Welcome to Brook Haven!
Welcome to Brook Haven Ranch! We are a 18+ premium role playing community set in Trader's Bend, Montana. Our concept is the culmination of twenty years of plotting and planning. We feature a rich, developed program in which many troubled characters thrive. Our community is one of the best on jcink and we look forward to you becoming a part of it!
Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

All about Jack

• Jackson introduced his friend Donny to his little sister with the intention of setting them up. He was happy when they got married.

• Jackson can almost always be found in jeans and boots (of some variety), except on Sunday mornings, when he's dressed for church.

• Until recently, he spent his life in the military. He retired as a Colonel after turning down a position of Brigadier General.

• Jackson is one of those guys that cuts his hair every other week. He's thinks it's important that he look like an adult. He has the same expectation of Owen.

• While in the military, he managed to put away some money and make some investments -- it was one of those things that his father insisted upon. He's not a filthy rich guy, but he's definitely comfortable financially.

• He has high expectations of his kids. Sometimes too high.

• When he moved onto the ranch, he got a dog -- he's got one for Owen lined up too.

• He'd be more than happy to figure out horses for his kids, if they wanted them, but he believes that kids who have animals should care for them.

• This isn't a short term move. Trader's Bend, Montana is it.

• Sunday church isn't negotiable (for his kids and family). For students on the ranch, Sunday church is highly encouraged.

• When he first married his wife, he loved her. It wasn't until he discovered that she'd been abusing their son and using him to abuse their son that he cut ties. He also threatened to put her in jail if she tried to come after him or the kids.

• He can't stand child abusers.

• Jackson grew up in Trader's Bend.

• His favorite food is Irish Lamb Stew.

• Guy isn't the only one who thinks that Jack is too hard on his son. His little brother also thinks that he's too hard on Owen, and that if he doesn't learn when to back off, he might lose the relationship forever. He tells Sean (his little bro) to back off.

• Jack uses corporal discipline with his children. He's a country boy at his core, and the truth is that he thinks that a sore butt can keep most kids from repeating the came mistake again.

• He doesn't see how what he's doing with Owen could be seen as going overboard.

• Jack frequents the local bar about once a week. He doesn't drink heavily, but he does enjoy going out to get away and it lets him have a moment. He also keeps alcohol in his home, he just rarely uses it and always keeps a note of where the alcohol level is at (teenagers in the home).

• He doesn't like having the tv on in his home. The only time he uses it is when he's watching sports, and he's thought about removing it from his place all together.

• He doesn't any longer allow his children to have access to computers or tablets. He doesn't like that, in this day and age, that kids are more attached to their electronics than their friends and family. While he isn't an extrovert and doesn't want to "force" anyone into anything, he feels like there are other useful things they could be doing that don't involve electronics.

• He's really hard on the kids in his group, and he's that way because he cares about them. He will treat them much like his own children, up to a point, and that's a good thing, but it also means that he'll come down on them. They won't like it, but having him wash their hands of them completely would be a lot worse, because if he got to that point, he'd be talking to Logan about an expulsion from the program.

Right isn't always easy

The discovery that Taylor(his ex) had been abusing their son had come as an incredible shock, and for Jackson, it had been the last straw. His marriage had been on the rocks for quite some time, but he'd been willing to hold it together for the kids until the moment that he learned that it wasn't for the kids at all. It wasn't all three of them that had been suffering, only his oldest -- his boy. Since the discovery and the divorce, in which he took all three children and threatened to put her behind bars, he and the kids have been struggling.

Since it happened so many years ago, the kids aren't aware of exactly what happened, or that their mother had come so close to dealing with some serious consequences. If there is one thing Jackson doesn't play around with, it's children's safety, especially his. He's struggled since the divorce to get the kids in order -- he can be both harsh and strict and it's sort of come to bite him with Owen -- who seems to feel like he can't talk to his father, let alone emote.

To this day he stands behind his reasons to divorce his ex, and while he's never divulged those reasons to the kids, he feels like he shouldn't have to. The fact that his and Owens relationship has suffered since, has him baffled, but he's attempted to follow the therapists advice to let him open up on his own time table.

Our relationship, our business

Jackson spent twenty years in the service, and it wasn't until recently that the don't ask/don't tell policy was lifted. At the time, he'd been married, and the truth is that he's actually bi-sexual, but with his past with his ex being what it is, he tends to lean toward men.

Neither he or Guy are all that comfortable coming out as a couple, and it's a sticky situation for everyone involved. He very much believes that their relationship with one another is their business, and there have been moments that were awkward for them, let alone the rest of the world.

Adjusting to a new life

Having been offered the title of Brigadier General was something that Jackson had spent his career working toward, but when the day came, he'd had to turn it down. Those sorts of titles always came with strings, and as much as he wanted it, he had kids going through some rough stuff that needed him. And so, he retired completely instead.

Adjusting to civilian life has been different, and he was thankful when he was able to find employment on Brook Haven Ranch. Guy had also offered him work, but he felt like Brook Haven was the right place, and was relieved when Guy understood.

About Jackson

Meet retired Colonel Dorsey, who spent over 20 years of his life in the marines and has come home to Blue Lake Montana to start over again. A fresh start seemed like the best option for both him and the kids, and he thought that the fresh air would do everybody some good. Since he's been in Blue Lake, he's gotten fairly comfortable. Most of his time is spent between Brook Haven and Guy Pike's ranch.

Every Sunday you will find him dressed in his best, with his three children in tow as they head to Sunday church. He also can be found taking the teenagers to church on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for Wednesday night services and Thursday youth groups. Church is pretty important to him -- "If we don't teach our children to follow Christ, the world will teach them not to" is his personal mantra, and one he lives by. He doesn't expect his family to be perfect, nor does he think they should be able to recite scripture for every life event, but Jack does believe that good does come in honoring God in the things that you do.

When he's not working the ranch, or otherwise occupied with family, one might find him at the town's hardware store, out at the sporting goods store, or hanging out with his family in town -- the Sheridans. For the most part, Jack is pretty busy guy, and he's not extroverted, no matter how social he might come across, he needs his alone time too. With that said, when he goes out with friends or family, he likes for it to count.

Platonic

Jack is a great guy. He's the sort of friend that's loyal and there for you through it all -- whether it's good, bad, or just plain ugly -- he will always have your back. People who are most likely to hit him off will be other service members, especially other Marines, and people who like the outdoors. These are people that he will relate with best. He will understand the hard working folks of Trader's Bend, and he's a huge supporter of Brook Haven and the work their doing with the kids in the program.

Romantic

Sorry. He's taken. He's in a complicated relationship with Guy Pike, that no one knows about. So it might be interesting if there were women interested in an unrequited love plot.

Antagonistic

Formidable. That's what he would seem to be to those who made him an enemy. He doesn't tend to make all that many of them because it's taxing to have people that you just can't see eye to eye with. To be honest, he'd rather avoid people who want to pick fights than start or finish them. Now, if approached and in a situation where he can't back down, he will put down his opponent, either physically or intellectually, so long as the situation called for it.

Familiar

Jack is a really hard dad. He loves his kids to pieces, but he's incredibly hard and strict with them. He doesn't put up with a lot of shenanigans, and when they get out of hand, he's been known to use corporal discipline -- that's just the way of it with him. He wants what's best for his family, and he's been trying for a while to do everything he can.

Other

The kids in his group are likely to get very similar reactions as his biological children do -- that of a harsh guy that will push them further than most of them have probably been pushed before. He doesn't accept failure, and defeat simply isn't an option. Giving up will never be tolerated, and if they try do it, they'll wish that they hadn't. He's a hard guy, but he does what he does because he cares, and no one wants him to no to, because when that point comes he will simply walk away.

Please do note that while he does use corporal punishment with his children, he won't use it on the students on the ranch (unless they are his children).

QUOTE
Your Character is sitting at a bar/tavern at the end of a long stressful day, the man beside them reeks of booze, the bartender tells them they have had enough for tonight, but he refuses to leave, and in his protest he knocks over your characters drink. What do they do?

The air was heavy, and the whole place smelled like cigarette smoke and alcohol. For some reason, that had always been a comforting aroma (though not necessarily pleasant) to Jack. "Hey Bill!" He knew the bartender on a personal basis, not because he was such a heavy drinker, but because they'd grown up together and had attended the same high school. Taking a seat at the bar, he ordered a whiskey -- it'd been a rough day, and taking a moment to come down from that was nice.

It only took a moment for him to notice to overly strong scent of alcohol coming off the individual next to him, and he sighed. This wasn't likely to end well. People who smelled that strong either wound up doing something stupid in the parking lot, deciding they could drive home on their own, fell face first on the ground before they could get out of the bar, or they started fights. Of course, that was just Jack's experience talking, not necessarily the facts.

Waving his friend over, he nodded his head toward the man sitting next to him, but when Bill just pursed his lips, Jack raised a brow. Cutting the guy off was the best thing for everyone, wasn't it?

"Hey, Sam, let's get you some coffee now, huh? I can get you a cup here, and then maybe Jack will walk you down to the diner for some more." That was a dirty trick, and both he and Bill knew it. Unwilling to just sit there quietly, he piped up. "Sure thing." But instead of responding reasonably, the drunk got irate and threw his arms, knocking Jack's whiskey off the bar and onto the ground.

He didn't wait, but got to his feet, standing over the other man, then raised a brow. "I believe he just cut you off. So, you can either take the coffee, leave respectfully, or you can go with the cops." If he called down to the station, someone would be over quickly -- probably before Sam could do much damage.

Enemies

Taylor Dorsey • ex-wife

Jackson and Terry do not speak to one another. He has custody of the kids, and he threatened to send her to prison for child abuse if she ever came near the kids again. Thanks to photographic evidence, and documented testimony from family friends that came to him concerned, he has enough to put her away for a long time should she choose to try and come after him or the kids. She got nothing in the divorce, and his last words on the subject were that she should be thankful for that. These two truly are enemies. He doesn't talk about her in front of the kids, and prefers to avoid the topic all together.

Lovers

Guy Pike • it's complicated

Guy and Jackson have been friends for a long time. He was buddies with Donny Sheridan, Guy's oldest brother(half), and things sort of just fell into place. At the core, they are friends and they also happen to have a very complicated relationship that they haven't revealed to the general public. They co-parent together, but Jack and his kids live in a separate house.

Grant Pike • step-son

Grant is a good kid -- not so much a kid anymore as a man, but it's hard for Jack to see it that way. There will be a day when the ranch is all Grant's, and so long as it's what the teen wants, then he's happy. Both Jack and Grant can be pretty busy, so other than when the family gets together for a big family event, or meals, Jack doesn't see too much of him.

Carter Pike •step-son

Carter has got some issues with aggression, and it's not something that has gone unnoticed by either Guy or Jack. Jack is determined to help, and to teach him to control that drive with something that doesn't involve bloodying someone's face, and consequences for if and when he does.

Noreen Dorsey • daughter

Noreen has always been quiet and more introverted than even he understands. She's always been the good girl, and he appreciates it. He can usually find her somewhere with her nose in a book, but he's always wondered what she's up to when he can't seem to find her. She's never really found her way into trouble, except for that one incident when she was in the sixth grade and decided to try her hand at skipping school and forged his signature -- it didn't go well. These two have an interesting dynamic.

Owen Dorsey • son

Jack and Owen's relationship is on the rocks, and the sad truth of it is that Jack didn't even realize it until recently. He's struggling with how best to to help his son, and how to demonstrate just how much he does love him. It's hard. Owen's a stubborn boy, and the fact of the matter is that his father is just as stubborn. Over the years, a number of wedges have been driven between them, and Jack doesn't always see things clearly. At the end of the day, Owen is Jack's boy- his pride and joy -- he wants things resolved.

Kennedy Pike • step-daughter

Eddy. He will never forget the time that he called her Kenny by accident and she laid into him, but what really got to him was that she'd managed to make her point while (mostly) being respectful. Jack really adores her, she's a sweet girl, and he can appreciate that at her core she's a good girl, and the kind of kid that he'd want his kids hanging out around, even pregnant. These two talk fairly regularly, both about the important stuff and the little things that don't really matter.

Wilson Pike • step-son

Will is a good kid, even if he has managed to find himself in more trouble than he could possibly have wanted to get himself into. Jack believes in him, but has mostly stepped back to let Guy deal with his youngest son, since he probably knows best. If Will needs someone to talk to, Jackson will always be there, and he'll point him in the direction of his father if or when something comes up that he needs to address with him.

Moira Dorsey • daughter

Moira is his youngest, and from the day that she was born, she has always been the loudest. While she rarely finds her way into trouble, she always manages to make her needs and wants known. Unfortunately for her, catering to the whims of the loudest has never been Jackson's way -- he's quick to shush her with a look, or threat. The fact that she doesn't want to live on a ranch, hasn't gone unnoticed or un-noted, but her father's view on that is that it's just it's too darn bad -- she'll get used to it.

Monty Sheridan •

Monty and Jack are friends, aside from being brothers-in-law. He met Monty through his brother, and they hit it off pretty easily. Similar interests and a career in the marines make bonding and understanding one another easy. He's there whenever the other man needs him, and on the short list of people that shook his hand just days after he came home. He's aware that Monty is struggling with PTSD, and has done his best and used his contacts to get him and Sera access to tools that might help.

Habits

No later than 6am

Jack doesn't sleep later than six in the morning. Ever. Typically, he wakes around 4am, at which point he takes a shower and goes for a run (no matter the season), then comes back and showers again. He doesn't ever sleep later than six.

Nice and Tidy

For Jack, everything has a place. He's a very tidy man, probably thanks to the military. He doesn't like it when things are out of place, and when they are moved, he likes it put back.

Tucked Corners

Before Jack gets on with his day, he make his bed to military standards.

Quirks

Watch tapping

Jack can't stand it when people are late. Even if they don't do it on purpose, he feels like it's a waste of his time to sit around waiting on another person. His agitation can be seen when he begins to tap his watch, as if it would make the other person suddenly appear.

Failure is not an option

Jack doesn't believe in failure, and he certainly doesn't tolerate it.

Is it broken? No? Get back to it.

If you don't have a have broken bone, or aren't bleeding by mass amounts, Jack will expect you to get back to what you were doing before. This means, if you fall off your horse, he'll want you to get back on, if you make a mistake on the obstacle course, either start where you left off or start over. If you fall, pick yourself back up. He doesn't coddle.

Hobbies

whittling

Jack typically has a project on him to work on, should he need a project. It's not something he makes a big deal of, but it's something he does, those that are a part of his life should not be surprised if he slips them a personalized gift from time to time, especially around gift giving holidays or on big occasions.

outdoor sports

Fishing. Camping. Hiking. Swimming. Canoeing. White water rafting. If it's outdoors, Jack will like it. He loves to be able to get away.

Pizza making

Jack loves to make home made pizza. He doesn't do it a lot, but it's something that he enjoys doing and experimenting with.

Skills

Spanish • fluent

It seemed like a good idea to study the language when he'd been in college, and while it's not the most useful language that he knows, it's the only one that he's fluent in.

survival skills • advanced

Sometimes survival skills are a necessity. It will never hurt to have them, and they've helped him out more than a time or two.

boat making • advanced

Boat making was a hobby he took up while he was in the military because it was project that he could always come home to and it would exactly the way that he'd left it. He loves working with wood, and it's a bigger project than something that you might whittle.

Interests

cars

Jack loves cars, and taking care of them is part of owning one. He loves to get under the hood of a car and fix something, or maybe just tune it up.

football

Back in high school Jack used to play, now he just watches the professionals and sometimes the high school kids too.

Desired Plots

Paycheck Deduction Donation Option

Jack is a smart guy, and with Simon making a big stink about the ranch profiting, he'd like to make a suggestion to the owners about allowing the staff to donate a portion of their paychecks to ranch. It could be as little as one percent, or as much as any other amount they wished, but it might allow for opportunities for things to add up. Most of the people who work there don't have a lot to offer, but even little amounts add up.

Maybe I was wrong

Jack has been really hard on his kids, Owen in particular, and he's going to need to come to that conclusion so that he can begin to repair his relationship with his son.

Service animal

Jack believes in the use and power of service dogs. I'd love it if there was a student or two that he could help by being able to provide them with a much needed service dog. The need would have to be apparent, but he'd love to be able to help a kid or two at the ranch.

Leader
Annie & Jack
I literally cannot decide how these two are going to get along. Sorry, Hubs was talking about poker and sapping a lot of my energy with his animation. On the one hand, Annie's more peaceful than Jack is in my experience with Jack. On the other hand, she also believes that there's no such thing as "can't" so in some ways she might wind up being harder than he is. If you don't put all of your effort into it and you insist on not being capable of something, she's going to want the same kind of proof that he does, or the students are going to do it. This is what makes the Wellwader group so competitive (even in David's absence). We could consider planning an event for their group? I think there are three students in it right now.

Grace was sent to Brook Haven Ranch by her parents, who felt that she was defiant, disobedient, and obstinate at home. More than they wanted to help her, they wanted her out of their hair. She frustrated them to no end with her vegetarian lifestyle, her refusal to participate in the slaughter of animals on their homestead, and failed to produce even the "simplest" of baked goods to sell at the market. In many ways, Grace was a liability to her parents, and so they found the most convenient way to get her out of their hair: They enrolled her at Brook Haven Ranch.

It broke Grace's heart. A good girl who has always done her best to please her parents, she's struggled throughout her entire lifetime to do what they wanted of her. On the ranch she has been obedient, considerate, polite, and compassionate with her peers. She's learned to ride quickly, is excellent with horses, and she has gone the distance to help other students to learn how to make the most of their experience on the ranch as well. Helpful and kind, she's known as someone who is a friend to everyone.

Grace is also a strange person. She belongs to a family of witches who have practiced witchcraft for many generations, and her beliefs, therefore, are different from most other students on the ranch. This makes her an easy target for bullying by some of the pushier students on the ranch, but she's always tolerated bullying with a brave face.

This is the first time that Grace has been in school, having been previously home schooled, and so she's still adjusting to the academics and the schedule for education, since she's more accustomed to working every day of the year without much of a break.

Now her home relationships are in turmoil, and it's tough for Grace since her parents and sisters live in Trader's Bend. She's not sure whether they're ever going to come to see her on the visitation days, and she's trying hard not to care.

Grace & Jack
Sooo.... Jack reminds me sometimes of a more well-meaning (and male) Saren. With Owen, he's as hard as Saren is with Grace, often without regard for the way that his son is feeling. Of course Owen's more stoic about things and he doesn't show how it's affecting him while Grace does. I've always felt like Grace could be a linchpin in helping Jack to understand Owen better. Since Owen's not in play, I'm not in any kind of a rush on this, but if you see where this is going, what do you think?

When people look at Nick, they tend to see a big dumb bully. For all most people experience of him, they might as well be right. At heart, Nick is a smart, sensitive kid who’s learned to act tough because it keeps him safe, but that’s buried deep enough that plenty of people will never encounter that side of him.

Jack & Nathaniel
TW: Domestic violence references, bullying How did I forget to ship with Jackson before? I'm so sorry. Jack reminds Nick of his father, and that means Nick desperately wants Jack's respect. That has some good side effects: he works hard and accepts being pushed hard without a complaint. He's serious about the Wellwaders as a group; he does his share and then some of group activities, and while he's not always nice to the others, he's protective when someone from another group gives them any trouble. One way that's going to come out is that Nick is going to ask Jack about the marines, and he's definitely going to talk about how he intends to join the military once he graduates, and basically backhandedly try to get Jack to encourage him to try join the marines and hope that Jack will be impressed with him trying to do that. (This is true basically regardless of how Jack actually feels about students joining the military.) One thing that's going on is that Nick does some pushing the of the other Wellwader's behind Jack's back. There was an example mentioned in a thread that I think is typical: one of the other Wellwader boys was slow getting up, so Nick (and someone else) dragged him out of bit and tossed him in the shower to get him up so they wouldn't be late. The thing is, Nick thinks he's kind of doing on Jack's behalf - that he's pushing around the other Wellwaders in ways that Jack isn't allowed to in order to keep their team group achieving what they're supposed to. I don't know how Jack will respond when he inevitably finds out. Nick will be crushed - in a good way for his development - to find out that Jack isn't okay with that. My hope is that learning about that could be good for Jack, too - that seeing just how much Nick has misunderstood what Jack was trying to teach with his strictness will suggest that Own is also not hearing the thing Jack thinks he's conveying. I guess the other thing I should point out is that Nick is eventually going to start a physical fight with Jack. This is so true that, at some level, Nick knows it. Jack might, too. It's a major step in Nick's arc, but so routine that it may worth skipping straight to threading the aftermath when it finally happens.

Everett & Jack
What really interests me about these two is the fact that Jack has so much struggle at home with his own kid because Owen masks what's really going on with him, and Everett's methods of masking just do not work, and therefore Jack is more apt to notice what's going on with him than he would with Owen at home. It amuses me because in some ways they're similar: Both athletes who act out in order to mask their hurt. The difference is that while Owen appears to be coping, there's no question that Everett is not. I'm not sure how they would actually interact with one another though, to be fair. There's always the obvious -- Everett getting into trouble over something -- but I feel so weird moving on with his story before he's bumped into Keith or Cade.

Dawn & Jack
This could really go one of two ways, very good or very bad. Seeing as he is Dawn's direct group supervisor, I'm hoping we find out its the earlier of the two. Dawn is a softy, and although she deals with very hard things often in her work, she tends to lean maternal when working though struggles and problems. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body, and hardly ever raises her voice unless she's very excited and animated about something. I would assume that the level of respect Jack demands just by being will rub Dawn the wrong way in the beginning, but if she can crack him just the slightest bit in their first few meetings and see that he is a very genuine guy, I'm sure they'll be the best of buds. I'd love to see them interact in a neutral setting to start them off right, but if we want to try another direction - seeing Jack discipline a ranch kid or have a stern talking with a ranch kid would definitely cause Dawn to start off on not the best footing with her new boss.

"With all that said, I think a thread would be fun. Since there aren't any students, maybe Dawn could walk in on him smacking one of his own children (he's got .... 3 bio kids, his guy has 4, and their girl has 8 [7 under their roof with the others], so all together that's 14 kids and three parents) in the back of the head and coming down on him for being lazy or something like that. It wouldn't be anything overly rough, but a quick, obviously not thought out, correction that I think could lead to a neat thread between Dawn and Jack." We should for sure do this thread! If you could start that would be good. Then I'll have context for Dawn to walk in on.
