Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

Things Nadia Can Do

Play the Guitar - Nadia has been playing the guitar since she was nine years old and she found an old acoustic that belonged to her sixth foster father. He let her keep it and she played it in spite of its being too big for her. The guitar became the great love of her life, and she learned to tune it with an electric tuner, and to play it by feeling the music in the box. She kept that guitar right up until it was taken from her when she was admitted at Brook Haven, and it is the biggest sticking point that she's had with her leader and counselors.

Nadia is, in fact, quite good at playing the guitar, as she'll be the first to tell you that she's better than most -- though she wouldn't know it first hand, of course. She loves to "listen" to music by sitting on speakers or turning it way up and putting her hand against the wall, and she's already turned the radio in the lodge way up on high and leaned against the wall to hear it. This got her into a bit of trouble, of course, but that doesn't mean that she won't do it again. After all, everybody should be able to enjoy music.

Speak English - English is actually Nadia's first language. Her first two foster homes believed initially that she was retarded due to brain damage at birth, but by the time that she was four it became apparent that she was stubborn, not intellectually disabled. The brain damage destroyed her hearing, leaving her profoundly deaf.

Her foster parents after that -- the string of them that she had -- insisted that she take speech therapy and that she learn how to read lips. The result of this is that she speaks very good English with almost no accent at all (which in fact makes her sound strange as nearly everyone has some kind of an accent. She communicates well with Hearing people but very much prefers to use American Sign Language to communicate.

Read and Write - There was a time that Nadia's teachers didn't expect her to do well in their classes because they treated her Deafness as a disability. She was overlooked and she had to push herself to learn how to read and write. It's less natural for someone without the auditory capacity to hear the words being read aloud, and therefore it took her longer to learn than many children. Now, however, she enjoys a wide range of books. Her favorite is A Tale of Two Cities and she in fact enjoys writing in her journal a great deal.

It might surprise some people how much Nadia enjoys talking about books, and in particular classic novels. She's known to lean over a book and speak in rapid sign language, and this may take some people by surprise because her writing isn't always coherent. Grammar and spelling aren't her strong suit, in part because she's been allowed to get away with not doing as much work as other students in her year!

Discuss Politics - It's the last thing that a lot of people expect from someone like Nadia, especially considering that she's Deaf (and someone once said because she's a girl as well), but she is fully capable of discussing politics. In particular she's interested in the rights of differently abled persons, women's rights, and the rights of adopted people.

She considers it politics, but in the end it's mostly activism. Nadia is the type of person who likes to feel as though she can make a difference. Her entire life has been about how much she can't affect anything, so now that she's at Brook Haven and she's learning that she has power, she's wanting to spend her time putting energy toward making real, lasting change for people like her.

Ride a Horse - When Nadia first came to the ranch, there was a bit of a stir about whether or not she should join in the regular riding lessons with her peers. It didn't come from the staff so much as from other students, and the staff defended her until she was able to get on the back of a horse. It was the first time that she'd done it, in spite of her love of country music, and it was a thrilling, but terrifying, experience.

Nobody has determined whether or not she can ride a horse well but she is definitely able to get her body into the saddle and sit there while not moving. It's about as far as she's gotten with her lessons so far, but she has prove that she's able to follow instructions if she has an interpreter in her lessons. Fortunately for her, Logan Brook knows ASL.

Be a Friend - It's always been a bit tough for Nadia to make friends because other people her age find it frustrating to deal with her political beliefs and the fact that they have to face her when speaking to her. Her social life was a mess for a long time, and when she first arrived on the map, she's had a tough time getting to know the other students.

Now that she's begun to settle in at the Ranch, she's having an easier time making friends, and proving that she can be a great friend to the people who accept her. She's loyal and devoted and she will do whatever she can to defend her friends.

Rappel - It scared her at first on a number of levels. What would happen if one of her group had to call out a warning and she couldn't hear it? What she do if her foot slipped? But all of the teens on the ranch seem to fear rappelling at first and she tried it for the first time this spring -- nobody's letting her get away without trying the things that the other kids on the ranch can do.

It's not something that she loves, but she's growing as a person, and she's finding that in spite of the limits that were set on her by former foster parents, she is more than capable of doing things that Hearing people can do.

Drive a Truck - This is one of the things that Nadia is the most proud of. She wants a truck of her own so badly that she can taste it, and she has asked her father three times now if he'll buy her one. With the spring charity raffle going on, she's begged him for money to buy a ticket because she wants to be one of those girls who drives a truck.

She's cried real tears over this. She's capable of driving the truck, changing a tire, changing the oil if she has to, and has learned as much as she can from the ranch's mechanics, but she still hasn't managed to get her hands on a set of her own keys.

Things Nadia Can't Do

Hear - With everything that she can do, there is only one thing that her Deafness prevents her form doing: Hearing.

Nadia was born too quickly, pushed out with the cord wrapped around her neck. She suffered a lack of oxygen at birth and came away with only minor cerebellar damage as a result. The result of her rapid birth was that damage to her brain caused her to be born deaf. She was diagnosed at three days old -- as she puts it, she passed her Deafness test -- and since then it has caused potential adopters to overlook her, foster parents to treat her as though she was retarded, and a lot of people to treat her as though she has a disability.

Like many Deaf people, she considers her Deafness a blessing. She doesn't have to hear the noise of the ranch, the arguments that other students in her group have, the blaring of other people's music in the main lodge when they're allowed to have the radio on. Moreover, she has recently been introduced to the Deaf community in Trader's Bend, and given a name sign for the first time.

Hearing people don't have that, and she considers her Deafness a blessing.

The Guitar

When Nadia came to Brook Haven, she had to give up her guitar. It might seem silly to somebody else, but to her it's a lifeline. She's been playing since she was nine years old and the guitar is a way that she connects to other people her own age. It's something that she feels she does better than most other people -- though some might ask how she would know the difference, since she can't hear the music that she's playing.

The guitar has caused more arguments for her with other students and the staff than anything else that she's done on the ranch so far, and she has fought and cried and literally bled for that old wooden box. The only thing she hasn't done is earn the privileges that will allow her to have it back.

Finding Faith

Nadia recognizes that compared to a lot of the kids at Brook Haven, she's had a good life -- and that's accounting for sixteen years in foster care and being Deaf. Even so, she's had a very isolated life. As a young child, the system that cared for her wrote her off as mentally retarded due to brain damage during birth (the brain damage which resulted in her being born profoundly deaf). As she grew older, foster parents insisted on Speech Therapy, and she was twelve before she met someone who taught her American Sign Language. She's had a very isolated life, though she's never thought of herself as underprivileged. Plenty of people had it harder than she did.

The ranch, however, has taught her that no matter how cheerful she's been, she's still dealing with some underlying issues, and now she has to find faith in herself. Trust is a serious issue for Nadia, whose mother abandoned her at a fire station when she was only a few hours old. Now she has to trust herself, her horse, and her father, who she recently connected with in Trader's Bend.

My Father the Fiend

It has been difficult for Nadia to connect with her father. She found him through a process of comparing DNA analysis, and if he had not been a convicted criminal, she might not have found him at all. Because of his past, it has been particularly difficult for them to be together, and they have had to fight the courts and the system for him to have custody of her. Because his conviction is an old one, and because he was eighteen at the time that he committed his crime, he was finally granted custody.

Then he moved her to Brook Haven Ranch. Since then she's been trying to figure out if he really wants her in his life, and if he doesn't, why he worked so hard for three years to get custody of her. She's angry with him for putting her in as a student when he works there, instead of letting her live with him. This is something she's still overcoming.

The Dying Boy

It's strictly forbidden for Brook Haven students to date anybody, so of course Nadia is seeing Thomas Montgomery, the kid with the brain tumor that has screwed up his coordination. She's not sure that she's in love with him, but to see the two of them together you'd be sure that she did. She's gentle and sweet and affectionate with him, and he doesn't seem to mind that he has to look at her when he talks. She's tried to teach him ASL so that they can communicate better -- his lips are hard to read when his eyes suddenly twitch, distracting her -- and they are getting along better than anyone planned.

Their relationship runs the risk of being stopped by the staff if they are too affectionate with one another, but so far they've been allowed to casually hang around one another. Nobody has caught them making out and Nadia hopes to keep it that way.

About Nadia

Nadia came to Brook Haven about a month ago. Her biological father, Flynn, is the leader of the Tenderfoot group and through a process of intense persuasion, convinced a judge to send her to the ranch as a student so that they could spend some time getting to know one another.

She's quite the sassy presence on the ranch right now. She comes with a lot of baggage and she's so busy pretending that her baggage doesn't bother her that in the end it's increasingly obvious that she's as troubled as any of the other kids on the ranch. Nadia has a lot to say about everything, but her biggest issue is that the staff took her guitar away from her when she first arrived and they haven't given it back to her because she hasn't gained the privileges necessary to have the guitar.

Her attitude is generally good, but Nadia does tend to be fairly demanding. It's something that she believes is a natural consequence of not being able to hear, though it's probable that when she encounters more of the Deaf community (and there is a bit of one in Trader's Bend) that she's going to find herself rethinking this. Her past, and the fact that her foster parents mostly ignored her when they weren't forcing her to learn to speak their language, and this is the real root cause of her making too many demands on people.

Platonic

Nadia is nothing if not friendly with her peers. She loves people and she speaks excellent English with only a slight accent (all Deaf people have an accent, in my experience, but some are stronger than others). She's outgoing and enjoys introducing herself to new people and new experiences. She's eager to get to know other teenagers on the ranch and to gain new experiences with her group. Just don't tell her father that. She's still busy rebelling against his newfound authority and she doesn't want him to know how much she really appreciates the ranch environment.

Romantic

At the moment, she has a man in her life. Well, a boy, really. She met Thomas when she came to the ranch and the two of them have been thick as thieves since then. They may not be in love (she's not sure about that yet) but they definitely have a strong bond with one another and she cares for him a great deal. That being said, she is pansexual and she would be interested in a polyamorous relationship if Thomas was open to it and it was with the right person.

Antagonistic

Everybody has somebody who doesn't like them, and Nadia isn't likely to be an exception to the rule. Sometimes she might slow her group down by being Deaf, and there are going to be those people who believe that all Deafies should get a CI and learn how to live among the Hearing without complaining or using ASL. ASL haters are going to be her biggest sticking point, and she will get into a straight up argument with you over it whether you're hearing or deaf.

First Impressions

The first thing that most people think about Nadia is that she's terribly spacey. Because she's deaf, she's inclined to check out instead of engaging with people in a group setting. Even though she's outgoing and extroverted, Nadia's not good in busy social situations. Since most people meet her in busy social situations, she can seem as though she's not well grounded and as though her head's in the clouds. It leaves a lot of room for poor first impressions of Nadia. First impressions die hard, but at least they aren't altogether incorrect. Struggling to keep up with conversations with Hearing people means that Nadia often simply checks out rather than attempting to follow.

Stranger Impressions

Someone who has heard Nadia's story (perhaps through rumors around the ranch) will think of her either as being highly tenacious (after all, she worked for that long to find her father) or as being manipulative. The majority probably wonder what she's after in seeking out her father, and what she's doing on the ranch when there are other kids who have suffered a wider range of abuse, who have mental illnesses, or who have suffered more in foster care. No doubt there are some who think that she took a spot from somebody who needed it most, and others who worry about her involvement with Flynn. Stranger impressions are unlikely to be good, leaving Nadia to make up for it when she actually meets somebody -- and then failing because she checks out.

Friendly Impressions

Entirely different from both first impressions and stranger impressions, friends find Nadia affectionate, giving, loving, and courageous. One-on-one, or even in small groups (especially where people know ASL), she is dynamic, interested, and an excellent "listener." She's apt to pay close attention to what her friends have to say before providing feedback, and then to sign in rapid gestures that support her friends and their activities, actions, and goals. Contrary to those first impressions, she is engaged and dynamic, always working on supporting her friends and paying close attention to what they have to say about their individual situations. She's especially good in therapy, provided that people speak one at a time and make sure to look at her when speaking.

Familiar Impressions

Until she met her biological father, Nadia never had much family. Foster families found her easy to ignore because of her deafness, but one thing that all families connected to her have in common is that she is stubborn and often hard to get along with. Nadia tends to demand her way from families, and she's not easy to ignore if you give her room to make her "voice" heard. Nadia is the foot-stomping, angry, "give me what I want" type, and she's not afraid of what this means. She has even attempted to use her father's authority on the ranch to get the things that she wants without having to work for them.

Rival Impressions

Nadia's likely rivals include people who stubbornly refuse to learn how to communicate with her. Most of all, these are people who speak with their faces turned way from her and then act like she's supposed to understand them. The opposite is true, too: The people who speak too slowly or raise their voices to her are the ones who are going to wind up being her rivals. Most of them find her annoying for asking for additional accommodation for her deafness. They are the most apt to say that she has a "disability" and to argue with her when she says that she can do anything that they can do. This is the number one way to antagonize Nadia, but from the perspective of the rival, she should be in a different school for people who are like her. Some probably also equate her with "deaf and dumb."

Enemy Impressions

Enemies only take the antagonism of rivals a bit further, except that for them, they've rubbed Nadia wrong until she's lashed out at them. She isn't always the most friendly person, surely not with the people who she doesn't like. Some might think of her as a "tattle tale" who "runs to Daddy" when she doesn't like something that somebody does. For Nadia, this means if somebody refuses to accommodate her deafness, she will speak up. This definitely rubs some people the wrong way, but she's not going to back down just because people think that they can push her around. While the enemies may see that Nadia is the one doing the pushing, her perspective is the opposite, and this only adds fuel to the fire, creating more tension.

Authority Impressions

Authorities find that Nadia is stubborn, pushy, and difficult to discipline. She doesn't always do what she's told, and rewarding her for good behavior doesn't encourage more of the desired behavior. This can lead to arguments with Nadia, who has high expectations of how the ranch staff should operate. When she wants something, she is bold enough to demand it, and when she doesn't get it, she may use under-handed, manipulative tactics to get it. Once an authority figure has earned her trust, however, they will likely find that she's compliant (provided that they can keep her on task and not diverge from it) and that she's willing to work the program provided that there is actually something in it for her. Group leaders will likely note that Nadia is less emotionally and psychologically fragile than most, and that therefore the ranch isn't always her safest place yet.

Coworker/Partner Impressions

There's one in every group, isn't there? In the Ridgerunner group, Nadia's the group member who tends to get the other group members into trouble with her own behavior. When she refuses to comply with instructions, the entire group might suffer as a result. On this level, most of her group mates probably dislike her. On the other hand, she is bold enough to demand what she feels that they as a group deserve, and she's smart enough to know how to get what she thinks they should have. Do the Ridgerunners deserve a break from hiking for the month so they can go swimming instead? She'll get that for them. Do they need an overnight trail ride to get away from the ranch for a bit? She'll get them that. Do they want the best job at the next event? She'll get them that. So their impressions are very mixed.

Lover Impressions

Nadia is a sweet and gentle lover who puts the needs of her lover first. Contrary to the impressions that she leaves most others with, her lovers know exactly who she is. Kind and giving, she puts their needs before any of her own, bringing comfort and stability to her relationships. She's the sort of lover who takes time to understand how her lover feels and who is willing to put her own needs aside to make sure that they are satisfied with the relationship. She'll go out of her way to make sure that her lovers have everything that they need in order to balance their lives. If it comes down to it, she is a lover who will cry with her lovers, who will hold them when they are sad, and who will pour all of her positive energy into them. They tend to love her very much.

Self-Impressions

Nadia genuinely likes herself. She's come through more than a lot of people think about. For most of the people on the ranch, physical and sexual abuse mark the bulk of their experience, but she has spent most of her life undergoing deep psychological abuse intended to make her feel like less than what she is. She sees herself as a capable of anything (except perhaps hearing) and she sees her deafness as an advantage rather than a disadvantage. After all, Hearing people can't turn off the sounds around them so completely as she can, and just experience the joys of being in silence. Though she's extroverted, Nadia still needs her time alone, and this is quite a way to get away from everything. She sees herself as courageous and powerful.

Post-Mortem Impressions

During her life, people find Nadia irritating and demanding. After her death, they are more likely to see a girl who set out to get what she wanted and who overcame obstacles in order to make the most of what her life had given her. She was pushy and sometimes rude, she often ignored people if they didn't suit her, but she never stopped striving to make her dreams come true. She's the sort of person that people want their kids to look up to as long as she's not influencing their children to do things they wouldn't like, and in death she is a role model who can no longer affect change in the young people around her. Nadia always did her best, and she made it further than a lot of people come out of foster care. By never giving up, she achieved some pretty big dreams, and she's a role model for the next generation.

Mun Impressions

Whoah boy. So let me start by saying that I love Nadia. I do. She's vivacious and exciting and adventurous and Oh! so alive!. Because I also have Thomas in my head, I can tell you that she's a good person with a sweet soul and a real love for people in spite of the way that she acts. On the other hand, she's also an antagonistic little twit at times who won't let things go. Nadia's a dog with a bone when she wants something, she can push people too far, and she doesn't know when to stop teasing once she gets the idea that teasing is a good idea. "No" is a foreign word to her and sometimes she bugs people -- including me -- until they want to scream. All in all, though, she's a good girl with a big heart, and a genuine love of people.

Habits

Talks with her Hands

Even when she was living with foster parents who refused to learn American Sign Language (or to allow Nadia to learn it), Nadia always communicated exhuberently with her hands. Whenever she speaks aloud, she talks as quickly with her hands as she does with her voice. Now that she's learning ASL, she generally actually uses the signs for the words that she's speaking aloud. In the past, however, she used her hands to communicate emotion while she spoke vocally to her peers or to her foster families. Sometimes she even uses her hands when she's talking to herself, and it's not altogether unusual to see her signing to herself when she's upset or has a problem that she needs to work through.

Morning Check-In

Every morning before she goes to breakfast, Nadia goes to the Tenderfoot Boy's cabin to make sure that Thomas is okay. She's one of the only students on the ranch that knows how sick that he is and she worries. Although she trusts that the adults (her father in particular) have it under control, she won't risk that he didn't wake up during the night and that she's lost him. So she waits for him outside the cabin until he comes out and then she helps him to get to the dining lodge so that they can eat breakfast together. Thanks go her walking with him, he generally keeps his feet under him until the two of them have to part ways for morning chores. This has become a ritual between them.

Afternoon Tea

The students aren't allowed to drink black or green tea on the ranch, so Nadia has to settle for the herbal varieties that are available to her. Even so, she is prone to taking her tea to the piano in the main lodge every afternoon with some music, and playing it as loud as she possibly can. Because she can't hear it, she must feel it through the floor boards, and so she plays loud. The tea is the habit, not the music, which she can't find time for every day. Tea has been such an important ritual for her for so long that she refuses to give it up, even if it does mean fruit infusions instead of real black tea the way that she like sit.

List Making

Lists are one way that Nadia has learned to find control over her own out of control life. She is a list-maker, and she puts together a list every morning of what she plans to do for that day. It helps to remind her of what she wants to accomplish, what she has to do, and where she needs to be. Once she's allowed to have a planner or a bullet journal, she will keep track of hers and Thomas's appointments as well, and will likely request to be allowed to go with him to his appointments.

Quirks

Deaf

When Nadia was born, the cord was wrapped around her neck and she was born too quickly. This resulted in a traumatic brain injury, which ended with her becoming deaf. She was only a couple of weeks old when she was diagnosed with profound deafness. Her mother abandoned her when she was born, and Nadia went from foster home to foster home, where she was forced to learn to read lips and speak English or not communicate at all. The authorities provided opportunities for her to learn how to speak well, and so she became fluent and speaks with almost no accent. Still, when she's feeling lazy it's obvious that she is deaf.

Loud Music

Just because she's deaf doesn't mean that Nadia isn't able to enjoy music. She enjoys it so much in fact that she plays both the guitar and the piano -- loudly. The volume helps her to "feel" the music that she's playing or that she's listening to. It upsets her when she's asked to quiet it down, though this is definitely something that should happen at some point (see desired plots). Whenever Nadia interacts with music though, she has it turned up (or played) as loud as she possibly can so that she can feel the vibrations through the walls or floors around her. This allows her to enjoy music as much as -- though not in the same way as -- the hearing folks.

Calloused Fingers

Deaf people tend to touch a fair bit, and pagans perhaps even more so. Because of this combination of traits, Nadia is definitely a toucher. This alone is a quirk of her personality, but on top of that, those she touches will notice that the tips of her fingers are very calloused and that her fingernails are clipped down very short. This is because she is a guitar player, and she needs to keep her fingernails short in order to fret the strings. The strings themselves have left her with callouses on the fingertips where they have had to toughen up to work the strings and the fret board. When she touches someone, her fingers are nearly always rough.

Colorful Hands

It's hard to miss something unusual about the hands of somebody who uses them as their primary form of communication. Nadia's are often colorful with the paint that she uses during art therapy and her art classes. Painting is a relatively new hobby of hers, but she's learned a lot about herself through painting. Enthusiastic, her clothes and hands are often completely covered in paint. She doesn't tend to think much of it and doesn't bother to wash it off until she absolutely has to. Painting is supposed to be fun, and Nadia enjoys bearing the marks of her enjoyment as she goes forward into the rest of her day.

Hobbies

Guitar

When Nadia was nine years old, a foster father gave her a guitar. It was an old, beat up acoustic badly in need of new strings, but it was the best gift that she'd ever been given. She loved that guitar so much that she sat in her room and played it for hours on end, finally following videos online to learn how to finger the notes and then teaching herself what each note felt like. It was the first time that she discovered for sure that she could do anything that a person with perfect hearing could do, even though she had total hearing loss.

Painting

There were times when Nadia was growing up that the only way that she could express what was inside of her was by sketching in one of her notebooks. As she got older, she learned how to paint, and was able to find jobs or steal enough money to purchase canvases and paints so that she could begin to paint. In a visual world, this turned out to be an amazing way for her to express what was going on inside of her. She is very much a visual and tactile person, and Nadia loves to paint a lot of texture into her paintings because it gives her something to feel. For this reason she generally uses oil paints on her paintings.

Spelunking

Nadia is a naturally very adventurous person, and though she loves all sorts of outdoor activities, spelunking (cave-exploring) is her favorite part of adventuring and exploring the world around her. Finding new places that nobody has been before is exciting (though unlikely on the ranch) and she loves to be inside and see what animals and minerals she can find inside these caves. It's part of her adventurous spirit, which makes her want to do more with her life as she gets older. In a limited way, this is something that she can do in Montana even before she's able to take off and explore the world and everything it contains.

Skills

American Sign Language • Learning

When Nadia was growing up in foster care, she was left to either learn how to read lips or not communicate at all. It was a sad state of affairs for a little deaf girl, and a very ableist point of view for her foster parents. She's only been learning ASL for the past couple of years and in spite of it now being her primary form of communication, Nadia is still definitely[/i] learning. Her English is good enough that the grammar has taken a lot of work for her to learn, and she sometimes stumbles with her signs and doesn't express herself as well as she could. Whereas most Deaf people sign with large movements, she's still a little bit tight and insecure with the way that she signs.

Lip Reading • Proficient

Since Nadia spent most of her life reading lips to communicate with other people, she is quite good at reading lips. This doesn't mean that she's going to tell you what people across the room are talking about if you ask her, but it does mean that she's able to communicate with somebody who doesn't know any ASL -- without needing an interpreter to help her to get to know what's being said. As long as she can see your mouth, she can tell what you're saying. No need to speak louder, no need to speak more distinctly than usual. Just speak normally and she will be able to pick up on what you're saying. No, it's not easy.

Oral Skills • Excellent

In an effort to help her to assimilate, the people in charge of Nadia during her time in foster care pushed her into speech therapy four days a week. There, she learned to speak clearly and distinctly with the help of hearing aids, and so she knows perfect English and her ability to speak is clear with very little "accent" to signify her as being deaf. This means that some people might not know that she's deaf when she first speaks to them, causing some confusion later on down the road. It also means that when she has to, she's able to communicate well with people who don't know any ASL.

Interests

Deaf Culture

Thanks to her upbringing in foster care, Nadia was discouraged from exploring the culture of her people. Now that she is free of the restraints of the foster care system, she is learning that there is a whole world of deaf people out there who she can get to know and who have their own culture -- right down to the language that they share with one another. She's looking forward to having the opportunity to learn more about what it means to be Deaf with a capital D. Whenever she has the chance, she hammers fellow Deafies with questions about their experience and how she can better fit in with them. They are becoming a little family on the ranch.

Cancer Treatments

Dia's boyfriend is sick with cancer. She is likely the only student on the ranch (other than Thomas himself) who is aware that he has a meduloblastoma, and she has gone out of her way to learn as much as she can about his disease and how it affects him, as well as how the treatments affect his body. Though she's in favor of him remaining in treatment, Nadia worries about Thomas and the way that the treatments might make him feel. They have been known to cause a lot of side effects and she's anxious that he's going to wind up sicker than he was before he did the treatments. Most of all she just wants to be by his side when he needs her.

Music

It probably goes without saying since she plays two instruments, but at the same time there are probably those who are surprised to find that the deaf girl loves music that much. Nadia is a great lover of music, especially when it's turned up loud enough for her to feel it. She's aware of music in popular culture, she knows who the popular bands are, and especially which ones that she likes (mostly rock n' roll and metal). She can talk music with other students if they are interested in getting feedback from a deaf girl, and she's even quite capable of participating in band settings, since she's a skilled guitarist and can do anything percussive since that's almost all feel as it is!

Desired Plots

Turn it Down!

Any time that Nadia listens to music, she listens to it turned way up, because that way she can feel the music's vibrations through the floors and the walls. I've tried this before and the thread got dropped before it could get anywhere, but I would enjoy a thread in which Nadia is playing the piano in the Main Lodge and is told to play more quietly because she's playing so forte in order to feel the music and therefore play better.

The idea behind this is that the person stopping her is a bit more aggressive than necessary, not realizing that she's deaf and that it's remarkable that she can play as well as she does at all.

Mistaken Identity

It's a very low-key plot, but Nadia was originally one of five siblings -- quintuplets -- who were all fostered in different homes across the midwestern United States at the time that they were born. Somebody could mistake her for one of her sisters -- probably Carrie, who is the toughest of the five and gave up a baby for adoption by force when she was fifteen -- and confuse the snot out of Nadia, as only one of the five has an inkling that there's sisters out there at all.

This is best done with another teenager who might have been in a home with the other girl. It would confuse Nadia and eventually get the conversation to open up with Flynn about what's going on with the others.

You're not Deaf!

For somebody who has never heard a voice in her life, Nadia is very oral and reads lips incredibly well. For this reason she is able to pass as somebody who is not deaf. A good thread idea is rooted in somebody saying that they don't believe that she's actually deaf and that they think she's doing this for the attention rather than because she actually can't hear.

Obviously this is most likely to come from somebody who is new to the ranch and particularly who doesn't know her father (since Flynn can be a bit of a bad boy as it is) but this would be an interesting thread to get involved in with somebody!

Emily is the character of mine that Nadia's definitely interacting with, since she's Nadia's English teacher. There's some Shakespeare in Emily's course, and one of the things she's really trying to get the class to understand is that they were written to be heard, not read on a page - she's having a lot of in class readings and that sort of thing. Having Nadia in the class obviously complicates that, because she does want to include Nadia. Emily's going to realize that she has no idea what it's like for Nadia to read something like that, and I think she might ask Nadia about it. She'd also like to find a way to incorporate some insight from that into the class, and she'd want to ask Nadia for ideas on how to do that. I don't know how Nadia would respond. Maybe she'd like the idea, or maybe she'd be frustrated that Emily's making it her job to educating her teacher (and to some extent, the class) about Deafness, or perhaps something else.

Yes, Emily would definitely support that. It's something she'd struggle with understanding, because language for her is so verbal (for instance, I expect her to be very concerned that Nadia is missing something by not being able to hear the way things rhyme), but she's genuinely interested in Nadia's perspective. One idea Emily could definitely get interested in is having one day where, instead of reading a section out loud, students sign it.

If this sounds interesting, I could write a starter for them.

Nadia & Amelia Roseooooooo! I think that they would be super interesting together. Not exactly friends, but they don't exactly understand each other. Because Amelia Rose is standoff-ish, and Nadia reads body language so well, they just won't know how to interact with each other. It'll just be a cycle of them not understanding how the other person is feeling, and Amelia Rose being stressed about what Nadia is thinking, but not knowing how to voice that. I do think that they could eventually get over that barrier-- but it would take time, and most likely a third party stepping in to being like "you guys have a lot in common, and could learn from each other."Hit me back!

Viola was born to South Korean immigrants. Soon after she was born, they found out that she was blind. There was no apparent reason at the time, and they still don't know today why.

Viola was a kind child, and always cared deeply for her 8 siblings, and absolutely loved taking care of things, as well as rock n' roll music. She made few friends in school, but Loretta Clark stood by her side.

She eventually got a degree in Literature, and her parents were proud. She currently works as a Grade 8 English teacher

I think it's a very interesting idea, especially if Nadia ends up getting the guitar back somehow. Viola doesn't really know how to play any instruments, but she could definitely learn, though it would be harder, or maybe she could just sing. Maybe Viola could push to have instruments allowed, but under watch or something like that? It would be a pretty interesting gimmick, if they ever needed one. Maybe they could end up playing at some Brook Haven Events, if they do form a band? Might need a few other bandmates if we go that way, but two could definitely work as well(instruments like bass guitar and drums, if that's the sound they want) Viola might feel a little bad about not being able to learn ASL, so she might try to make it "easier" for Nadia to communicate with her, while actually making it harder. She hasn't had much interaction with anybody in the Deaf community, so she doesn't know much about that kind of stuff.

Nolan's been in foster care since he was two. He excelled at academics, and spent most of his childhood keeping apart from the other foster kids, believing that his intelligence made him special. When he hit his teens, that began falling apart as the competition to be the best student around intensified. His escalating emotions led him to brandish a knife at a foster parent, which got him sent to a group home. Teachers who worried about his performance recommended him to Brook haven.

Nolan yelling at a deaf person for ignoring him. That's a real "kick the puppy" moment to get him started on the site http://files.b1.jcink.com/html/emoticons/smile.gif . That said, it is something I could see him doing, so I'm down for it. I don't know how long it would end up being - once he figures out what's going on, I imagine he'll want to leave the scene pretty quickly.
