Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

About Marc

» Marc is the oldest of his siblings.

Marc is the eldest. He was a planned child, and in many ways a "golden child". His parents thought that he was the key to them getting their inheritance and that they could prove that they could handle it by showing him off. There was a lot of pressure in this position. He didn't rebel with anything that wasn't untypical, and because his parents weren't wealthy, even if they ran in those circles, he didn't grow up an entitled prick.

» He's always been close with his siblings -- closest with Rachel.

Marc's always been fairly close with his siblings, even with the considerable age difference, but he's closest to Rachel. He was there the day she was born and that had an instantaneous bond that's held true over the years. He loves her, and it upsets him that his parents treat her differently than they do Jake and Leah.

» Marc fought for custody of his sister's daughter on Rachel's behalf -- then was awarded custody himself.

Marc fought the courts for custody to be reinstated to his sister after he found out that she'd been strong armed into an adoption that she didn't want to. Because of her run-in with the law and the fact that she had parents that were unwilling to support her and the child, the judge denied his request, but granted him guardianship because he did believe that being with a blood relative was important for a child that had lacked stability.

» Marc grew up with high expectations.

Growing up, the expectations were high. He had the ones from his parents, and the expectations from both sets of grandparents. Everyone wanted something ever so slightly different, and yet, they all seemed to agree when Marc wanted to deviate from tradition. There was the pressure to socialize and make small talk, to socialize with people of importance, even if they were a jerk. There were the lessons, and the tutoring, and the dancing, and very little personal time in between. While his childhood wasn't the happiest, he is grateful for the lessons he learned.

» Marc is expected to uphold the family name.

He can't think of anything worse than sullying the family name. As it is, his father already does a pretty good job of it, and he can't imagine bringing that sort of shame to his family again. He's expected to do good things, and he's going to do all that he can.

» Marc has a daughter.

Marc was 21 when Scarlett was born. He and Elena were a couple at the time, but prior to that, they had been friends. Things didn't work out for them, but they maintained their friendship and attempted to raise their daughter together until the day that Elena got married and moved across the country to California, taking Scarlett with her.

» Marc took over custody of his sister.

When his parents relinquished custody of his sister, he took over her care. He hasn't seen Rachel since she came to Brook Haven, but she's a big part of the reason for his move to Montana. He thought that she needed a fresh start and the Brook Haven might be able to help her deal with and heal from some the things she's had to endure. What he wants most for her is for her to be happy.

» Marc donated one million dollars to Brook Haven Ranch.

It's a big donation to the ranch, and he'd like to keep them coming in by drawing attention to what it is that the ranch does. He's yet to get the approval to make that a thing, but he'd really like for the ranch to be able to be stable enough financially that they don't have to worry about years down the road, because he finds what they do for these kids admirable. The teens that come to the ranch, have some of the best minds in the country working with them, helping to get through and come to terms with what it is that they're dealing with. The fact that they deal, primarily, in foster kids, really speaks to his heart.

Best in the country

While looking for a good situation for Rachel, Marc discovered the ranch through some of his connections. He went into the meeting, aware of the fact that the program was primarily designed for foster children, and unsure whether or not there would be room for Rachel, or what would be expected of him as her guardian during the time in which they worked with her.

Going in, he'd been aware that they'd come highly recommended, but it wasn't until he really got a look at their operation that he realized that this could very well be one of the best things of it's variety in the country. So many highly qualified professionals at these student's disposal, there for the moment when they're needed and otherwise serving daily functions on a ranch. The whole operation was actually quite impressive, despite having been shut down recently, he found himself willing to offer whatever necessary to be able to provide his sister with this; because in his book, this was exactly what she needed, and should have had in the place of her time in juvenile detention.

Since his visit to the ranch, it's been hard for him to get it out of his head. He wants to see them succeed and as an heir to more money than he can ever imagine spending, he's been in a position to help make sure that they do. Whether he helped was never contingent on whether or not they decided to take Rachel on, and so he never said anything to Logan Brook on the subject, and instead arranged a meeting with their head of finance on a separate day.

It's not that this is a secret, because it's not. Marc just isn't the kind of guy to broadcast something like "I just donated a large sum of money to this project because I could.", and instead he'd rather work with the kids like anyone else.

Not that simple

Marc is going to struggle with his sister, especially at first. When it came to making a decision about what to do with her, it was hard. There was no way he'd ever let her go into foster care, and while he fully recognizes that she paid her dues by going away to jail, he knows that there's going to be consequences for that, and he wants her to have the best chance of really being able to come back from it.

So many times, kids who wind up in juvie end up having a whole host of issues, some of which are caused by the institutionalization itself. Marc isn't sure of what his parents' motivation was with this move in not getting her a defense attorney that was more apt to work in her favor, but he's upset with all involved. Ultimately, Rachel's decisions were hers, but something could have been done.

So here he is, picking up the mess to the best of his ability, hoping to take the pieces and line them up perfectly. Sending Rachel off without a word wasn't the best solution, but it was a solution and recommended one at that.

Child of Mine

When his daughter was first born, he thought that he was going to be able to work things out with her mother, but the more they tried, the more it all fell apart. Eventually, they decided that it was in everyone's best interest if they split up and shared custody of their daughter. They both loved Scarlett, and in that way, they were still a happy family. When she was younger, she could stay with him for the weekend, but the older she got, the less she wanted to sacrifice her her weekends and vacations to spend it with her dad. Trying to make up the difference, Elena and he tried to start having family dinners together, to give their daughter time with both her parents, despite the fact that each of them had moved on with other partners by that point in time.

It was all an attempt to give Scarlet the best they could, and it this case, it wasn't a couple of jaded people that hated one another guts, it was friends that became more, that then sort of fell apart as a couple.

Scarlett was ten when her mother married another man, and with the marriage came a huge move to California, it rocked Marc's world. For the first time ever, if the school called him, he wouldn't be available to just come and get her if she had a fever. He couldn't surprise her with a weekend trip to Georgia at the last minute, because everything from that point forward was going to involve planning, but he also couldn't tell her mother "no."

And so, he waved goodbye to his baby as she got into a cab to to go the airport, all packed up for a trip across the country.

It's been difficult since the move, because life for him changed. He wasn't at a point in his career where he could just follow them out without throwing away everything. He comforted himself with the fact that he knew that she was well cared for, and that there was the summer and holidays. And he still does. Even with the big move to Montana, it's not exactly a day trip and a weekend stay.

Marc struggles with the guilt with Scarlett, but he does the best that he can, and should she need him, he'll find a way to make it work.

My sister's child

Rachel had her child taken from her arms before she knew what the babies' sex was, and by the time Marc found out about it, he was furious. Thankfully, he got there in time to put a halt on any and all proceedings with the baby, got a judge to see reason, and while he concluded that a girl as young as Rachel without parental support wasn't fit to care for a child, he'd be willing to relinquish the baby into Marc's care until such time that the situation changed. It was a long process, and it has occurred to him that Fae got caught in the crossfire while it took place, but he's always tried to do what he thought was best. By the time he got the news, his sister had managed to wind up in serious trouble with the law, and delivering the news while she was locked up hadn't seemed appropriate, and so she hadn't.

Evan wasn't ready to parent, and while his parents were supportive and good people in Marc's book, they had a lot going on to take on a new addition and so he's kept and continued to raise his niece, much like he had Scarlett.

He can't wait to introduce his sister to her daughter.

Guardian

When his parents gave up custody of Rachel, Marc stepped in. Nothing pisses him off much more than irresponsibility, and unfortunately for his parents, it's a cornerstone of who they are. The fact that they'd just write their child off like that really grates, and he's spent her time on the ranch trying to figure out how he's going to explain their parents actions to her, because it's going to hurt, and it's going to damage her ability to trust him. It hasn't occurred to him that having her taken directly to Brook Haven following juvie might play a role in that as well.

Heir to a fortune

Marc is an heir. Most of his money is old family money, and there's more than what he could ever imagine spending there, which is why he's involved with a wonderful investment firm AND that he's decided on a certain minimum amount going to charities of his choosing, before the time comes that he passes and hands that baton down to the next person in line. It's about more than just money and good lives, for Marc, he wants to be known as more than an heir to a fortune; he wants to be known as a philanthropist that backed his words up with action, and did good things with all that money.

About Marc

Marc is one of the ranch's financiers, and he's also older brother and guardian to some of students coming into the ranch. His primary interest in the ranch had been for his little sister, but after learning more about the program, he decided to really jump in with both feet. Most of his money comes from the family fortune, and while he's taken on a wonderful investment firm to help him continue to make sure that the money is available for future generations, he himself isn't involved in some sort of corporate position. His real calling has always been working with kids, because he firmly believes that they are the future, and that problems can be solved by making sure that they have the things that they need.

So, he has plans for the ranch, some of which the Brooks haven't even been made aware of yet.

With all that said, you can suffice it to say that he's a fairly powerful guy through money and connections, and he's interested in making sure that money isn't something that this ranch ever needs to worry about. He has big plans, and he refuses to promise something he can't deliver, but he does intend to bring attention to the good things that they do, in a big way.

At his core, Marc's just a good guy with good intentions. Family means everything to him, and before he leaves this earth he wants to leave a mark on it and a mark on the hearts of the people that live on it.

Marc will be volunteering at the ranch, and he happens to live on his own, which means he'll be attending church locally and getting know people through the town and ranch events.

Platonic

Friends of his could come from all walks of life. Marc is almost always up for socializing with good people, and even if he's not, he pretends like he is, because that was the expectation that his grandparents had of him when he was growing up. He's a really stable guy, and if he calls you friend, you can count on him to have your back the best that he can, and sometimes this means calling you out when your wrong. He's learned that sometimes it's good to bite your lip, but over the years, Marc has also learned that sometimes the best thing you can do for your friend is to be honest (I almost said awesome).

Many of his friends may be met through social affairs, while others could be met through the ranch, his previous positions at schools, or through the ranch. For the most part, he's a friendly guy, and he's likely to be kind to most.

With that said, I have a few positions I'd like to throw out there.

Fellow Philanthropist I'd love for him to make a friend that's into philanthropy projects as much as Marc is. It doesn't have to be the exact same cause (kids, particularly foster kids in the country), but it would be awesome if this person DID have their heart in the same place as Marc. Either way, someone who can relate to him wanting to help and bring light to what so many of these kids go through and shouldn't have to. This could be a really good starting point for them on the friendship front, and something that could grow through friendly chats and bourbon sweet tea (sort of kidding) back at his place.

Unlikely FriendsThis slot could belong to a teen or adult (and could be filled more than once) by someone who just isn't interested in giving Marc the time of day for whatever reason (you choose). Marc isn't likely to stretch for a relationship, he has plenty good ones, but it might be interesting for a friendship to develop by each of them just being themselves.

Church Friends I think he's going to be going to Holy Trinity for church, so there's possibilities when it comes to potential friends through the church. When it comes to his spiritual life, he's a little more traditional.

The ideas above were just that, so if you have anything you'd like to throw my way, please do!

Romantic

There is some pressure on Marc to settle down and get married, and while he can appreciate all of that, it's not his primary goal in life. He's had a few relationships, but he isn't interested in anything scandalous and would father have some who takes the time to get to know him. Before his maternal grandparents passed there had been some attempts at matchmaking, and it never really worked out for him. Not that people who ran in his grandparents' circles weren't great, because some of them were, but those they thought they could set him up weren't ever quite right. And then there was Elena.

I think it's important to mention here that Marc doesn't suffer drama well. So, if a woman gets particularly, clingy, whiney, or dramatic he's likely to drop her like a hot potato. He doesn't have the time or energy for it, he's got a lot going on between taking on his younger siblings, juggling his niece, his projects, and his dream of opening his own school. What he needs is someone who can stand beside him and support him when even he doesn't realize he needs it.

The following are possible ideas that I figured I could throw out there.

Blast from the past. This idea is based on him running into someone he knew in high school, which was, admittedly, a very different time. It might be interesting to see two people who each other that many years ago found that someone they weren't interested in the least is someone that they might be interested in now. This woman would need be from or have lived in the same he did, and have attended to same private high school that he did.

Friend of the family. Someone who runs in the same circles, perhaps that he even knows well, but it's never been a good time for one or the other might be interesting. I'd want them to be genuinely interested in each other first, but I do think it could make for an intriguing relationship, given that it would be a match that would make both their families happy (not that Marc cares about that, because his love life is where he draws the line).

Obviously, these aren't the only scenarios that work, but I thought I'd throw them out there just in case.

Antagonistic

Marc is far from a perfect angel, and while he isn't the type to get into a fist fight, he's one of those guys that will tell you off in such a way that you often don't know which way to turn when he does. He can be intolerant of views that aren't his own, and I feel like this is the primary reason for an antagonistic sort of a relationship -- he doesn't tolerate it well, and he also doesn't deal well with folks who make a choice to be oblivious.

Rudeness is another big thing for him, so do with that what you will, but it isn't going to earn you a place as a friend in his book. Marc is actually quite proper when it comes to manners, and it wouldn't surprise me if he tacked on a "Ma'am/Sir" if he over heard a student answering someone in authority over them with a "Yes or No". It's just what was expected from him when he was younger, and he, in return, expects it of the next generation.

Rich KidSomething with this kid is actually going to go into his desired plots section, but I figured it'd be worth mentioning it here anyways. With that said, here we go. Marc is the kind of guy who's going to dig deep when it comes to the ranch. He won't just write them a check and leave it at that, he's going to volunteer his time as well, working with some of these kids and helping out on the ranch. I'd love for there to be a kid that has come in with privilege and attempts to look down their nose at Marc, and who attempts to balk at the idea of him being anything more than a ranch hand.

Familiar

Marc currently has custody of both his sister and his niece, is a father of a daughter who makes infrequent visits due to a busy life, and is interested in gaining custody of his younger brother and sister on the grounds that their father isn't fit to be raising children and that their mother is simply too likely to enable him. In his opinion, this isn't a good way for children to grow up, and because of their (living) grandparents distaste for their son's behavior, they aren't likely to look too deeply at the home life.

He's always had a strong relationship with Rachel, and he wants what's best for her, which was why he applied for kinship care when his parents relinquished her to the state. It's also played a role in why he fought so hard for her daughter, Fae, and committed to caring for and raising her until which time Rachel was ready, willing, and able to take that over.

Each of his relationships in his family are different, depending on who it is that he's dealing with and how close he is to them.

First Impressions

Stand up guy.

Marc is quick to help out a person in need, and between that, a good firm handshake, a friendly smile, and good manners he easily comes across as one of the good guys when meeting people. He has a genuine interest in people he's interacting with, and it comes across that way fairly quickly. He's the sort of guy that you meet and you just have a feeling that he'll be there that moment when he's needed most.

Busy man.

He's juggling a lot between the move, a four year old, time on the ranch, getting to know the community, and working on finding work in the area. This is really apparent when you first meet him, but it's also obvious that while it's not perfect, he seems to have it under control.

Stranger Impressions

Is he really a Vanderbilt?

Most people in the U.S. have heard of the name Vanderbilt before and know that it's linked to money. What most don't know is that Cornelius Vanderbilt was known in history for being the richest man in American history. The idea that he could actually be related to that name might be intimidating for some people, and things might get more difficult when they realize he is.

All for his sister?

The fact that he picked up and moved across the country for his sister might be astonishing for some, and heartwarming for others. Family means everything to Marc, and his siblings deserve everything that he can give them. These sort of rumors tend to fly in small towns, so it wouldn't be surprising if there's talk of how he picked up and moved for his siblings -- only question is, why Montana?

Friendly guy.

Around town, Marc is social, kind, and always ready to offer a smile. People who don't know him, probably see him as a friendly guy that likes to pop into the diner when he's in town, and he's always got that little one of his with him.

Maybe he's up to something...

Some people might be suspicious, between his name and the fact that he bought out the old McMurry ranch even though he doesn't have any ranching experience could make a person nervous. Is he a developer? Does he want to bring in big business? What is it that he's up to?

Marc Vanderbilt, the philanthropist?

Depending on what circles you run in, you may or may not know of Marc. Away from small town, Montana, he's known as a philanthropist that donates time and money to causes that he finds worthy. The thing is, no one quite knows what his criteria are.

Friendly Impressions

How does he do it?

Friends of Marc understand exactly how busy he really is, and it regularly amazes them that he manages to juggle everything on his plate. He's dealing with a big move, family social demands, raising his niece, balancing his siblings, working on the dream of starting his own school, and working with the ranch and the students there. His plate is fairly full, and when you add social demands, it's a wonder that he manages to make it all work.

Never drunk, but typically drinking.

Marc isn't the type to get drunk and he doesn't have an issue with alcohol in the slightest, but in social situations it's very typical to see him with a drink in his hand. He's that friend that you can count on the break the alcohol ice in highly social situations where it is available.

Familiar Impressions

Good Grandson.

Marc has a good relationship with his grandparents. In many ways, Marc is what they wish his parents were, and they can't help but to be proud of him for the accomplishments he's made and the goals he has for his life. That he is a respectable adult that they can point out in a room while talking with their friends makes them proud.

We wish he'd get married.

At 36, quite a few of his family members are wondering why it is that he hasn't settled down with a family of his own. While being a perpetual bachelor sounds nice, it simply isn't realistic and they'd like to see him settle, sooner rather than later.

Absent brother.

Marc has always been closest with his little sister Rachel, and that's not to say that his other siblings don't mean something to him, because they do. However, with so much focus on his sister, it's easy to understand why they might see him as having abandoned them. Heck, even Rachel sees him as having abandoned her for now (part of that's because she has no idea how much he's had her back).

Amazing brother.

When his siblings aren't upset with him, they see him as awesome and steady. He's there for them when they need him, and he's gotten them out of more than a few sticky situations.

Not my parent.

Since Marc is going to be taking over custody of his younger siblings, it's easy to see why there might be some tension. Their whole lives are about to change, and to them it's going to be his fault. He won't let his little brother have his freedom, and he has high expectations of the girls.

Rival Impressions

He doesn't give up.

Ever persistent, it occurs to most of his rivals fairly early on that he isn't one to give up. Just because there's an obstacle doesn't mean that it's time to throw in towel, it means he's going to work even harder. His rivals know this about him and have to take it into consideration.

Doesn't always play by the rules.

It occurs to his rivals that Marc doesn't always play by the rules, and part of the reason for that is because he doesn't have to. The truth of the matter is that they aren't wrong. If there's a rule that needs to broken for the betterment of himself, one of his causes, or someone he cares about then there's a good chance that it will be.

He's reaching.

Prior to his move, Marc worked as a Principal, and while it's not necessarily vastly different than running his own school, it is different, and some of his rivals may be under the impression that he's really reaching with this dream of his. An elite school in Montana? Who's going to want to send their kids there? He doesn't really know what he's getting himself into.

Enemy Impressions

Not in our town.

Some people in town are under the impression (for some reason Marc can't comprehend) that he's a developer, and out to buy up ranches in the area. Some don't like that he's come to town, ready to bend it to his will. While none of this is true, and baffles Marc, it doesn't change the fact that there are some in town that believe that he's "out to get them".

Watch out. He'll bite your head off.

Marc doesn't like it when people are rude and disrespectful, so people who've tried it, quickly learn that he doesn't tolerate it well. He will put you in your place, and he isn't always nice about it either. People who've had this sort of a run in might not appreciate that sort of approach, and find him unstable.

Authority Impressions

He's got a lot of ideas.

Marc loves working with kids. After all, it's what he does when he's working, and that has left him with a lot of tools. He got ideas of his own when it comes to working with the kids on the ranch, and while they may not work for everyone, they work for him and it shows.

I wish he'd be a little more open with me.

Marc tends to exude this vibe that says "he wants something" but no one really knows what it is. It's not that he's scheming, because he isn't, but it's an impression that leaves people unsure of his next step.

Subordinate Impressions

He's demanding

People who work for Marc learn quickly that he's demanding. As a principal, he's demanding of his teachers and staff and of his students. He expects everyone to put their best into every day and while he's willing to accept that everyone has a bad day, he's not willing to accept it as excuse to continually make poor choices. He's demanding and hard on people under him, and while some can appreciate that he holds them to a high standards, other crack.

I know I can go to him.

If there's a problem and you need someone to talk to or troubleshoot with, Marc is your guy. If he can help you to come up with a solution to your problem he will. He won't solve it for you, because he doesn't feel like it helps the situation, but instead he helps people learn to solve their own problems. He also has an open door policy. More often than not, all of this leaves people feeling like they can really come to him.

Problem solver.

Marc isn't the sort to simply let a problem be. He will want to solve it or to help someone else solve it. Leaving it be simply isn't an option for him, and people who come to him with their problems know this, or they learn it quickly.

Lover Impressions

He has so many obligations.

Marc is a busy guy with a lot going on his life. Anyone involved in a relationship with him is going to have to understand this and be capable of dealing with the fact that he has quite a few demands on his time. It can be difficult for people he's in a relationship to understand that his siblings need him and that he needs to be able to be there for them.

It's good to know that I matter.

Marc is really good about making his lovers feel important. He gives them time and attention, but he also loves to surprise them with something they haven't asked for. It's important for him to make those he cares about feel important, and it tends to work. Deliveries of flowers and chocolates, tickets to a play, or other important things makes some women feel special.

Will I fit in with his family?

It depends on the woman and how serious she is about making it in his world, but it's a rational concern for someone who's lived a much different life from him. His family does have some expectations of him, so it's a reasonable fear, not that Marc would see it that way.

Self-Impressions

I'm just a guy.

Marc likes himself as the person that he is -- the guy who tries his best to help his family and make a difference in the lives of the teenagers that he can reach. He's far from the best guy in the room, but he's got good intentions and he likes to think that most people in the world are this way (even if experience tells him it isn't true). He does the best he can for the people he loves and the people who speak to his heart.

Post-Mortem Impressions

Marc will be remembered by many, whether it's as the brother who tried his best, the husband who was present, the father who gave his children everything he could, or the philanthropist who gave not only money but his time to the causes that spoke to his heart. He will be remembered as a Vanderbilt and while some of his family may wish that he be laid to rest with the rest of his family, his preference will be to be laid in his personal family plot. Many will attend his funeral, some friends, some family, some acquaintances, and maybe even some enemies. Kind words will be spoken, and while he won't quickly be forgotten it won't be too long before his name is linked to nothing more than his grand kids and the school he founded.

Mun Impressions

Marc has put me through a lot over the years and I'm actually very excited to be bringing him to Brook Haven. He's got good intentions for the the program, big dreams, and I look forward to seeing him repair his relationship with his siblings as he makes a life for himself about as far away from his family and the high society social events that he's been forced to partake in over the years. None of the dinner parties or philanthropic events where people throw around more money than many in the country have seen in years has ever been his real place, and I love him for that.

Habits

Stress Tinkering

When Marc gets stressed, he tinkers with things. In times of trouble, it's not uncommon to find him in his office taking something apart and putting it back together. Sometimes this can transfer to cars as well.

Smells Books

Marc loves the way books smell, whether they're new or old, he loves it all! Whenever he gets a new book, he opens it up and smells it!

Refuses to walk barefoot indoors

Marc refuses to walk barefoot indoors. He doesn't like it, and as a result, he always has something on his feet, whether they are shoes, slippers, or sandals. This is something that got warped when he was a kid, and as a result he will not walk around his own home barefoot.

Takes daily photos

This is a daily ritual that he started when he gained custody of Fae and has continued since. He takes at least one photo of his niece a day. She isn't always aware that he's doing it, but she's pretty used to it by now. It's so he has something to show Rachel when that time comes.

Quirks

Very small handwriting

Marc has really small handwriting. It's always legible but very small. He's aware of this, so when he writes something that others will be reading, he makes an effort to write larger, sometimes he over compensates.

Pescetarian

Yup! You read that right! Marc doesn't eat meat, but he does eat fish and seafood. Pretty straight forward there.

Extremely religious

He's not extremely religious in the "jam it down your throat" sort of a way, but he is in that he's at church every Sunday, dressed for the occasion with his listening ears on and with his niece in tow. He thinks it's important to have something to believe in.

Hobbies

Billiards

Marc played on the billiards team in college. It's a pass-time he's enjoyed since he was a teenager and while he doesn't play it as much as he might like, but he plays often enough. He has a table in his home, but he'd love to find some friends to play with.

Collecting Art

Marc loves to collect art of various styles. He loves to look at beautiful things and being able to put them on show in his home brings him quite a bit of happiness. While this is not a cheap hobby, it is one that he enjoys as he attempts to locate both local and distant artist's work.

Working Out

Marc loves to work out. It's not something that he does 24/7, as he has a life and a job, but he does work out at least once a day, five days a week. He has a home gym, which helps to facilitate this habit.

Skills

Managing People • excellent

Marc is wonderful at managing people, dealing with problems, and delegating tasks. He has an open door policy with the people he works with, or who work for him, and he's really great when put in charge of something, as he'll make sure that it's done as quickly and efficiently as possible, while still being done right. He's a consistent person, which makes dealing with others easier.

teaching • excellent

Marc is a wonderful teacher. He usually teaches teenagers, but he can work with any age, if necessary -- his calling just to work with adolescents. He loves that moment when it really clicks into place for them, and he's willing to be both patient and persistent to see to it that moment happens. He consistent and stable, which means those he works with knows exactly what to expect from him, because while his expectations are high, they aren't unreasonable.

event planning • good

Side effect of growing up in the world of elegant parties and events is that you learn how to host one. Marc doesn't like leaving things to chance, and so he's become quite skilled at coordinating and planning events, usually philanthropic "old people" parties.

ballroom dancing •excellent

Ballroom dancing was something his grandmother insisted he learn, and while he might have thought as a teenager that it didn't have it's place, it does, especially now that he's older. It's nice to be able to take a woman out dancing and wow her.

Interests

Clocks

Marc loves clocks. There's something about the consistency with time that really gets to him. He loves how beautiful they can be, and this is actually one of those things that he collects. He always has a watch on him, and while he'd love to learn how to make them, it's never really been his calling.

pottery

Marc has an interest in pottery, both collecting and making. He's not particularly talented, which is why he wants to learn more about techniques.

foster kids/system

This one really has captured his heart. Kids who go through the foster system often have a pretty rough time of it, and Marc is dedicated to learning more about and doing more for this cause. As far as he's concerned, foster kids deserve the same opportunities as any other, and they face quite a bit of discrimination which makes life more difficult.

Desired Plots

Did it matter?

Marc isn't only a financier for the ranch, he also volunteers his time on the ranch, which means that there will be time he's helping out with whatever needs to be done -- even ranch hand work. I'd think it would be interesting to have a thread in which one of the students try to talk down to him because he's "just a hand". I think this could make for an interesting plot in which he puts them back into their place of "child", because while he's not just a ranch hand, a ranch hand deserves just as much respect as a CEO. You never really know who you're talking to, and it's why you treat everyone with the same kindness and courtesy -- until they give you a reason not to.

Fundraiser

Marc would really like to host a dinner and dance event at the end of the summer for the students at the ranch. He thinks it would be a lot of fun, and he thinks that with the right additional supporters at the event, he might be able to raise additional funds for the ranch.

The dance would include dresses for the girls, tux's for the boys along with appropriate shoes, make-up, and even some hairdressers coming to the ranch to do the girls' hair. While this isn't the best idea of "fun" he thinks it could be a good experience for the kids, and good exposure for the ranch.

That's not why I'm here

While it's true that Marc did buy a ranch, and might be interested in acquiring more land, it isn't for developing (as rumors might suggest). It would be fun if someone tried to call him out on it and he was honest and up front with them about his reasons for looking into acquiring more land: building a private school.

Rachel came to Brook Haven on a referral from her brother. She served eighteen months in juvenile detention and upon her release, her parents relinquished their parental rights to her entirely. Her life looks like one bad decision that influenced the everything, but the truth is that she's made a lot of mistakes, from having a baby at the age of twelve to holding up a liquor store when she was barely fifteen. At the end of the day, what she wanted the most was her parents' attention, and they were never capable of giving her that.

The ranch only knows part of the truth about Rachel; That she was arrested for holding up a liquor store, that she was difficult in juvy, that she was prone to fights with other inmates, that she was difficult to control (or just plain "difficult"). Her parents and the authorities never revealed the truth of her pregnancy or the child she was forced to give up for adoption, the circumstances of her family or the fact that her parents didn't treat her very well.

She's come to Brook Haven Ranch with no hope or expectations of something good coming of her experience with juvenile detention. Her natural reaction is to buck the system and to fight back, but Rachel is exhausted by her experiences and all she wants is a better life for herself.

A tried and true "horse girl," this is exactly the right place for Rachel, who has missed being around horses while she was in juvy. Their presence has surprised her, and they've given her an outlet for a lot of what's going on inside of her (because despite it all, she's less angry and more hurt than most people seem to realize).

Rachel & Marc
We have talked this to death. There isn't much that I can say about the first two or three threads between them that we have not already talked about. It's not going to be hard to get something going, so I will just add a starter to my list of threads and get to it soon. I figured that somebody would call Rachel into the office and she'd see him there. Yeeee! So excited! And nervous!

A single father of five (three biological and two adopted) children, Christopher left his job in Memphis (at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital) to move to Montana because he believed that it was what was best for his children. His wife died roughly a year ago, and without her Chris found that he no longer had what he needed to make it as a pediatric oncologist. It was difficult to come home and find her gone, a victim of the disease that he had studied for most of his life, and a family trip to a dude ranch changed his life, perhaps forever. He's a good father to his children, but the move has helped him to get to know them better. They've surprised him, and he's surprised himself, in finding that he doesn't parent his biological children the same way that he parents his adoptive children. Cancer has been a huge theme in Chris's life. His brother Alex had cancer as a teenager, he became an oncologist because of Alex, he adopted Joey and Kristen after treating Joey's leukemia, and then his wife, Andie, died of cancer. It's a hard thing for Chris to get away from, and he does tend to worry more about the people that he cares about as a result of having surrounded himself his entire life with sickness in one form or another. He's aware of the way that people feel, and takes time out to make sure that everybody in his life is well. Most of all, Chris is a family man. He loves his children, and his parents and siblings as well. He's spent a lifetime learning how to be the best father that he can be to his children, the best son and brother. Family time is important to him and he puts his family before all else. It hasn't always been this way, but he feels that he needs to prove to his adoptive children that he's not going to vanish on them the way that their mother did. Thanks to parenting adopted kids, he understands better what a lot of the kids on the ranch are going through, and he tries to bring that into play in how he takes care of the kids in his group on the ranch.

Chris & Marc
So I know that we talked about these two, but we haven't set much in stone for the two of them. It occurred to me a moment ago that of course Chris is also one of Rachel's counselors, which means that she's going to have some reason to talk to Marc about Rachel. I feel like it could be a little bit awkward because otherwise the two of them will get along very well, I think. The main thing is that Chris is defensive and protective of "his" kids, and Rachel technically belongs to Marc. So anyway, I do see them as probable friends, but am not ready to do a thread with them until I've given Rachel her chance with Marc. After that, I'd be totally up for them to hang! Oh! And I meant to mention that Chris never drinks, and since Marc is often drinking, this could be an interesting point betweent hem!

So we talked about the clock thing (Marc buying one/some of Liam's clocks) but I was also thinking that with Marc getting into ranching, they would probably have some sort of interaction in town about this?

Karl would be happy to call Marc on the rumors about him buying the ranch for development. I could also see Karl writing a passive-aggressive letter to the town paper about rich out-of-town developers who don't understand the Trader's Bend way of life coming in to develop ranches, without mentioning Marc by name. Of course, Karl would change his tune if he found out it was for a school, though he'd have plenty of opinions about what a private school in town would be like.

When people look at Nick, they tend to see a big dumb bully. For all most people experience of him, they might as well be right. At heart, Nick is a smart, sensitive kid who’s learned to act tough because it keeps him safe, but that’s buried deep enough that plenty of people will never encounter that side of him.

This is a bit of the opposite of one of the desired plots. Nick, for all his flaws, doesn't think he's better than the ranch hands. He's not nicer to them than he is to anyone else, but he's not going to talk down to Marc if he thinks Marc's a ranch hand. But he'd be pretty blown away to realize that this guy working the ranch is actually rich (and also Rachel's brother, since he does know Rachel), because he definitely thinks that, if he were rich, he'd never want to do something like that.

Nolan's been in foster care since he was two. He excelled at academics, and spent most of his childhood keeping apart from the other foster kids, believing that his intelligence made him special. When he hit his teens, that began falling apart as the competition to be the best student around intensified. His escalating emotions led him to brandish a knife at a foster parent, which got him sent to a group home. Teachers who worried about his performance recommended him to Brook haven.

I just want to mention that if Marc's fancy fundraiser happens (is that the event that's part of Halloween?) Nolan is actually going to really enjoy it - it's a piece of a world he's never had access to, but always envied, and it'll be pretty meaningful for him to participate. I don't know if that leads to a thread, but I at least wanted to point that out.
