiet. From birth she was expected to keep quiet and to obey the rules, and by the time that she was two years old, she had learned the importance of following the precise letter of the rules. Things were to be done in a certain order. She was to obey her parents and her teachers. She must sing for the tourists and always speak well of her country and the Kim family if she was asked. She knew these things since before she could walk, since before she could talk, and Yoona fell straight in line behind her parents, good North Korean citizens who did their best to uphold the law. The law was complex, rigid, and lengthy. She couldn't speak, even in a whisper, about the things that frightened her the most, and so Yoona learned to keep those things locked away inside of her. She was not to ask questions, only to obey, and to always be careful about the things that she thought because Kim Jong-Il could hear what she thought. Her parents taught her that the Kims were gods and that there was no other religion aside from them. She was not only to worship them, but to fear them. And so she did. It was hard to tell if her parents loved her or not, but Yoona had nothing to compare their affection to. Her friends' parents were similar, rigid, but not harsh, with high expectation of obedience and conformity, but little expectation of achievement. Their duty was to serve the government and to leave visitors with the best possible impression of North Korea when they went home to their families. The world had to see her country in the best possible light, which meant that she had to lie. Lying was easy enough when the tourists didn't speak Korean and she didn't speak English. Besides, she didn't have to pretend to be happy. Yoona played with her friends on the school yard, learned how to kick a football around, and she learned how to play a Komungo by the time that she was six years old. If it wasn't a good life, then she had nothing to compare it to. North Korea allowed her to watch one channel on television, and that channel was controlled by the Kims. Yoona often didn't have enough to eat, but her parents hushed her if ever she raised her voice to complain, and reminded her to be grateful for what her family had. There were others who had less than she did, though her parents told her little about them, and she wouldn't know about the prison camps until she was older, and had moved out of China. For everything that her parents didn't do for her, they tried to shield her from the truth of her home country, to protect her. As though things might one day change. When she was nine, Yoona learned the true horrors of the regime. Her teacher failed to arrive for school on a regular school day, and was replaced by another teacher, much stricter than the first. The new teacher explained, only after pressed, that their former teacher had been executed for crimes against the republic. She had been found hoarding media copy of unauthorized materials in her home, and the punishment had been swift. After that, Yoona understood real fear. Fear before that had been a missed meal, something happening to her parents. But at nine years old, she started to realize how easy it was to run afoul of the North Korean legal system. She was nine when she decided that she wanted out. Nobody had told her, of course, that in some countries of the world there was enough food to go around. Maybe it wasn't true, but she had begun to imagine it. Her parents told her to quickly shut down her thoughts as soon as she had them, lest Kim Jong-Il read her mind and know what she was hiding. Life went on, as far as life could go on, in North Korea. Yoona learned her music, she sang and she danced, and she put on the shows for the tourists who were always to believe that in North Korea, they had enough. She was unhappy, however, and she never felt love from her parents. She hardly knew what it felt like to love another person until, when she was ten years old, her mother was executed. It came unexpectedly, based on false allegations that threw her father into a state of distress. They had, or so the leaders said, been planning to defect to South Korea. The South Korean border was heavily guarded, and the only option was to escape to China. Yoona had no idea of her father's plans until he woke her up in the night and they began to make their passage from their home in Jonchon north toward the Chinese border. It would take them three days to make it the full distance, traveling at night and producing papers whenever they were questioned. Her father strove to make it appear casual, told her they were going on an adventure, but Yoona knew better. They would wait four days on the border before they finally crossed it in the dead of night, to be met by the underground railroad that would smuggle them out of China. Yoona never made it that far. She would never find out what happened to her father. At eleven years old, she was sold by one of the conductors to another man for five hundred American dollars. For three months he kept her confined, raping her daily and slapping her when she expressed fear or distaste for what he did to her. When he was finished with her, he sold her again, for the meager price of $250. Her new owner rented her out to tourists who wanted a young girl to fuck, and she grew exhausted, aged, and increasingly fearful. Still, this life was better than the one that she had left behind. She was still hungry, and she was kept as a slave, but here there was hope. When Yoona was thirteen -- two years after being sold into slavery -- a conductor posed as a client and smuggled her away from her master. Though she feared him and refused to eat any of the food that he fed her, he smuggled her into Russia, where he would contact the American consulate and see refuge for the trembling girl in America. Her request was granted, and she spent four months in an exchange program before being referred to Brook Haven Ranch for emotional healing while the Ranch attempted to locate and contact her biological father.

Food, Glorious Food!

Starvation is a common fate in North Korea, between the prison camps and the failure to distribute resources to the people. As a result, Yoona (whose family was middle class) never had quite enough to eat. She's accustomed to being hungry and to depending on rice and bean based foods. The sheer amount of food available at Brook Haven is going to astonish her, and she's going to gain some of the weight she needs to gain quickly.

There are side effects to this, however. The first is that the food is unfamiliar to her and it's going to take some getting used to. Rich foods will upset her stomach at first and she's going to have to eat around the foods that she either doesn't like or which make her sick. At first, she's going to want to eat everything, so sickness is likely as a result of overeating.

The second side effect is that Yoona will hoard food in her cabin, and this will attract bugs to the cabin. In spite of the presence of food on the ranch, she will be utterly unsure where she's going to get her next meal, and it could take months to convince her that she's not going to have to worry about food ever again. This is an unfortunate side effect of early starvation.

Check Yes or No

Yoona's social skills are better than one might think given her circumstances of slavery, but she is also socially stunted, meaning that she still socializes much as she would if she were ten or eleven years old. She has a lot of catching up to do and she wants to make friends with everybody. She's particularly extroverted and adores people from all walks of life, but among other things, her English skills still need significant improving, and she's spent a lifetime being taught that nations like the United States and South Korea are evil places where people want to hurt her.

Friendships, therefore, are going to be difficult for her to make (see the shipper portion of this application for more information). She's desperate to connect to people, and she wants to tell her story and to become somebody who can help other girls like her to make it out of China alive, but she doesn't know how to relate to other people, so this is going to be an awkward phase for her.

I won't go into all of the shipping-related details right here, but the point is that she is likely to appear to be acting out rather than attempting to make friends. Friendships right now are critical for her and she is likely to be timid around adult males (particularly if they are white, as most of her customers were white) while also wanting to surround herself with people who make her comfortable -- mostly girls her own age.

The Will to Survive

Yoona didn't know what she was surviving until she got out. In North Korea, that's just the way that things are. Wake up, worship Kim Jong-Il (or his successor, Kim Jong-Un). Guard your thoughts. Obey the rules (of which there are many). Listen to the radio that you can't turn off. Respect your elders. Fear the government. She had no idea that it took courage for her to make it into China, or that it took courage for her to make it out of China into Russia. She had no idea that it took courage not to die when the men came at her.

She didn't discover how much courage she had until she set foot on American soil and all of the years of fear and worry drained out of her body, leaving her a ragdoll with a lot of stress pain. People told her that she was brave, and that she had done so much, but to her, all she had done was survive. Many women who make it out of North Korea and into China aren't so lucky.

More than anything in the world, Yoona wants to pass that courage on to other girls. She wants them to know that they are worth so much more than they believe that they are. The girls with eating disorders, who hate their bodies, the ones who have been forced to sell their bodies for sex, the ones who come from families where their fathers or brothers beat them, she wants these girls to know that they are more. And maybe one day, just maybe, she will find a way to help more girls cross the border into China and make it out without being sold for a couple of hundred-dollar bills (American).

About Yoona

Yoona is an unusual case for Brook Haven Ranch. She grew up for the first ten years of her life in North Korea -- a country that starves its citizens and imprisons or executes them for such crimes as watching Western movies. For the majority of her life, she was exposed to what the Kim regime wanted her to be exposed to, and nothing that it did not. Life for Yoona meant guarding her thoughts, worshiping Kim Jong-Il and later Kim Jong-Un, and performing for tourists in order to leave them with a good impression of North Korea.

She experienced fear that no child should ever have to face, and when she finally made it out of North Korea and into China, she was sold by a conductor on the Underground Railroad as a slave. She took a price of $500 due to her virginity, but once her new master was finished with her, she was sold for only $250 and forced to serve clients who paid as little as $10 for her services. If she did not perform, she did not eat, and even then the meals were meager and rice-based.

Until she was rescued by an undercover conductor and smuggled out into Russia (and later to the American Consulate so that she could be sent to the United States), she had no idea how much courage it had taken her to survive for as long as she had. Once on American soil, she was referred to Brook Haven Ranch, and upon arriving, Yoona became entirely unglued. For the first time in her life, she didn't have to worry about what she would be eating and who might be touching her. For the first time in her life, she was safe. Her entire body developed severe aches as a result of the tension it had finally let go of, and she has begun to seek out social relationships with other people now.

She is very afraid of white adult males, and her social skills are at roughly the 10-11 year-old level due to her imprisonment and her enslavement. She struggles to socialize with other teenagers as a result of this, and therefore might be difficult with some people. Note that she does fine with black adult males and may be suspicious of adult males of Chinese descent.

Platonic

Yoona is sweet, expressive, and extroverted, but she is also quite shy. She doesn't trust adult white males, and she may be suspicious of Korean and Chinese males of all ages as well. Her circumstances and her life has entirely broken her trust in other people and she's scared of repeating what has happened to her in the past. While she wants to be around people and desires a wide circle of friends, she has trouble relating to Western people, and they may have trouble relating to her. Most of the ranch's students won't have any experience at all with girls who have been through the things that Yoona has faced, and she's not especially inclined toward people who have experience with human trafficking, making relating to her somewhat difficult.

I imagine that it's going to be hard for her to relate to other people, so friendships are going to be a bit of a struggle for her. That being said, she is definitely the type to seek out friends, so there isn't going to be a lot of chasing her down and forcing her to interact with your character. She wants to make friends and she will come to the people in her group and who are otherwise on the ranch seeking those types of relationships. There's no push-you-pull-me game here with Yoona. If you are female and show an interest in friendship, you will easily have a friend for life. Males will be taken on a case-by-case basis.

As a friend, Yoona will be enthusiastic and loyal. She's a real cheerleader for the people who she cares about, and she tries to give her friends what she most needs in a friendship: Encouragement. She won't ever ask for more than what she gives, and she's not the sort of person who is a natural "taker," but nor will she give and give and give until she's out of love to give. She'll work hard to see the balance, and her friends will need to understand that she's not willing to allow herself to be used and abused: She's gotten out of that life now.

Yoona does need people in her life, and it's important for her development that they be loyal and at least close to her own age (13-15 probably). I won't rule out people of other age groups, but these are the ones with whom she will relate the best. If you want to go through her hobbies and interests, this should give you a better idea of the types of things that she enjoys doing in terms of hooking her up with people whose interests are similar to her own. Mostly she just loves anything that she can do to express herself artistically.

Romantic

Romantic relationships are going to be complicated for Yoona. She is truly panromantic, so she's open to relationships with age-appropriate people of all genders, but she might be touchy about white males regardless of their age and she will probably be most comfortable with black males and Asian females. This is not to say that she won't give these people a shot, but it is going based on her personal experiences with sex (and those being what they are), and her being timid and afraid of somebody taking advantage of her.

Let me repeat: There is no gender preference for Yoona, though she may prefer that male partners belong to a particular race due to her past experience with rape.

She's timid in relationships, but desires romance just like most girls her own age. She is asexual, however, and she doesn't desire sexual relationships at all. There's nothing innocent about this: She's not a virgin and she's had plenty of experience of sex. The fact is that she doesn't want to be touched against her will, so she's going to be looking for a partner who is able to respect her boundaries and treat her with the respect that she deserves as a human being. Human rights are a huge issue in North Korea, and now that she's out, Yoona desires to be respected.

Initially she's not going to have a lot to give to a romantic partner because her parents weren't particularly romantic with one another and she's never had this kind of a relationship before. The person who wants to be her partner will need to be patient with her, as well as direct. He, she, or they will have to be up front and willing to tell her what she's doing right and what she's doing wrong. This will definitely be something that takes time for her, and I don't expect many players to have the patience for this.

Antagonistic

While Yoona is not the sort of person who would naturally make enemies easily, she is the sort of person who will have plenty of them. A lot of people are ignorant (for good reason) to what goes on within the borders of North Korea, and therefore there will probably be people who say things like "it's not that bad." Obviously she isn't going to get along well with people who support Communism of Fascism, and she won't do well with people who support North Korea. There are enough of them in the United States that she will feel a deep sense of shame for those who believe that she was fine in her home country -- she wasn't.

Because of everything that she has survived, Yoona is not afraid to confront her enemies directly. This does mean that on the one hand she's not going to wind up being the "mean girl" who bitches about you behind your back, but she will wind up being the kind of person who will step up to you (all 4'11" of her) and tell you just how it is. It's definitely a possibility that she could get into a physical altercation, because the worst that can happen is already something that's happened to her, and there isn't much that she fears any more. Whether this makes her formidable or not is up to you.

I'd like to see her wind up with a sincere enemy, though, somebody who either rubs her wrong or who dismisses what she's been through. I'd prefer to see this come out of somebody who is not the typical bully type person on the ranch, as I can actually see most of the current bullies almost identifying her. I'd love to see this come in the form of somebody who otherwise feels "safe" but who dismisses her experiences and makes out to others that she is lying about where she grew up. I might request a character like this, but we'll have to see.

Familiar

Yoona was separated from her father shortly after they crossed over the Chinese border from North Korean. Her mother was executed when on suspicion of attempted escape, and she has not seen her father since their separation.

Prior to this, their relationship was typical for the place where she grew up. Her parents were strict with her, demanding that she keep her mouth shut and guard her thoughts, lest Kim Jong-Il (the dictator at the time, in North Korea) read her mind and know that she was unhappy with his rule. They required her to worship the Kim family as a good North Korean would. Their discipline was virtually non-existent, however. Yoona lived in fear of the Kim regime, not of her parents, and their relationship, for this reason if for no other, was weak.

Yoona didn't know her parents well, and they didn't get to know her very well. There was little affection from them, and she grew up to crave affection. Whether her biological father is found or she goes on to get adopted, Yoona is going to need affection from her parents, and she will need to understand that they have the right to discipline her so that she doesn't get herself hurt in the future. These are important for her.

Other

Yoona is timid with, but also respectful toward, all authority figures that she comes into contact with. She may be fearful at first until she learns that there's no reason for her to fear her authorities, but once she opens up, she will be a powerhouse of activity and action, wanting to get involved everywhere.

First Impressions

She's super shy.

Yoona has a distinctly difficult time with people who she hasn't met before, and white males in particular will find her shy and timid. She keeps her head down when she speaks to them and she doesn't often have a lot to say. Her body language gives off the sense that she feels that she's in danger from them, even if they have done nothing to make her feel that way. This will probably be offensive to some (see below) but for the most part, people are going to think of her as being a very shy person who doesn't know how to speak for herself. They definitely aren't wrong.

What did I ever do to her?

The fact that Yoona is obviously frightened of people who fit a certain demographic (mostly white adult males, but also Chinese adult males) can be off-putting for some people. While she is ordinarily quite shy, the fact that she is downright fearful of some of these men is upsetting, unsettling, and can be offensive to those who literally have never done anything to her in her life. People don't find it easy to understand why someone is put off by them simply because they are who they are.

Stranger Impressions

Wow. That takes real courage. She must be brave!

The most likely thing that strangers will know about Yoona is that she made it out of North Korea through China. They may or may not know what happened to her in China, but they will know pretty quickly that she made it across the border of a very closed nation. Anyone with an understanding of what this means is going to understand that she did something worthy of incredible respect, and that it took courage for her, as a child, to make it out of China and into Russia. This is something that a lot of people don't manage to do successfully.

She's lying.

There will always be those who believe the propaganda, and these people are apt to think that Yoona is lying about the conditions in North Korea and her experience in China. She's heard this before, and she stands firm on what she saw and what happened to her. It might only have been one woman she watched executed for engaging with Western media, but she knows that it happens frequently, and she knows she's not the only person who was starving while she lived there. People who don't believe her are apt to be her enemies as well.

Friendly Impressions

She's been through a lot. I wish I could be more like her.

Yoona has been through a lot in her fourteen years. Initially her friends will know what happened to her better than those who are distant from her (though eventually she will begin to share more openly about her entire experience of being a refugee in China). They admire her and respect her for having done what she had to do in order to survive some of the most horrific conditions on earth, and many people will think that they want to be more like her, to have her courage. Yoona argues that she hopes they never have to, and that they wouldn't want to live her life.

She's so open about everything. Sometimes it's hard to hear.

More than anybody else, her friends hear what happened to her when she was in North Korea and China, and some of them will find that it's a lot to have to hear over and over again. Some of them won't want to hear about her story because it's difficult to process and it's hard to believe the things that humans will do to other humans. Her experience scarse them, and since most of her friends will be close to her own age, they are often terrified of her story and don't want to think that something like that could possibly happen to them as well.

Familiar Impressions

I wish there was a way to make it right for her again.

Yoona's biological family is absent. Her mother was killed and her father is missing. Her "family" is the people with whom she is closest on the ranch, the leaders most likely, who care about her. They want nothing more than to make things right for her again, to show her how brave she is and how strong she was to make it through what she did. They also know that there is nothing that they can do to take away the sorrow that she faced while she was in North Korea.

Rival Impressions

She needs to watch what she says or she's doing to get into trouble.

And there is another set of rivals who may argue that what she's saying is wrong, but only to save her own hide. People who defect from North Korea face imprisonment, starvation, and execution. Yoona's talking about what happened to her could present serious problems for her if she falls into the wrong hands, but while these rivals are trying to do something that might help to save her life, they have the wrong mindset as far as she is concerned. They will forever be aggravated with her.

How come she gets so much attention?

There is absolutely no question that Yoona gets a lot of attention. There are people who want to hear her story (because it's important) and there are ranch adults working with her on the Stockholm syndrome (brain washing by the North Korean and Chinese authorities). She has a lot of attention on her all the time, and other students (particularly those in her group) are frustrated that she seems to get more attention directed at her than they do on themselves.

Enemy Impressions

She needs to stop making a big deal out of everything.

The very most likely rivals that she's going to have are those who will debate her on the atrocities inside North Korea. There are people in the world who don't believe that it is that bad, and those who feel this way will likely wind up as enemies, but initially they will be people with whom she debates the issues of North Korean quality of life. If they understand her position, they may remain rivals, but if they continue to press, they will become enemies.

Authority Impressions

It's almost too easy to get her to obey.

While Yoona has a good mind and tends to make use of it, and she's a strong and empowered young person, she was taught how to follow the rules. When she's told to do something, he invariably does it quickly and with as much efficiency as possible. The authorities over her here on the ranch will want a bit more spirit from her, and that's something they will have to work at teaching her. They are surprised by how willing she is to do what they want her to do, even when it might conflict with what she wants to do.

Coworker/Partner Impressions

She's enthusiastic and she tries hard.

Among her group, it will be obvious very quickly that Yoona is a hard worker who puts her all into anything that she does. In North Korea, the workers are required to work six days a week and volunteer on the seventh day, so the work never ends. While this isn't necessarily an individual work ethic that she could have inherited from her parents, Yoona learned by watching others that work was important, so she throws her all into every project that she does with other people in her group. It's not always easy, but she will take on the leadership role if she has to.

Lover Impressions

It's frustrating that she won't let me touch her.

Yoona has been a sexual slave in China -- literally! -- and therefore she isn't keen to be touched by other people of any gender. This is frustrating to her romantic partner because she's asexual but doesn't know what that means. Teenagers are infamous for not taking into consideration the sexual or romantic needs of their partners, and therefore she's likely to be met with short relationships unless she can find somebody else who is just as ace as she is and who is therefore safe for her.

Self-Impressions

I don't understand why everybody keeps saying that I'm so brave. I did what I had to do to survive.

Yoona doesn't see herself as some sort of hero for the resistance. She was taken out of North Korea by her father, who was a defector, and they were separated. She was sold to a man who abused her for sexual purposes and then sold again to a man who would rent her out to tourists as a sexual slave. All she did was what she had to do just to make it through from day to day in one of the worst places on earth. She cannot fathom why anybody would think that she's brave. She didn't take any initiative: Her father took her into China, and then she was later rescued by a conductor on the underground railroad.

Post-Mortem Impressions

She was a brave girl who inspired a lot of people.

No matter what Yoona thinks of herself, she inspired a lot of people with the courage that it took to talk about her story and to tell others about what's going on in North Korea and China every day of the year. People have benefited from hearing her story and now that she is gone, they will continue to tell that story into the future so that other girls can be rescued from the horrors that she faced.

Mun Impressions

I just want to use this space to say that I was inspired to make Yoona after hearing the stories of two women who made it out of North Korea through China. Her story adapts some of their tellings, both of them different, but I felt compelled to make her. She's actually my second refugee character, and will likely be the last.

Habits

Reading the News

Because she is at Brook Haven and electronics aren't allowed (something that strangely comforts our little Yoona), Yoona insists on having a national paper delivered to her so that she can read the news. It's a small accommodation that the ranch can make for her that will also serve the others on the ranch who wish to read the national news. This is her way of keeping up with what's going on in the world, since this was a luxury which was not afforded to her in North Korea. She has discovered how terrifying it can be to be so cut off -- but also how terrifying it can be to be so plugged in.

Thought Control

Growing up in -- or living in -- North Korea comes with the fear that the Kims are gods. In fact, North Koreans are taught that their supreme rules are gods, and that they are able to read their minds. Therefore, Yoona has learned how to carefully guard her thoughts based on two fears. The first is that Kim Jong-Un will hear her thoughts and know how much she hated his rule (and before him, Kim Jong-Il), and two, that he will be able to locate her based on her thoughts and therefore drag her back to a country where she hardly got enough to eat. For this reason, she is very careful to guard her own thoughts and has mostly learned how to turn off negative thoughts (though not negative emotions). Yoona works very hard at this.

A Little Extra for Later

Since she was born, Yoona has never had enough to eat. Her diet has been mostly raced on rice and beans, and she's never had quite enough to get her through to the next meal. She's been skinny for her entire life, emaciated when she made it into Russia, and hungry when she escaped (with help) to the United States. Food is something that has never been readily available to her, and so Yoona nearly always sneaks some of it out of the dining hall and into her cabin. This is going to cause a lot of problems later on, but it's her way of guaranteeing that there will always be food "for later."

Quirks

Fearful of Adult White Males

Yoona's fear of males is very specific to white males over the age of sixteen, as well as Chinese males over the age of thirty. These are the people who were most involved in her torment in China and she is terrified of this behavior happening again. She isn't in the least bit afraid of people in other demographics, and might even come across as quite bold when it comes to talking to other people (as she is extroverted), but she

Outspoken about Atrocities

While many abuse victims are tight-lipped about their experiences, Yoona is a talker. She wants people to hear about what's going on in North Korea so that she can expose the country for what it is and hopefully get help for more women and girls attempting to escape over the Chinese border. Many of these women, as she is prone to telling people, won't make it out alive, and those who do will either be repatriated and sent to internment camps, or they will be sold into the sex trade in China. She wants the world to see that China must stop repatriating North Koreans and allow them to have the opportunity to live outside of his oppressive rule.

Broken English

Though she is learning the language very quickly, Yoona is not a native English speaker. She was not permitted to listen to the language in her home country, and so she has had an uphill battle to learn English quickly in order to participate in the programs on the ranch. She's getting better, but this is something that will hinder her for quite some time and that partners will want to be aware of. She's a bubbly, chattery little thing when she's not feeling oppressed (i.e. when she's with friends), but that doesn't always mean that she'll do it in English.

Hobbies

Self-Expression

Self-expression is very limited in a dictatorship, and Yoona grew up without any means of expressing herself. She loves everything to do with self-expression, from writing and calligraphy to painting and drawing. Painting is her favorite due to her fascination with classic painters, and she'd love to be as good as they are one day. This is a relatively new skill for her but is also something that she loves, and she can be found often in the art studio when she has the free time. She'd rather do this than spend time with her horse!

Museum Hopping

It was a very brief opportunity when she first came to America, but Yoona loves to hop from one museum to the next. There is so much art to discover in the world and she loves to see everything that came before her. In North Korea she could only view or read what was sanctioned by the Kims, so now that she is here, she wants to see everything that she's missed out on in the past. She will choose to visit a museum of any type any day of the week that she's allowed to choose an activity outside of the ranch.

Reading

Reading might be the best way that Yoona is picking up English as quickly as she is. She's never had much reading material that wasn't given to her by government schools in North Korea, and so she's eager to explore all of the different facets of books that she can. She loves fantasy and science fiction in particular (though the science fiction hits a bit close to home in terms of what North Korea claimed to have at its disposal while she was living there). She's got a voracious appetite for any reading materials she can get her hands on, whether they are books or newspapers.

Skills

English • Poor

Yoona is still learning, but for the time being, her English is rather poor. She's had a hard time catching on because in North Korean, the citizens are taught that anything from the West is evil, and that Westerners are out to get them. They are taught that they are safe where they are, and so the use of the English language is restricted to what they need in order to keep the tourists happy. She's still overcoming some of her Stockholm Syndrome and therefore learning as much as she can about the new language.

Painting • Excellent

Yoona is surprisingly good with paints and a brush for somebody who has never used them before coming to the United States. She's great on canvas or on paper, and is currently experimenting with acrylic and oil paints, but thinks that she loves the watercolors the most for personal use. She tends to emulate her favorite artists, and is fond of classical artwork (hence her love of museums). The ability to express herself is more important to Yoona than being good at painting, but she's become quite good quite quickly regardless!

Public Speaking • Remarkable

For someone so small, so young, and ultimately so afraid, Yoona is a remarkable public speaker. She's learned well how to stand up in front of people and talk about the things that she's experienced and the atrocities in North Korea that she's witnessed. This is her way of helping other people who are still trying to escape the republic, as well as to help those who may still be trapped in China. And her voice is being heard. If the ranch would let her, she'd sign on for public speaking engagements across the country.

Playing Komungo • Excellent

When she was a little girl, Yoona's parents pushed her to learn how to play the Komungo. This is a traditional Korean instrument, and most children are taught to play something in the service of their country. She learned how to play so that she could play and sing for tourists, and while her voice is unremarkable, she is quite good at playing the stringed instrument of her country. She'll have no reason at all to pick it up again now that she's living at Brook Haven Ranch, but if somebody had one and asked her to play, she would be able to .

Interests

History

Throughout her growing-up years, Yoona was taught a modified history: The one that the Kims wanted her to know. Now that she's free of the republic, she wants to learn as much as she can about the real history of the world. She devours anything related to any kind of history at all, and is especially fascinated with the true history of her own country. The more history books she can get her hands on that are written in her native language, the more that she will learn and grow and discover that she's not the only one who made it out alive.

Current Events

Living in North Korea and then living as a slave in China, Yoona was mostly protected from the horrors that are currently taking place in the world. Now that she's out, for the first time she can learn about nuclear arms and terrorism, and she wants to know more because this is how she will use her knowledge to become an activist for the people who can't speak for themselves. She is an avid devourer of any news she can get.

Art

In spite of growing up being spoon fed the art that the Kims wanted her to see, Yoona has developed a deep and abiding passion for art in all of its forms. She loves museums and could spend days going in and out of the galleries and exhibits as she discovers new things. Her favorite is classical art, and she has a passion for Van Gogh. She's attempted to recreate some of his paintings herself, but believes that she lacks any real talent. While she's no Van Gogh, she does have the talent to be a skilled painter one day.

Religion

There is no religion in North Korea (much as there is no religion in Cuba) and therefore Yoona has come out of the republic seeking knowledge of anything related to religion that she can. She wishes to become religious and to find a god, because if she can find a god then that god will replace Kim Jong-Un as the god of North Korea. She needs that in her life, something to believe in, but is somewhat stuck in her atheist ways. It's difficult to change when you've been taught one thing for your entire life.

Food

(Should I have left the bacon ipsum in here? It seems appropriate!) Yoona never had enough to eat when she was living in North Korea and China, and she loves food. She was fed a small variety of rice and bean dishes when she was living in North Korea and China, and now she's ready to expand her palate by trying new foods that taste different. She loves experimenting and exploring with things that she's never had the chance to taste before.

Desired Plots

Oops. How did that get there?

Yoona hoards food under her bed and in her drawers and among her clothing and even in the bathroom if she has to. She's never sure where her next meal is going to come from, and even though the ranch offers her unprecedented food security (for her at least), she is always nervous that there isn't going to be enough and that she's going to be short on food.

I am, therefore, looking for a thread in which the hoarded food is discovered, probably by another Ridgerunner girl who can call her out on it. We're going to need to start working on assigning cabins since there are only six students to a cabin, but it would be great if one of the other girls in her cabin complained about the odor (once this plot is started, that is) and the hoarding is discovered. This will open up the door in her story arc for somebody to explain to her that there will always be enough food as long as she's on the ranch.

Pull That Trigger

Yoona is triggered by adult white males. There are going to be plenty of them around, and the vast majority of them are not interested in having sexual relationships with a minor. However, Yoona's perception of people in this demographic is that they are interested in one thing: her body. Her owner was paid by white tourists (sixteen and older) in order to have sex with her. She never saw a dime of the money, but she more than tripled her cost by the time that she was rescued from China.

I'd like for her to be triggered (deliberately by the player, deliberately or not by the character) by the presence of an adult, white male. She's open about what's happened to her, but if the right person pushes her and then provides stability for her and proves that they can touch her without touching her, this would be a huge step for her to recover from her fear. It won't be immediate, but it's a step in the right direction!

Who knew you could do that!

I would also love it if somebody discovered that she has some actual talent for painting. She's not what I would classify as a prodigy (I have a painting prodigy and Yoona's work is nothing like Toby's), but she's good enough and interested enough that this should be fostered by somebody who is interested in her artwork. They are probably already aware that she does well playing the Komungo, but not that she can paint especially well, and having somebody discover and foster this would be a wonderful part of her story arc that could teach her that she's more than a face that can speak out about things that have happened to her.

Keith & Yoona
Keith is my only ridgerunner (for now!), and I have a rule about plotting my leaders with characters first, so here goes. I think Keith is going to like Yoona, a lot, like adopt her should the situation present itself, sort of like. She's a good kid who's been through hell and I'm really looking forward to seeing these two in play together. I'd love to do a thread between them. I think it's going to be really interesting to see how she reacts to him given her past and that he's a white male -- it could be a ton of fun developing this relationship as they work to establish trust, especially if he was the one that discovered she was hoarding food. Let me know what you think!

Yoona & Amelia RoseI can see the two of them being very comfortable around each other. Their lives have both been regulated (in very different ways, but it's still a thing that is a common thread between them), and so there might be an understanding of discipline between them. Also-- like you pointed out-- Yoona wouldn't be inclined to try and find out Amelia Rose's ulterior motives. Which I think might stress Amelia Rose out at first, but then she would find it refreshing, and freeing (and familiar as it was the kind of relationship she's had with close friends in the past). Ooo! I think it would be so interesting to throw them together during a snack/meal time. Amelia Rose is physically doing better, but mentally is still holding a lot of resentment towards the eating portion of the program. So she still gets very stressed while eating, and having to eat in front of other people. It would be an opportunity for her to either try and use a person for very minor support, or come to terms with how it's an issue (not in like a huge way, but enough that it would be interesting). Hit me back!

Yoona & Evan
In light of this week’s encouragement, my instinct was to throw my nervous one at Yoona so let’s do the abrasive one instead! I think what is interesting is that they’d likely both be terrified of one another. Evan is effectively a man at his height and size, as well as white and always with a sour expression. That sounds exactly like who Yoona is afraid of. Evan on the other hand is terrified of hurting her. At sub 5ft tall and <100lbs (can’t remember her exact weight) she is literally half his size and would remind him strongly of an actual child. She is exactly the type of person he would avoid because he’s afraid of losing his temper and a simple shove would send her into the wall. Side note: I was rereading Bella and Ronnie and I think it’s funny that all the females in his group are <5’0”.

I am hesitant even making this comparison but they’re both experiencing degrees of freedom they’re not used to having. Yoona from her captors/leaders, Evan from being in a correctional facility. They’re both likely going to and try and explore their new-found freedom. I like that they both are exploring through food specifically, though in different ways.

It sounds like they both need to learn not all touch can be positive. Her to him recognizing that he is not interested in her physically and has no intent in touching her that way. Him learning that he’s not going to break her in half by gently offering her a pencil.

The problem is different years, different riding-style, different interests (minus food), and different support groups. I think the likeliest scenario of them getting together is either through a shared punishment (which I feel staff would be mindful of considering her SA history) or a raid through the kitchenette. I’m not worried about his anger around Yoona because he focuses specifically on not losing it around smaller people.

Or you know. We can go completely the opposite direction. Scare the ever-loving shit out of her and temporarily reaffirm her impression of white men if she comes across him, veins bulging. Maybe if she made an innocent comment on his lisp?

I’m partial to a positive experience because they can both use some positivity in their lives. But let me know!

Yoona & FelixArt friends! But in all honesty-- I do think that these two would be interesting together. I know that she is triggered by white adult males-- and he is almost an adult, and will most likely inadvertently trigger something at some point? However, I do see Yoona speaking to Felix's quieter side. He would probably see her as someone to figure out, and observe her from a far-- just because she isn't someone that he could quickly figure out from one interaction (with his mirror stuff). At first I see him thinking of her as a puzzle-- which sounds a little harsher than I mean it to be. Think more along the lines of "I find you very interesting so I'm going to learn about you"-- which would eventually lead him to discovering her love for art, and getting to share his passion with her. I know this is super opened ended, but thoughts?Hit me back!

Nolan's been in foster care since he was two. He excelled at academics, and spent most of his childhood keeping apart from the other foster kids, believing that his intelligence made him special. When he hit his teens, that began falling apart as the competition to be the best student around intensified. His escalating emotions led him to brandish a knife at a foster parent, which got him sent to a group home. Teachers who worried about his performance recommended him to Brook haven.

I don't have any specific thread ideas, but if she can get over him being a white male, I agree that they seem like they might be friends. I think Nolan is someone who can look past the ways her social skills are behind, and being asked for his notes is the sort of thing that he'd appreciate. Nolan would be really curious about her experiences in North Korea; he wouldn't push her in any given conversation, but it would take a really strong reaction to get him to stop asking her about them every so often.
