Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

Nearly two years ago, the barn that housed Bella's five horses burned to the ground. The fire was set by carelessness during one of her twin sister Ronnie's wild drinking parties. Ronnie has always kept the wrong sort of friends while Bella stayed in her hole and wrote in her journal or drew in her notebooks. While both girls were equally abused by their stepfather, they responded differently to the abuse.

And they responded differently to the fire as well. Two of Ronnie's horses made it out of the fire, but none of Bella's did, and though Ronnie's horses have since been sold by their stepfather as retribution for what she did (and because Ronnie refused to interact with them after the fire), Bella suffers the loss of her animals acutely. She saw them die, and she cannot imagine anything worse than that.

Half of Bella's body -- as is Ronnie's -- is covered with burn scars acquired when she struggled to pull her horses out of the blaze. The scars have made Bella self-conscious to the point of aggression. She won't allow people to get close to her and sometimes refuses to participate in group activities as a result of the scars.

It's making a lot of trouble for the people on the ranch, and the fact that Bella's been put into the group that her brother leads hasn't made things any easier on her. Nate's been strict and demanding with her, with high expectations of excellence when all she wants is to lay in bed all day.

The last thing that she wants is to bond with another horse. It's too difficult when she loses them. But the ranch has given her a "special" horse, a damaged thoroughbred that some have said only a real horse whisperer can handle. Will a broken girl be able to heal a broken horse?

Heroes and Heartbreak

Ronnie was going to come out of this a hero, just because she's been in the hospital for two weeks already, on a ventilator, barely keeping herself alive. Someone had suggested that it was the machines that kept her breathing, but Bella knew better: If that was true it was only true because Ronnie didn't want to wake up from her coma. She probably didn't want to face her twin sister's devastation, her rage, her fury that she'd spent two weeks of her own in hospital while her family gathered at Ronnie's bedside and nobody informed their real father of where they were or what had happened.

Bella twisted and shifted her legs off the bed so that her feet fell to the floor. The draft had made it cold, and she shivered, green eyes scanning the space of her hospital room. Someone had packed her bags while she was asleep, doped up on pain killers that made her brain foggy. She wondered absently if they were also meant to make her forget. Or were those the anti-depressants they'd put her on? It was hard to say for sure what the doctors and nurses thought of her. If they thought as her family did -- that she was making drama and being selfish about her sister's condition -- they didn't show it. In fact, most of the nurses had been sympathetic to the way that she felt about what had happened to her.

To her horses.

The tears came so hard and fast that she couldn't stop them. They filled her throat and made swallowing difficult. For a moment she couldn't breathe, and the fingers of her right hand, unaffected by the burns that covered the left side of her body, twisted in the sheets of her hospital bed. Burns would heal, or so she'd been told, but she might always walk with a bit of a limp, might always have trouble using the left arm. Burns near the joints affected tendons, and she'd been covered from the knee all the way up her left side.

She reached up to touch the side of her face with her fingers, though she still lacked sensation both in the fingers and in the face. Her hair had been shaven away on that side, and though it would grow back in time, she would always feel its loss.

This was Ronnie's doing. Ronnie was the one who had invited her friends over while their parents -- their mother and stepfather -- were away for the weekend. She was the one who had invited them out to the barn for some beer and liquor. She was the one whose friends had lit a cigarette too near the hay. She was the one whose buddies had set the barn on fire. She was the reason that the horses were dead.

A weight sank down around Bella's shoulders and she pushed up off the bed just as her brother -- the younger of the two older brothers she and Ronnie had -- stepped into the room to reach for her bags. "You ready to go?" he asked her. Bella shrugged wordlessly and followed him out of the room. It would be a while before she spoke to anyone in her family again. Nathaniel had sold the remaining horses, not that any of them had been hers to begin with. It didn't matter: She had no intention of ever riding again.

How could she ride when at night her dreams were filled with the screams of her friends, the horses as they perished in the fire? How could she ever ride again when she couldn't trust her twin sister, her best friend in the world outside of her horses, to kill the animals again? How could she ride again when her stepfather wanted her grounded for the rest of all eternity, probably just so that he could get his filthy hands on her.

A shiver went down her spine as she followed Jarrod out to the car where she would ride back to her house. He'd babysit her until Ronnie got out of the hospital, and Bella wouldn't visit. In fact, it would be years before she spoke a word to her sister again.

Ronnie, the hero.

Womb to Tomb

In spite of everything, Bella loves her twin sister Ronnie. Ronnie's the one responsible for the fire that cost Bella all five of her horses, and though her vision is clouded with hot red hatred for the moment, the two sisters have been together since the womb and they will likely be together on the day that they die as well. It's been a year and a half, however, and Bella has been unable to forgive Ronnie for what she took from her.

On the other side of that, Bella nearly lost Ronnie, who was in a coma for nearly a month following the fire. Nerve damage and smoke inhalation caused by going back into the fire to attempt to rescue the horses did more damage to Ronnie than it did to Bella and though physical therapy has helped her sister to regain her range of motion, Bella still remembers those weeks her sister was in the hospital and the guilt of not wanting to be there with Ronnie while she was unconscious. It was too painful to think that she might lose her sister, and since then Bella has been very distant from Ronnie, not wanting to get close for fear of losing something again.

The two sisters will have to come to terms with what Ronnie did, with the loss of their horses, and with the scars that cover both of their bodies. Each carries her own separate guilt and they will need to learn to deal with this so that they can restore their relationship with one another.

Daddy Dearest

Off and on during her marriage to Nathaniel, Bella's mother Lorraine slept with another man: Callum Faulkner. Bella doesn't know a lot about her natural father, only that he is the father of all of her mother's children and that Nathaniel didn't sire any of them, which is the reason that he hated them so much, and the reason that he was able to touch her and Bella the way that he did while claiming that it "wasn't incest" and that it was okay for him to do that to the girls.

Bella knows that her father exists, but all she knows about him is that he's one hell of a playboy and that she has upwards of twenty siblings throughout the world. Now some of those siblings are converging on Trader's Bend, and Bella is not only going to have to learn how to cope with her sister and their older full brother Nate, but how to deal with her natural father and her half-siblings as well. Cal's not only in Trader's Bend, he's working with the kids at Brook Haven ranch as a pharmaceutical prescriber (psychiatrist).

She's longed for her entire life to know her father as her father but now that he's in her life, Bella doesn't trust him. Not only is he pushing horses on her when she doesn't want anything to do with them, but he's trying to be the parent that he wasn't for all those years during which she and Ronnie were suffering at the hands of their mother's husband (who she doesn't like to give the title of "father" to at all).

"Just Say 'No'"

Since the fire, Bella has been full of the word "no." It's her response to nearly everything that her mother has offered her to "make up for" the things that her sister and stepfather have done to her. She's been obstinate to the point that it's damaging her relationships with her brothers, and she refuses to do the things that other teenagers are expected to do -- including go to school. Truancy officers have been out to her house four times to question the reasons that she's not in school and the family came very close to a CPS investigation that her stepfather barely thwarted because when Bella is forced to attend, she finds ways to get out of classes.

This is a big problem, particularly where horses are concerned. Though Nathaniel sold the remainder of Ronnie's horses and served up her pet cows for dinner, Lorraine has attempted to ply Bella with horses that she ignored until they had to be sold. She refuses to get on a horse, to ride, or to interact with a horse, and now that she's on Brook Haven Ranch -- and in the Wranglers group no less! -- she doesn't have the option of ignoring a horse any more.

There's going to be some drama when it comes to her horse. Logan Brook has given her a challenging horse (on purpose of course) in a failed racehorse (thoroughbred) with a big temper and a hot personality. He's entrusted her with a horse that most kids on the ranch wouldn't be able to handle and is encouraging her to ride in a style that's less familiar to her. How she takes that challenge is going to be an interesting story to see.

About Bella

Bella is a fifteen-year-old lifelong equestrian who rides both English and Western saddles, as well as having learned to ride sidesaddle when she was about nine years old. In spite of recent circumstances, she is horse obsessed and she loves the animals. She's so horse obsessed that at one point she risked her own life in an attempt to save her horses from a fire that her sister's friends set during a party when they were thirteen -- terribly young to be in the barn drinking and smoking, if you think about it.

Because she ran into the fire to try to save her horses, half of Bella's body is covered in burn scars, from just above her left knee to the space right in front of her left ear. She wears her hair over her face to hide the scarring there, but if and when she gets on a horse again it will be visible either because she's forced to wear a helmet as per barn rules or because she puts her hair up in a tail so that she can work in the barn without being encumbered. It's something that embarrasses her, but not so much that she's going to put herself at risk and long hair in the barn can be a problem.

Bella's an introvert, which in her case means that she doesn't want to have to be around a lot of people at any given point in time. Large groups of people make her uncomfortable and when she's around a lot of people she feels judged. The ranch is going to be threatening to her for this reason, and that sense of being threatened is never going to go away, no matter how long she's on the ranch. That's something that people wanting to get to know her are going to have to take into consideration when dealing with Bella: It's not that she doesn't like people, it's that she's fearful that people don't like her. This might abate with a lot of time, but she's always going to be somewhat shy around people in spite of her Leo zodiac.

If Bella is pushed to interact, or if someone is pushing her to ride or interact with her horse before she has met him, she's going to snap, hard. While she's normally quite soft spoken and not aggressive, being pushed to do something she doesn't want to do is going to result in a hellion of a girl who will push you so hard that you don't know what hit you. Push hard enough and she will snap out with physical aggression, something that her brother Nate is trying to curb, but not always in the most appropriate ways -- he was named for, and raised by, their stepfather as well.

Platonic

The odds of Bella having a lot of friends are pretty high, if she can find the right kinds of friends. She's introverted and worried about being judged, but like most humans, she does enjoy human companionship. It's hard for her to be alone all the time and she'd love to have a small handful of very close friends to whom she can relate and who she can trust not to judge her.

It's important -- not just for now but pretty much for forever -- that she and Ronnie have separate circles of friends. The two girls are very different from one another as a result of favoritism on their brothers' parts, and while Ronnie is somewhat more outgoing, Bella is more private and withdrawn. The likelihood that they will share friends is low, so if Bella becomes friends with someone, that person is unlikely to become attached to Ronnie. Beside which, it will be awkward to be friends with Bella, who blames her sister for the fire that killed her horses, and with Ronnie, who is responsible for the fire that killed Bella's horses (for real, that's not Bella's imagination!).

The best friends for Bella are going to be those people who won't push her, who don't talk too much, and who have fairly good attitudes toward life. Bella's a pessimist by nature, but that's mostly because of so many bad things happening to her in the past couple of years. Friends who can pick her up and encourage her to get out of her shell will be the best for her, particularly if they can do it without pushing her to do things that she doesn't want to do.

As for what Bella offers as a friend, she is intensely loyal unless you do something that hurts her -- badly. She and Ronnie were best friends until Ronnie killed her horses, and even now Bella and Ronnie are going to get their relationship figured out, so that says how loyal she can be. She's a good shoulder to cry on, a good listener, and is incredibly practical, making her good about giving advice. Bella's on time for virtually everything, highly organized, and a great planner. Though she doesn't like to admit it and she's not much of a dreamer, she's also creative, so friends who enjoy creative pursuits will also be good.

Romantic

Bella's never been all that into romance, though her sex drive is perfectly intact, thank you very much. She's bisexual, by a small margin more interested in girls than she is in boys, and remarkably currently involved with a boy -- Owen Dorsey (something that took even their mun by surprise). Romance is, in her opinion, a dream, a fantasy, and people don't actually get to have that sort of love affair in their life, so why should she go out and pursue it? Her mother's great love was quite obviously Cal Faulkner, and yet she married Nathaniel for practical purposes. Best Bella can tell, Cal isn't even all that interested in her mother except to use her for sex, and that's something that Bella has taken from her parents' relationship with one another (even though she has yet to meet her father [but will soon]).

For the most part, romance is repugnant to Bella, and she's not looking for that in her life right now. If she meets the right girl, she could potentially wind up pursuing her sexually, in spite of her (good!) relationship with Owen, who treats her well and who she wants to love (but doesn't really know how, thanks to her mother and stepfather's disaster of a marriage).

In short, she's not looking for romance right now, and will likely reject it if it comes along. She's happy with Owen, though she's not sure that she would say that she's in love with him or that she ever will be in love with him.

Antagonistic

No doubt Bella is going to have plenty of enemies to go along with her plenty of friends. Not only will Ronnie's friends likely dislike her for the fact that she blames her twin for what happened to her horses, but she's likely to develop hostile relationships with anyone who tries to tell her what she ought to be doing. Since the kids in this environment are encouraged to use peer pressure to get the best out of their peers, even those who might be seeking friendship could wind up in a situation where the relationship is hostile or antagonistic, because Bella won't respond well to being pushed into something like mucking out stalls or doing any horse-related chores, for that matter.

Other enemies of course may include anyone who judges her based on her scars or her relationship with the horses. There's very little question that there will be those who look on her scars and call her ugly, especially considering those that extend to her face, and she's not going to tolerate that all that well. If she's confronted and judged, Bella will probably walk away, but if you're one of the pushy types, she might wind up lashing out either verbally or physically. If you don't want a fight, don't push her into doing something she's not comfortable with.

Familiar

Bella's family relationships are disappointing and complicated. She has spent her life living with her mother and stepfather (neither of whom is in play), has never met her father (coming into play soon), and has had her two older brothers and her twin sister in her life since birth. The family is mostly divided. Nathaniel, the stepfather, hates all of the children equally. Lorraine, the mother, has failed to protect all four children. Nate, the oldest brother, has often sided with Ronnie in arguments and has continued to do so since she was hospitalized following the incident with the fire in which she was burned and experienced smoke inhalation. Nate has always been hard on Bella, who has a closer relationship with middle brother Jarrod (not in play).

Now that Cal is coming into play, and Bella is meeting him for the first time, he is on Bella's side in the feud between the twins, resulting in the two girls having opposite sides in a battle that is now causing some strife between Nate and Cal (who had a pre-existing relationship with one another as father and son).

Bella doesn't trust her family at all to take care of her best interests, and she is rejecting Cal at the outset, though this is a relationship that we're working on improving, so there will be some stories and plots going into this. Since Cal and Ronnie are played by Ava and Bella and Nate by me, there's not much room to get involved in this unless somebody wants to play Lorraine or Nathaniel, who are presently still in Napa County (California).

Other

Bella is going to be a problem for the people who run the ranch if only because she is so stubborn. it's going to take a lot of work to get her onto the back of a horse again, and probably even more work than that just to get her to interact with the horse in the first place. She skips classes, she breaks rules, she doesn't care what other people think of her behavior (okay, not really, of course she cares), she's withdrawn and distant, she won't talk during therapy or group, and she's insistent on spending as much time by herself as she possibly can.

It would, needless to say, be wonderful for her to find somebody on the ranch who can relate to her and who cares about her not because she's family, and not because she's Ronnie's sister, but because she's Bella. Someone who sees her pain for what it is, who can work their way past the blustering bravado and reach the inner person would be just wonderful for Bella to have.

First Impressions

The first thing that most people think when they see Bella is "what happened to her?" The scars are visible unless she's very careful, and since they do come up to her face, there's no avoiding the fact that Bella's been in a fire and that it's affected her. Most people take from there that she is shy and that she doesn't speak a lot. Unless you are unfortunate enough to meet her when she is feeling like she's been confronted, you'll probably leave a first meeting with Bella under the impression that she's extremely shy and doesn't like to talk to people much. Maybe she's self conscious about the scars?

Stranger Impressions

If you were getting to know Bella based purely on her application to Brook Haven (the one that her brother submitted for her), the impression that you'd have of her is that she is stubborn and bull-headed and that she's too busy blaming other people for her problems to work on solving them herself. Of course it depends some on who wrote the information down, since there are various different impressions of Bella in her family alone, but for the most part strangers who know her only through her Brook Haven application or through local news stories will probably see her as ridiculous, uncaring, and maybe a bit of a brat.

Friendly Impressions

Friends who are getting to know Bella and who like her will most likely see a person who is deliberately lonely in that she doesn't have a lot of people to hang around with her and she keeps herself isolated in order to protect herself. This is the point at which people are most apt to see the fact that she is genuinely hurt and struggling with the turn of events that her life has taken. The closer that people get the more that they will also see the ways that her relationship with her mother and stepfather have damaged her psyche and the fact that she doesn't want to get hurt again by people who are close to her, so she blocks herself off.

Familiar Impressions

Most of Bella's family sees her as a stubborn, willful and spoiled brat who has made her own choices and refuses to see the fact that her choices are hurting them. The majority of the people in her family are either a little bit (or a lot) selfish or they are invested in helping Ronnie to heal physically from the fire that took the lives of the family's horses. They aren't looking at Bella specifically or closely enough, which has resulted in some seriously broken relationships between her and the other members of her family. She's struggling most with Ronnie and Nate (who is inconveniently the Wrangler's Leader).

Rival Impressions

Bella's not particularly competitive at the moment, so she doesn't have a lot of rivals. When it comes to her riding (when she's back on the horse, at least), her rivals will likely find her indifferent to them. She doesn't care about beating them so much as she cares about beating her own times and scores, which means that she can safely ignore them. At the same time, she's not invested in helping them to improve the way that some equestrians are, so there's not much to say for rivals and their impressions of Bella, other than the fact that they may see her as a snob who doesn't care much about other people.

Enemy Impressions

Enemies will find Bella aggressive to the point of being mean. She'll tell you that it's because she's blunt with everybody and that her enemies are just the ones who take it personally, but that's not altogether the truth. She is aggressive with the people she doesn't like, however, and she's known for causing scenes with people who get in her way or who cause her trouble. Her goal of course is to make them look bad, but most of the time she winds up making herself look worse than her enemies, further cementing the relationship status between them and her as one that is hostile.

Authority Impressions

As with many others, Authorities will find that Bella is a difficult person to work with. She doesn't follow rules readily, doesn't respond to most punishments, and she is stubborn about her willingness to adjust to new environments and activities. It's a simple fact that she doesn't like authority, but it doesn't show that she's afraid of authority figures and that therefore her fight or flight kicks in, making her either fight aggressively toward authorities or to run away from them by hiding herself in her cabin or in the commons.

Coworker/Partner Impressions

People having to work with Bella will find that she is stubborn and that she doesn't tend to carry her own load. Peer pressure doesn't seem to work on her, leaving her groupmates angry with her and wanting those in authority to push her into doing what she's supposed to do. Because this is often turned around on the group, she is not well liked by those in her group because of her being such a difficult person. Group mates likely find her unpleasant and not the type of person they want to be friendly with -- unless they get to know her better, and start to understand what she's really been through.

Lover Impressions

A good lover (and Owen is one) will see Bella's pain first. In this kind of relationship it's hard not to see the person who Bella really is. Lovers will see a girl who is wounded, who was terribly abused, and who is coping with more than most people should have to cope with during their lifetimes. These people will see the softer, more broken side of Bella, and the people in this category are the most likely to know her really well. Friends could reach this point as well if they're careful to be gentle with her and give her some room to make her own decisions about how she wants to go with her life.

Self-Impressions

Bella hates herself. She believes that she has deserved everything that's happened to her, as that's what her step-father has said to her over and over throughout the years that he's spent parenting her and Ronnie. It's been a traumatic history for her, and she doesn't believe that she's worthy of much of anything. When she looks at herself, she sees somebody who has done nothing but make mistakes, and who is so bad that even her biological father didn't want her and her mother was too busy finding romance to be interested in a relationship with her daughter(s).

Post-Mortem Impressions

When people look back on Bella's life, there is going to be some pity for her. By the time that she's gone, no doubt they will be able to see the hard things that she had to put up with and will understand that she didn't have an easy life to live. They'll see the wounded girl who was just trying to make do without the coping tools that she needed in order to survive an abusive family situation. Some people are going to wish that they had contributed more to her healing process and some are going to wonder why she didn't seek help herself.

Mun Impressions

I personally have a love-hate relationship with Bella. My impression of her is that she tries too hard to outdo her sister, even though she's in some ways stronger than Ronnie -- really in a lot of ways. As I work on this character through the years, developing her (originally for Brook Haven, actually), I find that the muse wants equal footing with her twin sister so that both of their stories are equal to one another. IMO this makes Bella one heck of a drama queen and I'm getting tired of battling her on things like hobbies when what she really wants is to be noticed. Hopefully her desperate need for attention can be met this time around.

Habits

Planning/Journaling

In spite of her depression, Bella is an obsessive planner. She uses the BuJo method of journaling, keeping track of everything from her school schedule to her riding schedule to her appointments with her therapist. Even if she doesn't attend all of these appointments, she's careful to track those, her moods, her diet, and so on. This may be part of the reason for her bulimia, however, as tracking her food has led to obsessions in the eating department, which are obviously unhealthy.

Binging and Purging

It's odd that Bella can't decide if this is something she's proud of -- or not. She has an unhealthy relationship with food, an obsession with eating as much as she can when she can get it (in part due to her stepfather limiting the access that she had to food and then calling her fat), but also with maintaining a "healthy" weight. She often overeats and then purges later on in the bathroom, and this is something that those close to her don't know yet.

Making Excuses

Most of the time Bella will do just about anything to get out of having to get involved with people, which includes having to go to classes (both academic and equestrian) and so she has a long list of excuses that she uses to explain why she's not going to do such and such just because she was told to. Sometimes she's too busy doing her hair, and other times she had a school project that didn't exist that she has to do. Either way Bella is full of excuses.

Quirks

Hair in Face

Unless it is for any reason dangerous for her to have her hair down, Bella nearly always wears her hair down in her face to cover up the scar that runs up the left side of her face in front of (and behind) her left ear. This is to prevent people from seeing the scars on her face, since she sees herself as being a relatively pretty person -- before the scars -- and her fight side is unaffected from the fire.

Avoidance

Some bad things have happened to Bella -- namely the loss of her five horses in a barn fire caused by a party that her twin sister threw when they were thirteen. Because of this, she avoids the things that she used to enjoy, since she feels guilty that she wasn't able to get her horses out of the barn in time to save their lives. She doesn't ride any more, and it's going to take a lot of gentle enticing to get her there, rather than pushing her to do something that she doesn't want to do.

Long Sleeves

Just as her hair is always in her face, Bella almost never wears long sleeves and even when it comes time for events like the formal dances and summer swimming lessons, she won't show off her body. She'd prefer to swim in jeans than to wear a bathing suit. There are too many scars, which are a reminder of something that happened to her and which she prefers not to have to think about. More than that, she worries about people judging her body for its shape and the scars it bears.

Hobbies

Bullet Journaling

This is more a productivity technique than it is a hobby, but Bella enjoys it enough that this is something which is also a hobby for her. She's a creative journaler, meaning that her journal is filled to the brim with sketches, doodles, and all kinds of different hand-written fonts that she's worked on. The journal is about productivity for her, even if she doesn't follow through on all of her appointments, and she could use it to improve her life if she wanted to.

Reading

Bella reads everything that she can get her hands on. She loves books, and though for her it's not an artistic thing, but more a way to develop and improve herself, she reads as much for entertainment as for any other reason. One day she would like to be an author and she believes that reading as much as possible is one way to make sure that she can make that particular dream come true. Fiction, non-fiction, personal development, self-help, she reads everything she can get her hands on. Except for books about horses. Those are no longer on her shelf.

Music

Although Bella has no concerted interested in art, she does enjoy music, both listening to it and playing it. She's capable of playing both the guitar and the fiddle, and she does play both of them very well. She's creative enough to write her own songs and tunes but she doesn't have any real, deep interest in becoming more artistic than what she is right now. For her, music is largely practical, as it makes her feel complete when she plays it. Less so when just listening to it.

Skills

Horseback Riding • Exceptional

Bella is such a good rider that there's been talk of her becoming a professional, or training for the Olympics. After her horses died, however, she has stopped riding the way that she used to, and she's no longer interested in pursuing professional equestrian sports. Her mother and stepfather were never particularly supportive anyway, and now that she hasn't ridden in nearly two years, the odds of her making it to the Olympics are nearly none.

Guitar • Excellent

Bella plays guitar (and fiddle) very well. Guitar is self taught for her and she's never had a lesson in her life, so the fact that she's so good is pretty impressive all around. She won't be doing much playing on the ranch because she's not allowed to have the strings for the guitar until she has earned privileges, but this is something that she enjoys and that she's skilled enough at to impress other people, so that's something for her to be proud of!

Doodling • Capable

A lot of kids enjoy drawing and art work, but for Bella it's not a serious pursuit, just something that she does for creative reasons in her journal. She enjoys it and she's good at it, but she's definitely not an aspiring artist -- too practical for that, to be real with you. Anybody who gets a glimpse at her journal will probably be impressed with her doodles though!

Interests

Law of Attraction

Although she has never been able to put it to work for herself, Bella is fascinated by the Law of Attraction (LOA for short). She's determined that one day she's going to have the life that she's dreamed of, but she gets stuck on feeling that she is entitled because of things that have happened to her in the past, and therefore she is stuck on negativity instead of on the visualization of the things that she wants. Either way, she reads about the LoA constantly and consistently.

Harry Potter

Hermione Granger is Bella's hero. She wants to be more like Hermione and she's read the books multiple times all the way through the entire series. Generally she makes it through all seven books about once a year, both for her own pleasure and because she feels that there's something that she can learn from the book and the author's story of how she came up with the idea for the book and wrote it during a period of difficulty in her life.

LGBT Rights

Bella is decidedly bisexual, though she tends to prefer females (but is currently in a relationship with a boy!), and she has a keen interest in making sure that LGBT people in the US have the same rights as straight people do. It bothers her that people would discriminate against her for being bisexual and she is very acutely aware that this discrimination sometimes comes from within the LGBT community itself. She's not homophobic or transphobic herself at all though, and she tries to live by example.

Desired Plots

Someone Like Me

It would be fantastic for Bella to find somebody who, like her, has faced discrimination based on their sexual orientation or their gender identity. She'd be the type of friend who is loyal and quiet about things, not pushing the issue of gender and sexuality on her friend or on anybody else while defending her friend's rights to express themselves in an appropriate way. She believes that everyone should be free to be themselves and that's what she wants for all of her friends, so this could be an excellent friendship for her.

Saddle Up!

For nearly two years, Bella ha refused to look at a horse, let alone get in the saddle. Now that she's at Brook Haven, she doesn't have much of a choice in whether or not she's going to saddle up, and so now she's going to have to be forced to get back in the saddle. A relationship with someone willing to coax rather than push her would be fantastic for getting her cooperating with the program, especially considering that her brother is her group leader and he's a pusher rather than a coaxer. Once she finds out that she's been given a "special" horse, however, this will be a given.

Can't Live Without You

In spite of everything that they've been through, both together and because of one another, Bella and Ronnie love one another, and Bella wants to fix her relationship with her sister. It's going to take time between the two of them, but having an adult who is able and willing to stand for them and help them to get to know one another again, in their new bodies (scarred) and in spite of the things that have happened to them, that would be great for getting both Bella and Ronnie back on track!

When people look at Nick, they tend to see a big dumb bully. For all most people experience of him, they might as well be right. At heart, Nick is a smart, sensitive kid who’s learned to act tough because it keeps him safe, but that’s buried deep enough that plenty of people will never encounter that side of him.

Bella & Nick
Bella definitely seems like someone Nick would try to target. It’ll probably take him a few tries to really get at her weak points, but she definitely sounds like someone who he’d bother until he finds them, especially if he realizes she’ll snap if he pushes hard enough.

Nick’s admit thread is long enough that he can start other threads now; I’d definitely be happy to start a thread with him and either Bella or Rachel. Let me know if you have an idea; I could also grab Rachel’s open thread.

Bella & KaleaWell I can say that Kal isn't going to go out of her way with Bella to interact if its clear that Bella isn't receptive to talking with her. Yet, that won't rub her the wrong way or cause her to write Bella off either. She would just be patient and give her the space to either speak to her or maybe there's a situation that happens on the ranch that they get tossed together in by coincidence and one of the only ways for them to get out of that situation to talk and interact. I also don't mind if Kalea is the one to help her gain privileges. she won't be turned off by Bella helping as she doesn't know everything. She's a sponge and likes soaking up new information, so if she saw that Bella could help her with Tomboy than she may just go head and reach out to her without Bella having to offer or anything.Hit me back!

Sam & Bella
Bella is actually quite similar to what I imagined Sam’s younger sister to be like – his sister is even a 15-year-old twin that has grown more private and withdrawn in the last year or so. Sophie is also stubborn, determined, fiercely loyal until you break her trust, and prone to snapping when pushed. I think for that reason Sam would be inclined to treat Bella as he would his younger sister, especially if he saw her grow hostile when peer pressure is utilized. Now Sam had a little fallout with his younger sister after betraying her trust to their mother when she started acting out, and he pretty deeply wants to repair that relationship. I think Sam would pick up the slack on the horse-related chores that Bella avoids without being prompted to, and then sitting across from her/standing near her during the group activities while she’s part of Tenderfoot. I can see them becoming decent friends without actually knowing that much about one another, but soon becoming confidants? Or at least being ‘friends’ in that they wordlessly sit next to one another. I do also see some potential for bad – Sam has a number of self-inflicted burn marks that she could become upset by, and I think Bella could be a bad influence on him especially if she manages to pull him away from classes and has him break the rules. I also think he could voice some unprompted and unwanted words on wasting potential if he’s particularly worn down one day. I don’t see anything romantic, because he’s already made the association to his sister. As for first meetings one thing I noticed in her shipper is that she’s into music. Sam has a quirk where he plays a right-handed guitar the wrong way around.

Griffin has been in foster care since he was six-years-old, and was referred to Brook Haven by his social worker. He's dealing with a lot of issues from his past, which particularly influences how he reacts to authority figures. He is energetic and extroverted and will probably get along fine with most others -- unless he doesn't, in which case he really, really won't!

Griffin & Bella
This is an excellent plot idea, and I’m already really, really looking forward to it! You’re right in that Griffin wouldn’t be aggressive about confronting Bella about this (he wouldn’t want to, like, show someone that they could approach him with really invasive questions? So he wouldn’t do that to someone, because they might then get the impression that they could do that back to him, if that makes sense?). So like you say -- I imagine he’d probably start to slowly notice that there’s some kind of distance between Bella and Tokyo (is there any particular order/system about where exactly in the barns the horses are kept? Perhaps their paddocks are close to each other, or perhaps they just overlap on when they’re in the barns -- Griffin would be there a lot, after all!). With how interested in animals he is, he’d want to feel very close to his own horse, and would enjoy spending a lot of time with her. I already know Griffin and Echo are going to have such a close bond, and he’d put a lot of effort into maintaining that connection -- so I think it’s only natural that he’d notice something like there being a bit of distance between Bella and Tokyo! I can’t imagine Griffin being very verbally confrontational about it, at first? He’d probably skirt around the topic a bit, and maybe just try and get Bella and Tokyo to do something with him and Echo! Like just demanding they go riding together, or let their horses roam around a fenced-off field together (are there places like that on the ranch?), or heck -- even just getting her to vaguely talk about her horse in some way (“What treats are you giving her? Echo found a pumpkin near the stables after all the Halloween stuff going on -- and now I can’t get her to eat any other treat, whatsoever.”)
