Healing Horses & Troubled Teens since 1995
Not every teenager has the benefit of growing up in a loving, happy home. Some are victims of abuse, neglect, a system that shuffles them from foster home to foster home. Brook Haven Ranch was established in 1995 as a refuge for abused and neglected horses -- and teenagers who needed a second chance in life and the opportunity to become something more than society expects of them.

When people look at Nick, they tend to see a big dumb bully. For all most people experience of him, they might as well be right. At heart, Nick is a smart, sensitive kid who’s learned to act tough because it keeps him safe, but that’s buried deep enough that plenty of people will never encounter that side of him.

Kansas

Nick doesn't remember his mother. She never really recovered from his birth - the cancer was discovered during her pregnancy, and she went smoothly to being tired from the aftermath of the pregnancy to being tired from the chemotherapy. She made it a bit more than two years before finally succumbing.

For the first few years, Nick, and to some extent his older sisters, were mostly raised by their mother's parents, moving back and forth between the small house they lived in and his father's residence on the military base an hour away.

Tennessee

When Nick was four, though, his father was transferred to Ford Cambell Tennessee, leaving the man with sole custody of the three children. Nick's oldest sister, Therese - herself only nine - ended up keeping the household running.

Nick's father, Mark, had always had a problem with alcohol, and it became more severe now that he was solely responsible for the family. The kids quickly found the best places in the house to hide from him when he was in a rage. Nick and his middle sister, in particular, often sold out each other's hiding places, trying to direct their father's anger towards each other.

Once he entered school, reading quickly became Nick's refuge. HIs most vivd memories of the period are of hiding behind some piece of furniture, squinting to read in the dim light, while his father stormed around the house. His taste ran to high fantasy, particularly the books about boys escaping their lives to become heroes in some other world. He quickly learned to hide his reading from his father, who felt that it wasn't "manly enough" for his son.

He also quickly learned to hide his love of books at school, too. He managed to avoid getting grouped with the kids who got bullied the most, but he was a small boy with a big mouth who couldn't completely avoid the attention of the bullies in his class.

Georgia, early years

Shortly after Nick turned nine, his father was transferred again, to Fort Benning in Georgia. With the added stress of the move, his relationship with his father deteriorated further, culminating in a night when his father found him hiding with a book, dragged him out of his hiding place, and hurled him against a wall. Nick had to be rushed to the hospital, and the social worker saw through both Nick's lies about what had happened and removed him from the house while she sorted out what was going on.

Nick was temporarily placed in a foster home in the area. Once the school year ended, his foster parents both worked and provided little supervision, so he found himself at loose ends with the household's other foster kid, an eleven year old girl named Leila. Leila wanted to be an actress, and had the idea that they could record videos, hoping that posting them online would get her the attention and fame she wanted. Nick loved the idea, mostly because he was excited about getting to write the scripts.

Leila, Nick learned, already had an existing fanbase - from the videos she'd made with her father, she told Nick - who turned out to be glad Leila was recording videos again, but were full of suggestions they wanted for future videos. Eager to please their fans - and not understanding the implications - Leila and Nick began incorporating their suggestions. The videos escalated through most of the summer until an accident while recording one of their videos left Leila bleeding. Afraid to call their foster parents or 911, they went online and asked their fans for help. Desperate, they gave out their address to a nearby fan who was a doctor. He showed up at the house an hour later, cleaned and bandaged Leila's wound, and then raped her.

After the doctor left, Nick called the police over Leila's objections. Naturally, both kids were removed from the foster home, and the FBI intervened, successfully tracking down a number of their fans, including the doctor. The agent in charge of the investigation fostered and later adopted Leila. Nick was returned to his family: his father had joined AA and was making progress in an anger management class.

Nick was unhappy about being sent back home. For all the strangeness, and the terrifying end, of his time in foster care, he'd had a breath of freedom only to get sent back. Watching his father's half-controlled anger only made him angry, and he needed and mocked his father, often provoking him to violence against Nick or his sisters, though never severely enough to get the attention of the foster care system again.

Nick's growth spurt hit the summer he was eleven. He arrived to seventh grade suddenly the biggest boy in the class, inches taller than any of the other boys. Suddenly the kids he'd been scared of before were scared of him. Middle school was a great time to be a bully; he still had the big mouth that had gotten him in trouble before, and middle school students were volatile. He became adept at provoking other kids into starting fights, and then finishing them, hard. He'd had a decent reputation with his teachers, making it easier to convince them that, despite his size, Nick couldn't be the aggressor.

Kansas, again

Right before Nick started high school, his father was transferred back to Fort Riley, where he'd been born. His father, who'd been drinking on and off all along, fell back into old habits and started drinking more extensively. After a fight with their father that left Clara with a dislocated shoulder, she snuck off and made it to their grandparents near Topeka, who reached an agreement for her to live with them until she graduated high school.

Meanwhile, Nick started getting in trouble, first at school, mostly for bullying or cutting class, though more than once for talking back to teachers as well, and then with the police, for drinking, vandalism, and then a minor theft.

The next year, Therese finished community college and promptly moved to Topeka to be near Clara, leaving Nick alone with his father. Nick started fighting back when his father got violent, and while his father was still bigger, Nick was close enough to put up a real fight. There was plenty for them to fight about, but it was the day Nick got dragged home by a cop, drunk on beer stolen from his father, that brought things to a head. After a particularly brutal fight, Nick followed his sister's lead and ran away to his grandparents, expecting them to take him in like they had Clara.

His grandparents weren't so excited by the idea. They weren't so happy about having Clara living with them, and two teenagers was more than they could handle. They also had some idea the sort of trouble Nick had been getting in, and weren't sure they could handle him. Without consulting with Nick, his grandmother managed to persuade both his father and the prosecutor to go along with a different plan: his grandparents and father would split the cost of sending Nick to a school they'd heard about in Montana, which would get Nick away from his father, out of the local cop's hair, and maybe do him so good as well.

Ringleading

Nick is a bully, and he's pretty good at both bullying people and at getting away with it. It's going to take a while, but eventually it'll catch up with him. I expect that eventually, finally, people will shut him down hard enough that he can't just move on to the next victim. At that point he'll have to actually figure out how to interact with other kids other than by constantly playing power games.

The Pen is Mightier

Nick is going to be a writer. He doesn't know it yet, and right now he's still carrying around his father's disdain for anything other than the military and terrified of not being good enough to make it. But eventually, with some help, he'll realize that it's what he really wants to do, and that it's worth the risk.

Coming to Terms

Nick is completely in denial that he's traumatized by what happened with Leila, and that it's seriously impacting his ability to have a functioning relationship. Right now he doesn't even mention that it happened, telling himself that it wasn't important (so unimportant that he's not even willing to mention it out loud...). But, eventually, he'll let some details about it slip, part of him hoping that people will push him to process it, because he doesn't know how to make himself try to deal with it on his own.

About Nick

When people look at Nick, they tend to see a big dumb bully. For all most people experience of him, they might as well be right. At heart, Nick is a smart, sensitive kid who’s learned to act tough because it keeps him safe, but that’s buried deep enough that plenty of people will never encounter that side of him.

His mother died when Nick was very young, and as he grew up, his father was entering a spiral of increasing dependence on alcohol and violence towards Nick and Nick's sisters. After Nick's growth spurt hit, he switched from hiding to acting out, first against his father, and then other kids and his teachers. Over the course of his first two years of high school, he began escalating from acting out in class and bullying to getting caught by police trespassing with alcohol. His father and grandparents scraped together the money to send him to Brook Haven one step ahead of more serious juvenile charges.

Nick is going to be quick to establish a place for himself at Brook Haven, finding friends he can hang out with and the staff who will cut a little slack about his big mouth because he does his chores and homework, and pushes the kids around him to do the same.

Platonic

The trick to getting along with Nick is respect. Either he respects you, or you respect him. Most of his friends tend to be other "tough kids": people Nick respects enough that he doesn't try to push them around.

Nick usually isn't someone for deep personal conversation. Most of Nick's friendships are pretty casual: people he likes to hang out with and chat casually, or play poker with, or a sport. Some of the people he considers friends are people he barely talks to, just nods at when they pass in a hallway. But the essence of friendship, for Nick, is having each other's back. Anyone he considers a friend, he'll be there for when things get tough, and he expects the same in return.

With people who Nick doesn't see as tough, he'll sometimes take a liking to people who treat him with sufficient respect. He sometimes takes someone under his wing, giving them some protection from other kids, and usually encouraging them to be tougher. With the right person, he might even try to help teach them how to be a bully.

Nick has another kind of friend as well. Once in a while, Nick ends up opening up to someone in a liminal moment - while drinking, or running into someone alone while in a strange mood at twilight, or in a sudden moment of connection about a book. After that, he ends up with an awkward half-friendship, cold to them in public but warm and friendly in private, willing to help them out or protect them from other bullies, but only with a veneer of detachment.

Romantic

Nick isn't prepared to have a sustained relationship right now. He's had a couple quick flings with girls, and fooled around with a couple boys, but the moment there's any hint of something serious, he dumps the whole thing immediately.

He can't get intimate with someone without feeling vulnerable, and he doesn't like feeling vulnerable. He's never had a stable romantic relationship, and wouldn't know how. Any relationships he has right now are likely to go the same was his previous ones have gone: Nick is mostly interested in having sex, after that happens he's suddenly tender and open for a few hours, and after that he avoids and ignores the other person.

The most likely short-term relationships would be with someone (of any gender) who Nick ends up being protective of, and increasingly tender towards, until suddenly getting cold and distant and losing all interest.

The most likely long-term relationship right now would be with someone who Nick views as more of an equal, and would still be an awkward, on-again off-again thing, with periods of long conversations and getting to know each other punctuating long gaps of fighting or simply not speaking.

Antagonistic

Nick's obvious enemies are the kids he bullies. He rarely escalates to actually attacking people himself. His preferred approach is baiting, teasing, looking for sensitive things to make fun of, using his size to make people feel threatened and trapped, while trying to provoke them into actually starting a fight, which he can usually win. He'll potentially target anyone he thinks is vulnerable, usually probing around with insults and comments until he finds one that hits a nerve.

(While Nick goes after characters vulnerabilities, and can be racist, homophobic, and transphobic, I don't want any players to be uncomfortable threading with him, and I'll make sure Nick respects any boundaries that would make other players uncomfortable.)

Familiar

Nick has a very difficult relationship with his family. He's internalized a lot of his father's ideas, but genuinely hates the man personally; one of the reasons he's committed to staying at Brook Haven is that he suspects that if he goes back home, he'll end up provoking his father until one of them accidentally maims or kills the other. His relationship with his sisters is more complicated, torn between the camaraderie of surviving their household and envy that they escaped before him. He had fond memories of his grandparents, but resents that they took in his sister but sent him to Brook Haven.

Other

Undoubtedly there are some staff members who will have a problem with Nick. He talks back, and makes it very clear which staff members he respects and which he doesn't. And, of course, there's the bullying.

On the other hand, he's hard-working and responsible. He gets in trouble like any of the other teens, but he takes punishments without complaint or argument. He does his chores, and he pushes other students to do theirs.

Most of all, Nick needs a mentor who will realize that he's smarter than he lets on, and that he wants to join the military for all the wrong reasons; someone who can push him to actually pursue being a writer.

First Impressions

The first thing people notice about Nick is that he's big. He's only among the tallest boys his age, but he's also broad-shouldered, which makes him look bigger than his raw height suggests. It's easy to assume that Nick is a big, dumb bully, and he encourages that assumption. He's confident, he walks around like he owns whatever space he's in, and he doesn't particularly respect other people's space.

People usually don't like Nick when they first meet him, but people often don't want to start conflict him, so some people try to ignore his provocations and make nice him, hoping - often correctly - that he won't push them further as long as they make a show of respect.

Stranger Impressions

If people have heard about Nick before meeting him, it's probably not anything good. He's trouble, he's mean, he's a bully. In writing - for an application, or in an online interaction - though, Nick comes across a bit better. He's more polished than his attitude in person would suggest, and his sense of humor shines through without the meanness it's usually wrapped in. When he really wants, he can sell himself in writing as a decent kid trying to set himself right after a difficult life.

Friendly Impressions

With his friends, Nick is warm, full of jokes and camaraderie. He's also very competitive, often proposing to "make an activity interesting" by turning it into a race or a challenge. He tries hard to win, but can accept a loss graciously.

There are a few friends Nick isn't willing to admit to. Towards them, in public, he's cold and distant, but also protective: if he see's them in trouble, he'll find a way to help, though often a way that doesn't require him to admit he actually likes them.

Familiar Impressions

Nick fights with and openly disrespects his family, and it's made it hard for any of them to stay that close to him. They know where his anger comes from, and some of them try to hold on to sympathy for the quiet boy he used to be, it's gotten difficult for some of them to put up with him.

Rival Impressions

Nick is a fierce, but surprisingly fair-minded, competitor. His rivals are unlikely to be surprised that he puts a lot of effort in, but may be more surprised that he has a real sense of fair play that rarely shows outside of a competition.

The most likely rivals are people who Nick tries and fails to bully: people who blow off his attempts to intimidate him, and then try to prove that they're better than him at something and discover that there is more to Nick than just his big mean guy persona.

Enemy Impressions

Most of Nick's enemies are the kids he picks on. They probably see him as dangerous and cruel, someone who's constantly watching them for a sign of weakness that he can exploit.

The other group of enemies are the people who try to get in the way of his bullying. Some them see how petty he can be, how much he likes picking on kids weaker than him because he's so afraid of being weak himself.

Authority Impressions

To people in authority, Nick can often come across as a hard-working, reliable kid who has a big mouth and some trouble being respectful, but is actually trying to do well and mostly succeeding. Sure, he can be a bit tough on other kids, but he's good at hiding the worst of his bullying, and coming across

With people in authority Nick doesn't respect, though, the attitude and the snide comments come out in force. And a few people see just how cruel he really is when he can be.

Coworker/Partner Impressions

Coworkers will find that Nick is someone who can be counted on to do his part, and has zero tolerance for people who don't do the same. He's not a gossip, and he doesn't generate much gossip about himself, but he's a risky person to owe a favor to, because once he has leverage on someone, he's likely to push it as hard as he can.

Lover Impressions

Someone who manages to get really close to Nick will see how much Nick is struggling to channel in ways that are acceptably "manly" by the standards he was raised with. That's not something Nick is prepared to face about himself, so it's likely to be someone else who realizes that before he does.

Self-Impressions

Nick is trying very, very hard to bury the weak, vulnerable kid he remembers being, because he knows that that's really who he is, and all the rest is a big show to protect that. He desperately wants to prove to himself, and his father, that he's tough, to a degree that borders on the self-destructive. He's constantly trying to win, at whatever he's doing, by whatever standard he defines winning at the moment, hoping in vain that it'll help fill the gaping hole where his self-esteem should be.

Post-Mortem Impressions

Right now most people would look back on Nick's life with disappointment. More people than he realizes would grieve his death, but there's no one in his life right now who'd be sad for the person he's being right now: only people who would grieve for the person he might have been, if his life had gone differently, and people who would grieve for the person he might have grown into, if he'd had a chance.

Mun Impressions

Nick is a recurring character I've used in a number of places over several years. This version came out of thinking about the nature of villains, and especially bullying, at Brook Haven. Obviously a lot of the teens at Brook Haven act out in ways that hurt some of the other teens, and I think that's an important dynamic. But even when they're acting out in ways that cause damage, the "camera" - the focus given by the way the thread is written - is usually very sympathetic. That's generally how it should be, because the teens are fundamentally sympathetic. But when there's a clear victim, that can pull focus from the camera fully sympathizing with that victim.

I wanted a character who I was comfortable having in threads where he's cast as an unambiguous villain: someone I was willing to put in a thread and have the writing clearly condemn their actions and exclusively sympathize with the victim. But I don't actually think that any of the teens at Brook Haven are truly villains, and wouldn't be comfortable (or enjoy) portraying someone who was. Nick strikes that balance for me: I have no qualms about portraying the way he treats people as unambiguously awful, because it is, and I don't feel a need to remind myself and the reader that he's acting out from his own damage to justify or excuse it; but I think his story believes that in the long run he's a better person than his current actions show, so I don't feel like I'm forgetting that he deserves sympathy too.

One of the reasons I enjoy Nick is that he hits on a couple of my favorite themes. One is bullying, and especially the complicated social systems that make bullying work: the way Nick is good at getting adults on his side and being a "pro-social" bully, because he's willing to turn his aggression to accomplishing results that the adults around him want. Also, like a lot of my characters, Nick is struggling with expectations about what it means to be a man which he isn't actually able to satisfy, and is hurting himself trying to.

Friends

Leila

Nick and Leila briefly lived in the same foster home one summer when Nick was nine and Leila was eleven. Leila ended up getting adopted, while Nick was sent back to his family, and they've stayed in touch to a limited extent since then, but Nick to some degree resents Leila for moving to a better situation when he didn't.

Family

Mark Fisher • Father

Nick and his father don't get along, and Nick wouldn't mind if he never sees the man again. When Nick was living with him, the two argued and fought constantly.

Even so, much of Nick's view of the world is shaped by his father's view, and proving to his father, perhaps from a distance, that he's tough is still a major motivation for Nick.

Clara Fisher • Sister

Clara is the younger of his two sisters, two years older than him. Their relationship is fraught, especially because of the years they spent trying to direct their father's anger at each other while avoiding it themselves.

Therese Fisher • Sister

Therese is Nick's older sister, five years older than him. For a number of years, despite still being in elementary school, Therese ended up responsible for making sure cooking and cleaning happened in the house, since their father wasn't up to it. Their relationship has varied over the years. In the early years in Tennessee they were quite close, but as Nick got older - especially when he came back from his summer in foster care - he ended up taking out a lot of his anger on her. For the last couple years they've been getting along better, though Nick resented her decision to move away to where Clara lived, leaving him behind.

Diane Welch • Grandmother

Nick's grandmother raised him until he was four, and remains the adult he has the most positive relationship with. It's taken a hit recently because she strongly disapproves of the trouble he's been getting in at school, and hasn't hesitated to tell him that. She's also the person responsible for working out the arrangement for Nick to attend Brook Haven.

Habits

Writing

Nick secretly wants to write his own fantasy novel. He's been working on ideas for it for about six years. He keeps all the details in his head, but often writes out ideas or draws maps on paper in his spare time when he can, and then destroys the written record after he's worked out whatever he was trying to figure out.

Slow Morning

It takes Nick a while to get going in the morning. For the first hour after he gets up, he's groggy and easily confused. He usually tries to avoid interacting with people during that time, and will try to ignore anyone who tries to interact with him.

Clean

Nick doesn't mind getting dirty, but when he does clean up - showering or just washing his hands, he's very thorough, occasionally annoying other people with how long he takes.

Quirks

Standing Still

Nick isn't much of a fidgeter. When he's not doing something, he tends to stand or sit quite still, looking at whatever he's looking at. Sometimes he just looks very calm, but when he does it while staring right at someone, it can be a bit unsettling.

Expressive Eyebrows

Nick expresses more with his eyebrows, and less with his eyes, than most people. He almost always has his eyes a bit narrowed, like he's glaring at people, no matter what he's thinking, but his eyebrows move somewhat separately and move up and down when he's reacting to people.

Shifty Accent

Nick's childhood took him across much of the country, and exposed him to a lot of different American accents. His own accent is mostly midlands (the thing people tend to refer to as unaccented American English) with some southern influences. The balance between the two varies, though, depending on what he's saying and his mood. Usually the more annoyed or sarcastic he is, the more southern he sounds.

Hobbies

Reading

Nick remains, secretly, an aficionado of fiction books, primarily fantasy novels of all stripes. Nothing would make him happier than a free weekend and a good epic trilogy to read. This goes against his image, so he's quite secretive about it. Much as he enjoys reading, he'll pass up a lot of opportunities rather than risk getting caught.

Poker

More respectably, Nick enjoys poker. He's a respectable but unexceptional player: he's good at bluffing and reading people (which is what he really likes about the key anyway), but hasn't focused enough to get good at counting cards and estimating probabilities. He prefers, of course, the thrill of gambling for real money, but he'll play (with some complaints) just for fun when gambling's out of the question.

YouTube

Although Nick's interest in being a youtube star is long gone, he's still intrigued by the genre, and there are about two dozen vloggers he follows regularly, plus a number more he watches less regularly. He comments extensively, mostly insulting people, but he does understand the medium well enough to occasionally offer helpful advice.

Camping

Skills

Baseball • Good

Writing • Good

Driving • Okay

No, he doesn't have a license.

Interests

Baseball

While Nick likes many sport, Baseball is his favorite, and the Atlanta Braves are his preferred team. His fairly serious about rooting for the Braves, and now that he's moved away from their home territory, has even gotten into fights about it.

Every fantasy series ever

Rap

Nick likes a lot of music, but his official favorite genre is rap (mostly because it pisses off his father).

Desired Plots

Bully in Training

It would be interesting if Nick takes a more timid boy under his wing and encourages the boy to flourish...by joining Nick's crew of bullies.

Writer at Heart

Ultimately, Nick needs to realize that he wants to be a writer. Along the way, it would be nice to find a friend to share his secret love of books with (who's willing to remain friends despite the way Nick treats them in public, but doesn't have to like it). He'll also eventually need someone to help him realize that he could first go to college and later become a writer, since he doesn't even think of it as an option.

End of an Era

Nick should get a good run of being a bully, but eventually I'd like to see some of the other teens work together to force him to stop.

Rachel came to Brook Haven on a referral from her brother. She served eighteen months in juvenile detention and upon her release, her parents relinquished their parental rights to her entirely. Her life looks like one bad decision that influenced the everything, but the truth is that she's made a lot of mistakes, from having a baby at the age of twelve to holding up a liquor store when she was barely fifteen. At the end of the day, what she wanted the most was her parents' attention, and they were never capable of giving her that.

The ranch only knows part of the truth about Rachel; That she was arrested for holding up a liquor store, that she was difficult in juvy, that she was prone to fights with other inmates, that she was difficult to control (or just plain "difficult"). Her parents and the authorities never revealed the truth of her pregnancy or the child she was forced to give up for adoption, the circumstances of her family or the fact that her parents didn't treat her very well.

She's come to Brook Haven Ranch with no hope or expectations of something good coming of her experience with juvenile detention. Her natural reaction is to buck the system and to fight back, but Rachel is exhausted by her experiences and all she wants is a better life for herself.

A tried and true "horse girl," this is exactly the right place for Rachel, who has missed being around horses while she was in juvy. Their presence has surprised her, and they've given her an outlet for a lot of what's going on inside of her (because despite it all, she's less angry and more hurt than most people seem to realize).

Rachel & Nick
I've been looking forward to doing this plot since I found out that I was doing Rachel first and you were doing Nick first.

Obviously they're in two different groups, so they are going to be challenged to find time to spend together. A lot of Rachel's free time is taken up between the Mustang Challenge and her extra schooling with Tony, and what's left she will likely want to spend in the library. I figured that's how they would probably run into one another. There's a small but highly functional library on the upper level of the main lodge, where students can hang out, grab a book to read, and check one out. It's an honor system, in part in order to allow Nick some opportunities to be a little weird about his books, but Rachel for the most part reads there in an oversized arm chair and mostly young adult novels. Her favorite is (lol) Twilight.

The two of them have a good number of similarities between them though, and I thought that you might like to play off of those. Both come from careless family backgrounds, and both had a father with a drug problem (although obviously in Nick's case the drug was alcohol). I could see them being a tremendous support for one another because of this, especially considering that Rachel isn't the sort of person who makes friends easily, and she'll be relying heavily on the adults to take care of her social needs. Thank goodness an INFJ doesn't need a lot of social contact to feel well, though she can be a bit clingy as a friend.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, Ben! I've been dealing with being sick by knitting and playing TS4 and it helps me to keep it together but it's been too long. Ugh. Anyway, I'm pretty excited about these two because I can see so much potential for them. Since Rachel's not really doing the "romance" thing right now I feel like there's the possibility of a no-pressure friendship, even if Rachel can get a bit clingy and stick closely to her friends. She hasn't had a lot of them in the years that I've been playing her and Nick is so close a match to what she needs that it blows my mind. Really. I need to bump Toby up on my make list so that Rachel at least has one of my own kids to be friends with. Stupid, I know. Anyway, I'm happy with the suggestion of her commenting on the book that he's picked up. The question then becomes "which one?" What would he read that's in her area of interest, which is primarily not fantasy novels? The only one that comes immediately to mind is (ironically) The Hunger Games (ironic because Nick's face claim starred in the first movie as Cato). It's not exactly a "girly" book and Nick could potentially appreciate it as science fiction, though of course it's more of a dystopian novel than science fiction. I don't know if it would be up his alley, but if that works, let me know. I definitely know enough about the book to play Rachel through this kind of scenario, and books are one quick way to get her attention -- and his. Obviously we both need to get through admits before we can move forward with these threads, but I'm going to add Nick under Rachel's friendships -- tentatively -- for now. How does that sound?

Logan is the current owner of Brook Haven Ranch, and the founder of its program for troubled teens. A former troubled kid himself, he came to the ranch addicted to cocaine, unable to find his way, and angry with his biological parents for giving up on him. He can relate to the kids on the ranch, from the struggle with behavioral trouble to the frequent struggle with drugs, and he knows what it's like to be the child of parents who gave up on him.

He has a lot to give to the teens at Brook Haven Ranch, and he's opened the ranch up to these kids so that they can grow into people who are able to take care of themselves and contribute to society. His program is one that focuses on making sure that the students learn how to be their best selves, while increasing their confidence and their trust in themselves and the people around them.

Logan is the father figure of the ranch. He can be strict with the students, but only because he knows what it's like to be one of them, and he does his best to provide them with the discipline and structure that they need while also making sure that the teens on the ranch know that they have people who care about them and that there will always be a place for them whenever they need it.

Addiction has a big place in Logan's life, and he recognizes that he's either in recovery or in relapse. Right now he's in relapse, and attempting to hide it from his wife, his daughter, his parents, his brothers, and his sister. When they find out, there's sure to be some drama for Logan, who has to get back on the wagon or risk losing everything that he's build on the ranch.

When it comes down to it, Logan will do anything necessary to help the teenagers that the ranch serves, even if it involves a personal risk or giving up something to save those kids. They come before himself, and when push comes to shove, hard decisions will be made in favor of the troubled teens program, no matter what it means for Logan.

Logan's the type of person who practically has x-ray vision. Nick's going to wind up being pretty transparent for Logan, who won't buy into his "good kid" act in the slightest. This probably sounds pretty dull to you at first because of the obvious fact that there's a reason that Nick's a manipulator, and it's not much fun if there's not somebody available for him to manipulate, but just think of the chaos when Logan tells Nicks' leaders (Jack Dorsey and Ally Bennett) to keep a close eye on him and they report back nothing but a well-behaved kid. In Logan's current situation (relapse), this is going to put a particular strain on him in his relationships with some of his staff, and IMO, that's a pretty strong over-arching plot line for the two of them. Since they're going to wind up having the admit initially, I think that I'd prefer to wait and find out how they interact with one another before we try to move forward with plotting out any future threads. It seems that the nature of their overall plot is probably going to be more one that focuses on the action that takes place around them more than the action that takes place between them, unless you have a specific scenario you'd like to play through with Logan?

Nearly two years ago, the barn that housed Bella's five horses burned to the ground. The fire was set by carelessness during one of her twin sister Ronnie's wild drinking parties. Ronnie has always kept the wrong sort of friends while Bella stayed in her hole and wrote in her journal or drew in her notebooks. While both girls were equally abused by their stepfather, they responded differently to the abuse.

And they responded differently to the fire as well. Two of Ronnie's horses made it out of the fire, but none of Bella's did, and though Ronnie's horses have since been sold by their stepfather as retribution for what she did (and because Ronnie refused to interact with them after the fire), Bella suffers the loss of her animals acutely. She saw them die, and she cannot imagine anything worse than that.

Half of Bella's body -- as is Ronnie's -- is covered with burn scars acquired when she struggled to pull her horses out of the blaze. The scars have made Bella self-conscious to the point of aggression. She won't allow people to get close to her and sometimes refuses to participate in group activities as a result of the scars.

It's making a lot of trouble for the people on the ranch, and the fact that Bella's been put into the group that her brother leads hasn't made things any easier on her. Nate's been strict and demanding with her, with high expectations of excellence when all she wants is to lay in bed all day.

The last thing that she wants is to bond with another horse. It's too difficult when she loses them. But the ranch has given her a "special" horse, a damaged thoroughbred that some have said only a real horse whisperer can handle. Will a broken girl be able to heal a broken horse?

Bella & Nick
TW: Eating Disorders (Bulimia)

I really think that Bella's the type of person who Nick is going to see as being an easy target. She's introverted, lonely, and prefers to spend her time by herself instead of being around other people. She doesn't behave well and drives the staff crazy. She doesn't eat well, and the purging makes her a very easy target for bullies.

You're in sort of a tough situation with Nick in that there are a lot of tougher kids on the ranch and that means that he's not going to have a lot of good targets. Assuming that it's okay with you if you have good targets rather than easy targets, I think that she's probably about perfect for this sort of role in Nick's life. There are tons of things about her which could potentially make her a victim of his bullying and his crew, and as she gets stronger (which she will due to the nature of the ranch), she's going to be one who will stand up to him to defend both herself and others, and that could be a strong plot for them in that regard.

I'm ready to start threading either her or Rachel as soon as anybody else is ready to thread with them, so I'd be happy to figure out a thread with them!

Bella's admit hasn't even been started yet xD

I'd be happy to get something started with Rachel though. Maybe not the one that we'd previously talked about because she's currently in the library. I think Ava's wanting Tony to pick that one up just because of Rachel's attitude in the post, so I'd love to start something else.

Do you have any particular ideas for them? Rachel's a keen rider, so anything in the barn would work. Her breed of horse tends to be a bit... doofy. So he could happen upon her cussing Thor out for having done something stupid like losing his boots while he was turned out, or kicking off his shoes and needing to be re-shod.

Sweet natured and giving, Rebekah Brook is a friendly face around the ranch. She worked the program as a teenager, and met Simon Brook when she was in college. They married and returned home, only for her to discover that he was, in fact, one of Brooks who owned the ranch where she had spent her adolescence. It wasn't amusing at first, but as time went on, it became a personal inside joke, and Bekah became a friendly face around the ranch, someone who understood the kids better than most -- including her husband -- and who would bend over backward to make the newcomers as comfortable as she could.

Bekah is generally considered to be one of the most approachable adults on the ranch. She is considerate, kind, and compassionate, and she tends to see the students for the people they are beneath their troubles. Of all the adults on the ranch, she's the last one to judge one of the students based on their troubles. After all, she's had her fair share of struggles as well.

She's currently pregnant, which limits her activities quiet a bit, but Bekah still does her best to keep up with the kids on the ranch and to help them as much as she can. Adjustment is a process as far as she's concerned, and most kids settle down once they have the opportunity to know that somebody on the ranch actually cares for them.

A very hands-on adult, Bekah goes out of her way to spend time with the kids in a personal setting, and she reaches out to them individually, particularly when they're struggling. Even on her toughest days, she eats with the kids, checks in on them in their dorms, and provides room for them to communicate with her. If they can't or don't want to communicate, she's more than happy to just hold space for them.

I can't help but think that these two are going to wind up not liking one another very much. Nick is likely to see Bekah as vulnerable, at least at first. She doesn't talk a lot and in spite of being outgoing and extroverted, some people might see her as shy because she chooses to observe when she first meets somebody. I can't help but think that Nick might be one of those people who sees her as being weaker than she is and then to try to take advantage of that.

Pregnant or not, if he tries, she's the sort to twist his arm behind his back and push him against the wall to make her point. To use her words, "I regularly team up with a twelve-hundred pound animal. You are not going to be a problem." Pretty much the same thing that Logan thought about Nick at first meeting. She's stronger than she looks -- especially pregnant -- and she's not going to put up with his shit.

The way that I understand Nick, I think that this might wind up intimidating him rather than the other way around, and because of his quest for power, I could definitely see this being something that breaks their relationship. At the same time I don't think she's going to see through his act of being the "good student" (really, says Logan, he is one, in spite of everything), and she will probably continue to be as supportive as she can, regardless of what he thinks.

Thoughts?

I definitely like this idea and I think that we should make the most of it. If he dislikes her, it's quite likely that it will give me an opportunity to demonstrate that as positive and optimistic as she is, she's not going to like everybody and one thing that's going to grate on her is the fact that Nick is too stubborn to allow himself room to grow. I think it's pretty obvious that a woman isn't going to be able to get to him, but you could try Ryan Williams. He's the sort of character who might could. Or when Ava gets Jack Dorsey into play.

Grace was sent to Brook Haven Ranch by her parents, who felt that she was defiant, disobedient, and obstinate at home. More than they wanted to help her, they wanted her out of their hair. She frustrated them to no end with her vegetarian lifestyle, her refusal to participate in the slaughter of animals on their homestead, and failed to produce even the "simplest" of baked goods to sell at the market. In many ways, Grace was a liability to her parents, and so they found the most convenient way to get her out of their hair: They enrolled her at Brook Haven Ranch.

It broke Grace's heart. A good girl who has always done her best to please her parents, she's struggled throughout her entire lifetime to do what they wanted of her. On the ranch she has been obedient, considerate, polite, and compassionate with her peers. She's learned to ride quickly, is excellent with horses, and she has gone the distance to help other students to learn how to make the most of their experience on the ranch as well. Helpful and kind, she's known as someone who is a friend to everyone.

Grace is also a strange person. She belongs to a family of witches who have practiced witchcraft for many generations, and her beliefs, therefore, are different from most other students on the ranch. This makes her an easy target for bullying by some of the pushier students on the ranch, but she's always tolerated bullying with a brave face.

This is the first time that Grace has been in school, having been previously home schooled, and so she's still adjusting to the academics and the schedule for education, since she's more accustomed to working every day of the year without much of a break.

Now her home relationships are in turmoil, and it's tough for Grace since her parents and sisters live in Trader's Bend. She's not sure whether they're ever going to come to see her on the visitation days, and she's trying hard not to care.

I can't remember if we've ever done this relationship, so this is going to be fresh, as I can't remember.

To begin with, I figure that Grace is probably going to annoy Nick. She fits in with this group a lot better than she appears to on the outset, and I think that he's probably going to see somebody who is holding the group back competitively. Since the group dynamic matters to Nick, I can see this turning antagonistic really fast. Plus, he'll get a rise out of her after a while. It won't be immediate, and he'll have to keep trying, but he will get a reaction out of Grace, and when he does it's likely to be explosive.

She needs to have this moment, so it might as well be Nick to trigger that moment for her. Let me know if this is something that interests you!

I just marked the thread between Rachel and Nick as complete, because at some point they were going to have to go back to class. Is there anything you'd like to do to follow up with this? Either with these two or with other characters, maybe Nick talking some about Rachel having been in juvy? It's up to you obviously how you feel about him breaking her confidence like that, but I think some follow-up would be nice.

This is going to be a tough relationship for me. Annie is naturally aloof, which I think that Nick will appreciate, but then at the same time I think that he might try to take advantage of her aloofness to use it to his own advantage. If he does, she will turn on him so fast that he won't know what hit him. She's not the punitive type -- nor does she rely heavily on reward, either. However, if he crosses her personally, Annie is likely to make his life personally miserable with more chores than he knows what to do with. Do you have any thoughts on their relationship?

I'm definitely still down for this. There are potentially quite a few people who would get on her side this time around so I think that it would be good for him to have that to back him up. Even better if he has some real friends on his side by that point. I know some of mine would stand up for him, even if they don't agree with this viewpoints.
