Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

Sweet natured and giving, Rebekah Brook is a friendly face around the ranch. She worked the program as a teenager, and met Simon Brook when she was in college. They married and returned home, only for her to discover that he was, in fact, one of Brooks who owned the ranch where she had spent her adolescence. It wasn't amusing at first, but as time went on, it became a personal inside joke, and Bekah became a friendly face around the ranch, someone who understood the kids better than most -- including her husband -- and who would bend over backward to make the newcomers as comfortable as she could.

Bekah is generally considered to be one of the most approachable adults on the ranch. She is considerate, kind, and compassionate, and she tends to see the students for the people they are beneath their troubles. Of all the adults on the ranch, she's the last one to judge one of the students based on their troubles. After all, she's had her fair share of struggles as well.

She's currently pregnant, which limits her activities quiet a bit, but Bekah still does her best to keep up with the kids on the ranch and to help them as much as she can. Adjustment is a process as far as she's concerned, and most kids settle down once they have the opportunity to know that somebody on the ranch actually cares for them.

A very hands-on adult, Bekah goes out of her way to spend time with the kids in a personal setting, and she reaches out to them individually, particularly when they're struggling. Even on her toughest days, she eats with the kids, checks in on them in their dorms, and provides room for them to communicate with her. If they can't or don't want to communicate, she's more than happy to just hold space for them.

Living the Dream

Some girls dream of a childhood like the one that Rebekah Monroe was blessed to have. Her father worked hard so that her mother could stay home to raise her, there were pancakes every Saturday morning, dance classes on Thursday evenings, and the family went to church together as a family every Sunday, then went out to Cracker Barrel for lunch. It was everything that many children dream of, and it was an idyllic childhood. Unlike some, nothing lurked behind closed doors: Her parents were good to her, fair when meting out discipline, and always had arms to hold her when she was sad or angry. Her mother taught her how to identify and work through her feelings, and she always had a smile on her face.

Even when the cancer came, Lenore Monroe went right on smiling. Bekah was seven, and she didn't know that her mother was sick. Lenore went to her doctor's appointments while her daughter was in school, kept the smile on her face, and made a game out of wearing a head wrap when she had to shave her hair off when the time for chemotherapy came. Excited, Rebekah asked her mother to shave off her hair as well, and so they did it, at the risk of the second-grader being kicked out of school for her "unusual" hair cut.

Lenore died on a Saturday in the June of Rebekah's ninth year. It was sudden and unexpected for eight-year-old Bekah, who grieved the loss of her mother with such sincere agony that it seemed at first that she would never be whole again. Her father was as present as he had ever been, holding her through the nights that she woke up screaming from her bed and picking her up from school on the days she couldn't cope with the regular lessons. He was a good father, but all things must come to an end, and his own mourning period had a time limit on it. Frank had to get back to work or risk losing his ability to support himself and his young daughter.

He did it well, and things returned to a new normal. They still had pancakes for breakfast on Saturdays, but a friend's mother had to take Bekah to her dance lessons. Little changed but for the presence of her mother in her life, and yet Bekah felt her loss so acutely that she continued to have nightmares well into her thirteenth year, when her father finally decided that it was time to take her to see someone who might be able to help her to get some sleep. It was an act born out of love, but it was born in part because of the recommendation of a woman he had been dating consistently for four months before it happened.

Bekah fought the edict. She didn't need to see someone who could help her with the nightmares. Nobody could bring her mother back, and she felt that she ought to feel the pain of her death, lest doing anything else would erase her memory from her mind. Frank forced her to go, pushing her to attend and participate in the therapy sessions, and maintaining his insistence that she take her medication every night to help her to sleep through and make it to school the next day. Frustrated, Bekah began to skip classes, and as she moved from middle school into high school, Frank married Tina.

Tina insisted that something had to be done about her step daughter. She insisted that she loved Bekah, but Bekah could not accept her as a mother following her own mother's death. The blended family began to fight, and Frank slowly but surely started to take Tina's side in the arguments. Bekah, who had been skipping school already, withdrew completely and began to terrorize the town where they lived. After her third arrest for shoplifting, Frank passed down a new edict: She was going to attend school in Montana at a ranch for kids in trouble, and she couldn't come home until she'd gotten herself out of trouble.

Bekah never went home. It took her nearly two years to earn the privilege of seeing her father on visitor's days, and by the time that moment came, she no longer wanted to see him. He'd abandoned her, in her own mind, and she still grieved the loss of her mother acutely. A year later, when her healing process was finally under way, her father no longer wanted to see her. If he had, he would have seen an entirely different Rebekah.

By the time that she graduated from high school and went off to college, Bekah had found her magic. She rode Midnight Madness (Maddie) in Barrel Racing, and the bond with the horse had turned her into a die-hard country girl with a new lease on life. When she discovered that she could remember her mother without thinking about her constantly, her life opened up. She took responsibility for her behavior and her own problems, and gradually began to solve them. She learned to listen more than she spoke, and her heart began to heal.

While she was at college, Bekah met an older man named Simon Brook. She thought it unusual that he shared the same last name as the family who ran the ranch, but she gave it no more consideration than that. He was visiting Orlando during a summer when she worked as a Disney Princess (Belle) and they fell in love. They were married in Orlando, and then Simon took her home -- to Brook Haven Ranch.

She only found out after she'd married him that she'd married into the family that had saved her life. Thanks to her experience on the ranch, she already had a close relationship with the other leaders of the ranch, though some people raised a brow at Simon marrying a student. Their life together has been surprisingly wonderful, and Rebekah has always seen the best in Simon, even when he's around the people who bring out his worse.

Lost Girl Come Home

Though not particularly a current plot, Rebekah is a former Brook Haven Student who went away to college, While away, she met Simon and made no connection between his being one of the ranch's owners and her having been a student at the ranch. They were married before he brought her -- to her surprise -- back to his home in Trader's Bend, and they moved onto the ranch shortly thereafter. She therefore has the benefit of having been a student when she's dealing with current students, and this makes her in some ways much easier for them to trust. Not only does she know the program well, she knows the brothers well.

Her story is an interesting one, however, in that the relationship between Simon and Bekah is somewhat illicit. They shouldn't be together in the way that they are due to his position of authority over her. Those who view her as being an exploited child will, however, find her to be a surprise. Bekah may be a bubbly, happy person, but she's also the one who is in charge of her relationship with Simon, and she's definitely the one on top in their relationship in spite of their age difference.

The Perfect Family

Because of hers and Simon's past, Bekah sees the perfect family as being one that is blended. She's currently pregnant with her and Simon's first baby, but she would also like to adopt an older child and to potentially adopt a teenager from the ranch. She never got adopted herself, but Simon was adopted as an infant, and Tony, Logan, and Billy were also all adopted. This makes her want to build a family that way, but she's already so attached to the baby she's carrying that she refuses to separate a baby from its mother. For this reason, she insists that she and Simon adopt from foster care.

That being said, Bekah's not the type to go actively looking for a kid. The kid will wind up coming to them in some way or another, and it's going to have to be a strong connection before she adds a child to her family, no matter how much she might want to help every single teenager on the ranch. Not everyone is right for every family, a lesson that she learned during her own time in the system, and she wants to make sure that any child they choose to adopt is one who fits perfectly with their family.

Born to Ride

Before she came to Brook Haven Ranch, Bekah had never so much as seen a horse in her life, but she took quickly to them and discovered that she was a natural-born horseback rider. Horses have become the focus of her life, often coming even before her career, and she spends a lot of time with her horse (there's only one). Whenever she has the opportunity, she's with her American Quarter Horse. Even when she can't ride -- like now, as she's pregnant -- she's with the horse at every possible opportunity.

She believes that horses are the key to healing a lot of the kids on the ranch, and she believes that even those children who haven't had a lot of time with horses in the past or who are afraid of them will do well with learning how to ride and how to heal through their interactions with the animals. Rebekah will always be there to support the kids' riding efforts and to help them learn how to do more with their horses, both in terms of recreation and in terms of healing their hearts.

About Rebekah

Bekah is a perpetually sunny, enthusiastic person with an incredible love for life. She's the sort of person who goes out of her way to make other people feel good about themselves, and she nearly always has a smile on her face. It's rare to see her in a bad mood and she will do whatever she can to put the people around her in a good mood as well. Unfortunately her enthusiasm for people means that she doesn't always know what the boundaries are, and she can be more physical with people than what they want. It's not that she's trying to cross lines or she's attempting to force herself on someone, but that she doesn't know how to not be affectionate and physical. If you ask her to stop, she will! (But her feelings will be hurt.)

She worked the program back when she was a teenager, and so she is also an insider to the Brook Haven program. During her time in the program, her father abandoned her and chose not to continue parenting, though he had been the one who referred her to Brook Haven. For a while her heart was broken, but Bekah is good at picking up the pieces, and will encourage the students of Brook Haven to do it the way that she did when she was younger. There's no point in not trying your hardest to pick up and keep going, and she won't take excuses from the students either.

To be sure, Bekah is an incredibly active part of the Brook Haven program, and she is highly involved with all of the students, taking on a sort of supervisory role with them and working under her sister-in-law Tara as one of the therapists for the ranch. While she doesn't lead one of the groups or anything like that, she does take on a leadership role with the kids and she likes to spend her time getting to know them on a deep personal level. She's quite proud that she's able to keep up with all 144 of them when the ranch is full.

Platonic

Rebekah is an excellent friend, as long as you can handle the fact that she tends to keep a lot of friends and few of them particularly close. She's the sort of person who has a wide circle of friends, and no doubt there are going to be a ton of them for her. Most people would refer to her as a "social butterfly," the type of person who routinely plans social events and enjoys a good party. Most years Rebekah will be behind the holiday planning and make sure that everything is exciting and fun for everybody who attends the events.

Thank goodness she's not Type A!

Bekah is a solid friend, a shoulder to cry on, and the sort of person who can always come up with something fun to do together on a Friday night or a Tuesday afternoon. Her resources for fun are seemingly endless, and a lot of people would say that she doesn't have a serious bone in her body. That's definitely not the case, as her closest friends likely find out at some point, but she will definitely make sure that her friends are always having a good time.

She prefers friends in her age group (twenties, preferably mid twenties).

Romantic

Bekah is married to Simon Brook, so there won't be any other "current" lovers. That being said, she's the type of girl who tends to be popular with the boys. Not only is she very pretty but she has a great attitude and she's the type of woman who supports her man, so she's probably had at least one boyfriend in her past from the time that she was working with Brook Haven. She wasn't always the best student of the program in terms of her willingness to follow the rules, so this is quite a probability.

She's straight, so this will only be open to males, and at that I'm thinking only one male, with the possibility of two, depending on who they are and the nature of the first of those relationships.

Antagonistic

There are definitely going to be people who Bekah irritates. Not everybody likes somebody who smiles almost all of the time, and there are going to be people in all age groups who find her annoying because of her general sunny disposition. Don't mistake this for her being ditzy or overly-chipper: It's more that she's the type of person who looks for the good in things and encourages other people to find the magic as well. Some people won't like her Christian faith, others will be annoyed because she can find the good in bad situations, and some are the type who just won't want to be her friend but will be annoyed because she's so persistent with them.

The most likely enemies are actually students for this reason, so it's okay if your student doesn't want her to push her way into their life!

Familiar

Bekah's relationships with her in-laws are strong. They're the people who see her as she really is, a broken person who built herself up by working the program and who is now capable of things she wasn't before. They are the people who will see her tears and will know just how much she's been through over the past twelve years, as well as how hard she's worked to get to the point that she's at now.

They are also the only people who get to see her cry.

Other

For being such a positive person -- optimistic and seemingly care-free -- she is surprisingly hard on the students on the ranch. Somebody had to be hard on her a few years back (it was Logan and Tony for those curious) and so she's hard on the students now. She credits the ranch with being the force that saved her life, and she'd like to be that for the students now. Some of them aren't going to like her because she appears two-sided (it's just two sides of the same coin), and others might love her because she's always there for them with a hug when they need it.

Note that she is interested in adopting a teen from the program.

First Impressions

Most people like Bekah at first. She's an easy person to like and it's difficult not to like someone who is sincerely happy and wants the same for you. She's outgoing by nature, generous and loving to everyone who she meets, the sort of person who will give you her lunch if she notices that you don't have one of her own. There are a lot of things to love about Bekah and most of them are the first things that you'll notice about her not because she's hiding her true self but because she's so naturally Bekah.

The first thing that you'll see when you meet her is her cheerful, loving disposition and therefore most people who meet her will likely label her as "happy" or "outgoing" or "generous." Others might think of her as "obnoxious" or "nosy" however, and it doesn't take long to reach those conclusions either, especially for introverted types who don't want somebody "up in their business" "all the time."

Stranger Impressions

Much like the first impressions, people who have access to information about Bekah or are reviewing her recent history will find her to be gregarious, generous, and charitable. In town she's best known as a former troublemaker, but outside of Trader's Bend people know her as being a person who has donated large sums of money to local charities without asking for a return on that investment. Some might think that she's foolish, when the ranch is struggling financially, but Bekah is the sort who just smiles and reminds you that it's her tithe -- God will give back to her (and the ranch) what she gives to His people.

So like first impressions, stranger impressions may be mixed between those who see her as a pure troublemaker due to her adolescence, those who see her as being a generous do-gooder who has helped a lot of people in their part of Montana, and people who see her as a foolhardy woman who doesn't think about where she's putting her money until she's wasted it.

Friendly Impressions

Bekah is a remarkable friend, and her friends mostly view her as being trustworthy, loyal, and dedicated to making the world a better place. The more realistic among her friends may also view her as a little bit of a hippy, somebody who believes in things that cannot possibly exist, and whose head is in the clouds. They likely put up with her (and this behavior) because she is otherwise such a remarkable friend who will give the shirt off her back for somebody who is in need.

It should also be stated that her friends often worry that her cockeyed optimism is going to lead her to trouble because she walks into a situation she can't easily extricate herself from and winds up getting hurt due to her overall trust in people. Those who know her best may realize that she doesn't trust people nearly as much as she would at first seem to do (see below, "familiar impressions").

Familiar Impressions

The one group of people who really know Bekah are her family members. They understand her on a deeper level than most anybody else does, and they see her as someone who has been badly hurt and who nearly let her pain ruin her life. Logan and Tony in particular (but perhaps also Billy) see Bekah as someone who made a choice several years ago to be a better version of herself, and who, on doing so, never ever looked back at the old life again. It's not necessarily healthy, but it's what she's done.

Because they see her more clearly, Rebekah's family see her as someone who doesn't trust easily and who keeps people close in order to better see where their loyalties lie. They are more familiar with her personal truth than anyone else is, and friends who get this close are diamonds she will never, ever let go of.

Rival Impressions

Rebekah works pretty hard to avoid having rivals at all. She views herself as being on the same team as most people with whom she comes into contact. There is no competition in charitable giving, or competition in working with troubled youth, in her mind. If somebody else gets paid more to do the same job with the same kids, at least (in her mind), the kid is getting the help that they need, and she's never disappointed not to have been the one chosen to do the job in the first place.

Rivalry is, therefore, all in the mind of her "rivals," who probably see her as being the type of person who simplifies complex situations because she doesn't know how to handle them the right way in the first place. In this way, they promote themselves into feeling better about their own situation, since she can't possibly be as good as they are, in their own minds.

Enemy Impressions

Because Bekah will no doubt have quite a few enemies, they will likely have different views of her than one another. The dominant perception, however, is probably going to be that she is just too nosy and that she can't mind her own business to save her life. Of all of the reasons that people might dislike her, this one is the most common, and those who feel like she's too much of a busy-body will share the opinion/perception that she needs to keep her nose out of it.

Other enemies might be those who remember her from the past, when she was a wild thing first coming to Trader's Bend, and then when she lost her father and went wild after that. This is probably the older generation who see her as being a fake person who is putting on a false front and who will likely turn on the town again.

Authority Impressions

There aren't that many people in authority over Bekah any more, as she's put herself in a position to be in a very egalitarian relationship and she is very close with her in-laws, putting her in a position as co-owner of the ranch. The people who are in authority (though barely) are of course Logan and Amber, and to a lesser extent, Tara, and they will probably see Bekah as someone who has worked her tail end off to get to where she is today and therefore somebody who is deserving of respect.

Authorities will remember the trouble-maker that she was when she worked the ranch program herself, and they will respect her as somebody who has worked hard to establish herself, go to college, and come out on top, now working with the kids who are just like she used to be.

Coworker/Partner Impressions

As with almost anyone, coworkers are going to be a mixed bag, though they are probably more likely to see her as being somewhat of a nuisance. She's outwardly a very happy person, believes in magic, is an evangelical Christian, and generally sees the glass as being half full. Since she is so optimistic and the entire world cannot be made up of extroverted optimists, she's going to run into some problems along the way with her coworkers.

Most of them will probably see her as somebody who talks too much, mainly because coworkers in the therapy department don't wind up going with her into her sessions to see that she does a lot more listening than she does talking during those sessions, and angry coworkers are likely to be her strongest rivals -- though she won't participate in the rivalry, perhaps further pissing them off.

Lover Impressions

Bekah is a passionate lover who gives 100% to her relationships and doesn't ask for her partner to give as much as she does. Since she gives so much, it's natural for Simon to want to give back to her as much as she's given out to him. She's a good woman to be in a relationship with because she works so hard to make her partner happy, while not sacrificing her own ideals for him. Both independent and passionately loving, Bekah is a wonderful partner, and Simon probably sees in her someone who is willing to give her all to make their marriage work.

Self-Impressions

In the end, Bekah has two views of herself. On the one hand, she sees the person who she has come (through hard work and dedication); On the other, she sees the person who is angry and abandoned and pissed off at the world for allowing it to happen. She is the only person with access to all of her memories and for her, it's been a difficult road to walk. When she looks in the mirror, she sees somebody who still has a long way to go and who is still paying for the sins of her parents, though this isn't necessarily the truth of the matter.

Post-Mortem Impressions

People will look back on Bekah's life and see someone who dedicated herself to doing the best that she could for the people who she loved, at every step of the way. They will remember someone who never gave up hope that things would be better one day, and who went out of her way to make sure that the world became a better place because she was in it. No doubt she's going to have one of those funerals where the traffic is backed up for miles because of how much she gave to the central Montana community. This is where the universe pays you back for what you put out into it. There is no question that people will remember Bekah with love.

Mun Impressions

First of all, Bekah is a new character. I'm bringing a few to Brook Haven, so we'll see how it goes. For me, she was really pushy, wanted to be made, needed to be here, and wanted to operate under the principle that if she can be saved, then anybody else can necessarily be saved. In my mind she's probably just a little bit on the annoying side. She doesn't talk much, though I fear that this application will give that impression, but she smiles so much that you'd think you were with a Disney Princess out of costume. So much so that I'm thinking about writing that into her story and having her attend college in Florida to pull it off -- seriously. She never stops smiling and she's so full of hope that in spite of being annoyed, she inspires me.

I'm looking forward to playing her.

Habits

Morning Yoga

Rebekah credits yoga as one of the things that saved her life -- literally. It's been great for calming her down and putting her in a right frame of mind and so she does her morning yoga routine every single day before she heads out of the house to check on her horse. This is one way that she's been able to get control of her life and therefore it's something that she won't give up.

Chews Straws

When Bekah was fifteen, she was forced by the ranch to quit smoking. Before that, she'd managed to sneak cigarettes onto the ranch and to smoke in the private areas, but when Logan caught her, he isolated her and kept her on lockdown until she quit. One of the things that she used to help her quit was straws, which she chewed on in lieu of smoking. To this day she has a hand-mouth fixation and chews on straws to keep herself distracted from smoking (which she might have picked back up for two years in college).

Miracle Morning

In an effort to express more of her gratitude for the things that she has in her life, Rebekah has begun to practice the Miracle Morning, based on the book by Hal Elrod (affiliate link). She uses the steps of SAVERS to begin her morning, with her yoga routine being the E (exercise), and she swears that it has changed the way that she views her life.

Quirks

Listens First, Speaks Second

In spite of the fact that many people view Rebekah as particularly garrulous (presumably because she's a happy person who can talk your ear off in the right circumstances), she is the type of person who always listens before she speaks. She listens thoroughly and then reflects what she's heard back to the person with whom she is speaking. This is one way that she can show the students that she cares about them -- by listening more than she speaks. It makes her a great therapist.

Full of Praise

Rebekah believes in praise. She doesn't give it liberally, but when she does give it, it means something important to the person to whom she gives praise. This is something she learned from the brothers (most of all Logan, but also Simon, who isn't liberal with his praise at all). If she believes that one of the students has gone above and beyond, she will pull that person to the side and recognize them for what they've done, or praising them publicly if she knows that's their preference.

Full of Grace

Before every meal, Rebekah says Grace. She might do it quietly if she's in a crowd of people who don't believe as she does, but she is careful to always express her thankfulness to God for providing for her needs. Her prayers often include her gratitude to Him for having delivered her from the life that she once had and into the life that she has now. Students who see this might recognize her as a refuge for them if they believe, as she does, in Jesus Christ.

Hobbies

Sewing

When she has the time and the financial resources, Bekah enjoys sewing. Many of her own clothing items were made on her own sewing machine, and she can even knit -- by machine, anyway! If she's able to make her own clothes, she prefers to do it that way over purchasing them at the store, and so she does as much as she can at home.

Horsemanship

One could easily say that Bekah is a horseback rider, but she cares more about her horse than just the barrel racing (in which she's placed). She loves everything to do with horses and she has made her horse a hobby, even now that she's pregnant. Even when she can't ride (like now, being pregnant), she spends a lot of time in the barn with her mare.

Collecting Post Cards

Bekah is a highly optimistic person, but somehow she has gotten it into her head that she's never going to be able to travel the way that she would like. She substitutes for traveling by collecting post cards at antique shows or trading them online, and she has two large boxes of organized post cards that she's collected from all around the world. One day she'd love to visit all the places on her post cards.

Skills

Sewing • Excellent

One of the few things she learned before her mother passed away, Bekah learned to sew at a young age and she has continued to do so throughout the years. One of her favorite things to do is to sew teddy bears that she takes to the children in the long-term peds ward at the local hospital so that she can bring some comfort to children in need. This is only one of her charitable projects.

Barrel Racing • Excellent

Before she came to Brook Haven, Bekah had never been on a horse, but since her time as a student, she learned barrel racing and has become excellent at it over the years. She's even placed in competitions with her mare, who she's had since she was a student. The horse is getting on in years now, approaching twenty, but she continues to race with her.

Cooking • Adequate

The ranch teaches cooking to its students, but Bekah never quite picked it up the way that some people do, and she's merely adequate at cooking. Whenever she can, she eats at Tara's or Amber's houses so that she doesn't have to worry about letting Simon down with her terrible cooking. It's not nearly as bad as she thinks that it is!

Interests

Charitable Giving

Bekah has several charity projects to which she donates, apart from her normal tithe to the local church. She makes teddy bears that she gives to the long-term pediatric ward at the local hospital, and she crochets hats and scarves (not always well) that she distributes to the area needy so that they have something to keep them warm in the winter. Her goal is to find causes that are worthy of her time and her money and to give to those, knowing that it will come back to her, multiplied.

Fashion

Since she was young, Bekah has had an interest in fashion. She loves clothing and the different styles that people wear and she enjoys making her own designs and then wearing them. When she was younger, she considered being a fashion designer, but wound up deciding against it and opting for something more practical for her to do with her career life and her time.

Interior Design

Bekah is gradually learning interior design. She makes up for what she lacks in cooking skills with her ability to make a home very comfortable for the people who live there, and she's done work on all of the common rooms for the different groups at Brook Haven. Her designs are quite good and they make the ranch more homey than most boarding schools would be.

Desired Plots

Under Her Wing

There's no question that Bekah will not be every student's cup of tea, but she is specifically looking to adopt a teenager out of the program, and so she would like to find a teenager who she (and Simon) can take under her wing. This person is the sort of person who would relate to her and who might thrive on the type of sincere praise that she gives to the students, or maybe somebody who is a lot like she was when she was a teenager. Chemistry is the most important thing, but Bekah would love to have somebody like this in her life!

Baby on Board

Bekah is due to give birth some time in March. It's a strong possibility that she won't be able to make it to the hospital in time to give birth there, and it could be an interesting twist on the story if a student winds up delivering the baby somewhere on the ranch. This would have to happen some time in March since I'm not comfortable with a premature birth of a baby happening at home, and I don't think that it makes sense for this to happen overdue.

Stranded

We're coming up on the winter season (one in which we've never had an active Brook Haven Ranch) and it could be an appealing and interesting story line to have some people stranded in one of the smaller buildings, and to see how they get along with one another. This could be a good small plot, but I'd love for Rebekah to be involved in this particular plot with some of the students, maybe?

When people look at Nick, they tend to see a big dumb bully. For all most people experience of him, they might as well be right. At heart, Nick is a smart, sensitive kid who’s learned to act tough because it keeps him safe, but that’s buried deep enough that plenty of people will never encounter that side of him.

Bekah & Nick
First of all, I love the idea of Nick getting shoved against a wall by a pregnant woman. He'll be furious, but also pretty damn scared - that's a real threat to both his self-esteem and his reputation. I think your read is right that, prior to that, Nick would try to push her around and throw around some nasty comments to try to get a rise out of her, until he finds out he's bitten off more than he can handle. They're not going to have a good relationship after that happens, but it would get Nick to back off and be polite to her. I kind of like the idea that, after that, Nick avoids Bekah when he can, but she's also the only adult he's always, studiously, perfectly polite to, and most people don't know why...

Also, while I'm responding to you, I think Nick running into Rachel in the barn sounds like a great idea. I'm happy to write a starter for it.

Bekah & Emily
Emily and Bekah seem like opposites in personality, so I think it would definitely be fun if they ended up as friends. Maybe they initially don't get along - Emily seems kind of rude to Bekah, Bekah is a little sunny for Emily (and maybe Emily's a little jealous of the fact that Bekah's a bit younger than her, but seems to have her life a bit more together with a husband and a kid on the way).

But if Bekah's in charge of the holiday party, that would be a great opportunity for them to bond, maybe because Emily doubles down on helping out when Bekah needs an extra hand to get things done in time, and Emily realizes that she's underestimated how capable Bekah is.

Tara has been on the ranch since the moment she was born. She's known Brook Haven well before it was ever a safe haven for abused horses and kids that needed guidance. There isn't a piece of this land that she doesn't know or hasn't walked. She spent her life in this place, and she couldn't imagine it any differently.

When her father turned the ranch into what it is, and then when Logan took over it, she smiled and continued on. She never expected her dad to give her the ranch, not only was Logan older than her, but he was a living example of how the program worked.

More than anything, Tara wants to see Brook Haven thrive, and she knows that it can, but she doesn't want to have to play mediator to get it to. She wishes her brothers would get their shit together and figure it all out, because she's tired of translating. Even if she does understand what's going on, it doesn't make it any easier on her energy levels.

On top of everything else with the ranch, a new addition has joined them and this addition is one of Tara's biggest secrets. Grace Somers, her biological daughter who she allowed to be adopted by the girl's biological father and his wife. The fact that she's there, at all, has her concerned, but she doesn't even know how to bring it up with anyone.

And, if for any reason, she thought she could somehow continue to keep this secret, the only man who could blow the lid on the whole thing has shown up at the ranch looking to sponsor. She doesn't want Ethan Somers anywhere near the ranch, or her. So, not only does she have to figure out how to explain to her family (and her husband!) that she had a child, but that while she was pregnant with that child she had a relationship with the child's uncle and that he had been abusive of her -- and now he's at the ranch.

I can see these two getting along really well, actually. Even if Simon does tend to annoy Tara with his ... well, he's Simon. Need I say more? But she loves her brother, and I see her loving Bekah too!

Tara would be thrilled to help her with her spring garden, especially since she's pregnant and digging wouldn't be such a good idea.

I've gotten wary of greeting threads after botching some of them (sorry Emily!), but it would be nice to establish some relationships for Nathaniel and get him into the swing of things, and this sounds like it has more substance than a generic "meeting" thread, so I'd love to try it.

I really like this idea, and I think it's important to balance Karl's antagonistic plots with some friendlier ones. And Karl would like Bekah, especially because he'd see her as a success story for BHR who represents exactly the things he values about the program.

Griffin has been in foster care since he was six-years-old, and was referred to Brook Haven by his social worker. He's dealing with a lot of issues from his past, which particularly influences how he reacts to authority figures. He is energetic and extroverted and will probably get along fine with most others -- unless he doesn't, in which case he really, really won't!

Griffin & Bekah
I’m definitely interested in therapeutic-setting plots! Again, this is something that Griffin really needs -- he’s just such a stubborn so-and-so that he won’t allow himself to open up in that way yet. I think if Griffin is ever going to have a successful therapeutic relationship with anyone, it would definitely need to be a female (as there’s just no way he’d ever let himself be vulnerable with a male in the same way). I actually kind of think Bekah being pregnant could really help with this? Iit’s going to take a lot for Griffin to even be able to open up, let alone think that any adult/authority figure cares about him and will support him. I think he’ll be slightly more inclined to believe Bekah over others, though -- because while he can’t really remember his own mother (as she died when he was a toddler), he knows she loved him, and he knows she didn’t treat him horribly the way other adults have -- even if he can't properly remember that. He kept her name as his surname, after all. So I feel like he’d have some odd logic in that because she’s pregnant and going to be a mother, he’d listen to her a fraction more than he would to any other therapist, because her motherly nature would seem more… genuine? It’s still going to take a long while for him to get to that point, though. So as far as where I’d like it to go, well! I would love eventually for Griffin to be able to open up a little -- I’m not sure he’ll ever get to the point he can talk about everything in any great detail with anyone, but having positive interactions with a supportive and caring adult would certainly help him. Therapy has the potential to really help him deal with things -- if he can actually let himself get to that point. I can’t decide, exactly, how we’d get it started though. Griffin will be very difficult at first, in the sense that he really wouldn’t give Bekah much to work with. He wouldn't volunteer for therapy sessions, so it would certainly need to be assigned / required. As a writer, I hate feeling like I’m not giving my thread partners some good, workable-with content and cues to use as a springboard to push the thread forward -- but Griffin just wouldn’t and I wouldn’t want to force it, because I don’t think it’d seem genuine. So it really depends on what Bekah’s therapy style would be in this situation as to how much Griffin could give -- and obviously, I’d want the threads to be interesting and rewarding for Bekah and yourself, too! So definitely let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like for Bekah to experience/do in her therapy role and I’ll see if it might work for Griffin! I’m also thinking it could be interesting for Griffin to find out that she was on the program at some point, but I don’t know if that’s the sort of thing she’d actually tell any of her students! I realise none of this is a specific plot suggestion, but this is probably one of the more complex situations for Griffin to deal with, so I thought I’d kinda just let you know my initial thoughts first!
